By the time HGSS came out, I was reaching the end of when it was socially acceptable to like Pokemon in school. But that didn't stop me from religiously carrying around my Entei in my Pokéwalker.

I never stopped with pokemon at school. Between the ages of 13-16, my friends and I would bring our ds in just to play pokemon and other games at break time. Did we get made fun of? Yes. Did we care? Nope. Then obviously, in college and Uni pokemon was cool again because it's not full of weird assholes. Who dislike things purely because they think they should.

I have a bittersweet relationship with the Pokewalker especially as someone who became housebound and largely unable to walk in between HGSS first coming out and the current day. It was hard to not feel a twinge of bitterness as you described all of the ways that they expand the available roster for my favorite game in the series, but it does sincerely mean a lot that you brought it up at the end. Adding my perspective as a Pokémon Sleep player: I struggle a lot with sleep regulation, and tend to get incredibly lonely sleeping by myself, even with my giant Furret to hug. Pokémon Sleep not only encourages me to adopt better sleeping habits, but it gives me something to look forward to when going to bed and when waking up, as it’s genuinely exciting for me to see which Pokémon my Snorlax summoned overnight. I also really appreciate how Select Button, the game’s developers, have made an effort to give ample bonuses and rewards to f2p players like me. While the existence of Sleep itself may feel like a marketing move on TPC’s part, the game feels like its devs actually want people to enjoy the experience rather than nickel and dime them on every little thing-games like Pokémon Go and Pokémon Cafe Remix could learn from Sleep’s approach. Pokémon Sleep is definitely not for everyone and I don’t fault anyone for disliking it or being disappointed that it doesn’t suit their lifestyle, but I believe the devs did do an incredible job making it a fantastic experience overall for the niche audience of people who enjoy the game.
@Miguel_Macias13 ай бұрын
I'm totally with you! I've also really been enjoying Pokemon sleep since release! You can just *feel* the devs actually put a lot of care and love into it and I LOVE that! The Pokéwalker is definitely my personal favourite of these peripherals, and I've had one on my person every day since I first got the game on release (though I've had to cycle through a few due to damage or loss). As a kid, it was extremely satisfying to spend time playing HeartGold and SoulSilver with my team following behind me, and then being able to carry that over to my daily life at school, as well as connect with other kids who had their Pokéwalkers, including kids who I had previously been intimidated by as being "the cool kids" and being afraid to talk about my interests with them. As a teen, it was comforting to have my Pokémon with me as i navigated the perilous halls of high school, because while I had a lot of friends, I had to change a lot of myself in order to fit in, so the Pokéwalker was a little reminder to myself of who I really was. Now, as an adult, I don't have much time to enjoy my favourite hobbies, but remembering that I've got a little buddy on my hip during a particularly grueling work-day is always very comforting. I've also suffered from a lot of health issues across my life that have prevented me from partaking in a lot of normal fitness and exercise, but the Pokéwalker, and later Pokémon GO and its peripherals, really encouraged me to at least take up a lot of walking, which has definitely kept me in better health than if I did absolutely nothing. I'm really looking forward to the continued development of these kinds of peripherals, especially with Gen II presumably being the next generation to receive its second remake, though I fear it'll be less of a "Pokéwalker 2" and more of a "Poké Ball Plus +"

I believe I used it to get a murkrow to use throughout johto as my fly Pokémon which was wonderful because you couldn’t get him until Kanto or the safari zone. The Pokéwalker was known for being one of the most accurate pedometers of its time! Too bad its functionality was limited only to the games it was designed for. I loved the Pokéwalker a lot as a youngster, especially since it looked like a Tamagotchi, which was my gateway into video games. The one thing I didn't like about it was that Pokémon only levelled up once, despite 1 exp point being granted per step, as if it wasn't tedious enough to level up Pokémon in HGSS! Was glad they improved on that with the Poké Ball Plus, though exp was much more generous in Let's Go anyway.

I vaguely remember trying to use the Pokewalker during my run in SS. Kinda neat, but remembering to interact with it was beyond child me's attention span for the most part, not to mention how surprisingly cumbersome it was for such a small device if I didn't want to accidentally break it or mash buttons. Alas, I lost an Articuno to a dead battery after a considerably long dry spell in my Pokemon journey. (I'm not too chuffed about it. I got more legendary birds than I know what to do with at this point.) Hearing about the documented and preserved interactivities has got me considering breaking it out and trying for some of the unique rewards. Thanks, Tama!

I think Pokemon Sleep is fun,,, mainly as an additional source of information on Pokemon and for the art style, and it does help me sleep after a while, but the like 30 minutes of setup each night with the berry/ingredient collection, making Snorlax dinner, setting up a proper team and deciding on an incense can be too much for me bother with sometimes. I also find that, with my very inconsistent sleep schedule, the sleep tracking's way of cutting off each session and occasionally not working due to loud noises or the lack of noise at all can negatively impact my willingness to continue into checking the daily Pokemon encountered. Also, something not mentioned in this video and that Pokemon themselves has also forgotten about is Pokemon Smile! I love this app so much and it's a shame it was only updated once, to include Johto Pokemon. As someone with both depression and adhd, remembering to do really any routine and actually execute on that plan can be extremely hard, especially when a part of it feels repetitive or like a waste of time, like staring at myself in the mirror while I slowly move a toothbrush around my mouth, but the cute rendering style and tie-in to shadow pokemon kept me using the app for quite a while... or at least until I caught almost everything. Sure, 256 Pokemon is a lot of creatures, but when you're encouraged to brush at least twice a day, that's at most 126 days this app will be engaging you with new Pokemon to catch. Sure, it also has the unlockable hats, but the actual unlock methods are extremely unclear and aren't noted anywhere I can find. Something else I find peculiar about this app is that it seemingly rewards players for *not* using it. I could not find Celebi for the life of me the last time I was seriously engaged in the app, and all of a sudden when I download it again for the first time in maybe a year, Celebi is the first Pokemon I encounter, and I recall something similar happening with Mew, where I missed a week and came back to this rare Pokemon. I understand wanted to reel back in players that may be slipping, but having mythical Pokemon seemingly tied to not using the app is incredibly counter-intuitive. ,,,Also I want to see more than Ludicolo in this art style its really cute One last critique of Pokemon apps in general is that they often require additional storage to operate at all, along with (mainly in the case of GO) constantly having smaller updates that slowly take over phone storage. For someone with more than 10 gigs on their phone, this might not be an issue, but as someone with an older model that has most of its memory taken up with update data, I don't have very much left over most the time, and locking these apps behind this pseudo-paywall makes it actively less accessible. Ranting aside, I loved the video! This is the first I'm seeing of your channel and I love the friendly essayist style of content this video brings

To be honest I feel like none of these devices really do this concept justice. I love the idea of the Pokewalker, being able to transfer my Pokemon from the games into the "real world" to go on walks with and stuff, but at the end of the day there's really nothing you can do with them there. It doesn't feel very interactive, I feel like there are a lot of ways they could make it feel like you're actually walking with your buddy. Stuff like the Pokeball+'s sound effects definitely help, as does the virtual pet aspects of the earlier Pokemon Pikachu's, but even then I feel more could be done. Maybe we'll get one someday soon that combines a lot of these features.

to anyone trying to burn cals/lose weight but find it too boring : 1 hey you're just like me :') 2 the ''fix'' i found is simply to walk on a treadmill while playing on my switch, since the joycons are separated, you can walk as normal unlike holding a regular controller i often just zone out while playing and endup burning more cals than i was going for (paper mario was a godsend) of course the best is having a home setup where you switch is docked on your tv but you can still use this even in public gyms, you'll just have to play undocked (and no, before you say that people would judge you for doing that in gyms, as a gymrat who did this often, trust me most people go ''omg that's such a good idea'', most people are zoned out listening to music or a podcast, playing a video game isn't much different)

I remember at the time there was some research done that determined that the Pokewalker was the most accurate pedometer in the market, even more than the actual fitness pedometers at the time. I still have my copy of SoulSilver and the pokewalker it came with from when the game came out. The only thing I didn't like about it was the fact that the pokemon only gained one level at a time, because I wish I could have used it to level up my back up pokemon while I was working at the time. Other than that, perfect device. It's a shame we don't get this kind of stuff anymore, I loved when we had accessories and stuff to accompany creative games like that; Bandai used to do a lot of this stuff, especially with the WonderSwan and Digimon.

Wow that intro 😳 I remember I used to carry my Pokewalker to work all the time! I didn't have to walk much but I was standing up all day so I got some decent steps in! Even with the 3DS games like X&Y I would go out of my way to walk so i could use the egg powers and the other stuff 😆 I've been using pokemon sleep since it released and I actually really like it! I think you're a bit wrong on your judgement, it's not meant as a game at all, its purpose is to help you follow healthy sleeping habits and it gives you incentives and rewards if you do. You dont have to open it all the time or really interact with it, I usually only open it to feed my snorlax and collect my berries and ingredients. Also this "game" is actually surprisingly *VERY* deep, like it reminds me of getting and preparing competitive pokemon in the mainline games lol its very fun! It also has great support from the devs, constantly making changes based on player feedback, it just got a whole new island this week! I think you should give it a try 😊 I've been watching your videos for over 10 years now, I'm glad you're still going strong! Keep up the good work Tama, you're doing great!

Great video. The Pokémon go plus did initially work when your phone was locked or in a different app, and stayed connected even after closing the app. At some point they updated the game to remove this functionally, or didn’t care enough to repair these issues. Iirc it coincided with the release of let’s go, which I attribute to trying to push sales of the pokeball plus

@marxistharpy Omg really?? When she said that the game needed to be open for the go plus to work I was confused cause I was able to have my phone screen off when using it.. But I haven't used it ever since I got the Pokeball plus so I didn't know :O Omg that sucks!! Wtf

@@KiroBreni yeah, it’s unfortunate. The Pokémon go plus is now just a cute bracelet I keep in a box with some watches lol. I still play PoGo but don’t want to buy another accessory to do what I was already doing in the first place with the Go Plus.

Now I want to replay SoulSilver and get a new Pokéwalker. Also, I remember the discourse about how Let's Go "put Mew behind a paywall." Those were simpler times.

Great video! I actually wear both my Pokewalker and a Wii Fit U Pedometer daily, and I can attest to the both of them being super rewarding and accurate. Neat thing about the Wii Fit U meter, it has a feature that measures "Stairs climbed" by checking altitude changes using a barometer to measure air pressure! This works pretty well most of the time, but if it happens to get rainy while on a walk, the meter will log you as getting some height XD. I also picked up a Pokeball plus from one of my retro game store coworkers second hand last year, and I've definitely gotten my money's worth from it, even without the one-time Mew. It makes for a fun alt controller for the rare occasion I'm in the mood to play either of the Let's Go games (haven't played them in months, currently no plans to XD) and it's pretty convenient for Go play as well! I think you hit the nail on the head for why a lot of the core fanbase don't enjoy these games as much as we might expect to be able to, and it's a feeling I'm all to familiar with. The logic that these parts of the franchise are just ones that aren't made for us has me feeling a whole lot better about my gen 3 main line and spinoff obsessed self. That said, LOVED the deeper look at the various pedometers and espesh the format of gameplay footage placed over pictures of DS screens, very cute! And once again, you're living my dream! Walking around with every Pokemon pedometer all at once, I wish! I'm just not confident enough to wear them outside of my pockets without a shirt covering them XD. Both of my jobs have me doing a decent amount of walking, so at least I can get some good use out of them in my pockets or a bag. Loved this video, can't wait for the next one!

if you still have the game nintendo expected thar to happen and installed a failsafe. pulled from bulbapedia: "A Pokémon can be restored to the game it was taken from if a Pokéwalker is lost or broken by pressing and holding Up, Select, and R at the Pokéwalker connection screen. The Pokémon will be returned to the PC box with its level and friendship unaffected."

I have a large soft spot for the pokeball plus. I was getting blood infusions weekly several years ago and the pokeball plus let me play lets go with one hand. Which was great because one arm was always covered in tubes and wires and i couldnt bend it much during the infusions. Its one of the reasons lets go are some of my favorite games. They were very accessible in a time where i was very sick. And just like you said, having your pokemon cry out to you from the pokeball really is a magical experience!

I recently dug out and cleaned up my old pokewalker. I really enjoyed starting my HG game over from scratch and learning about and using the WiFi work arounds to get all the old event paths I lost. It’s one of my favorite Pokémon accessories I own.

21:06 Adventure sync used to work with Apple Watch but there were too many bugs that it’s discontinued now I think.

Adventure Sync does work with walking/movement data from the Apple Watch which is synced with the Health app, but the old Apple Watch app that they had (which showed eggs and let you see their distance walked) is not around anymore.

great video Tama, I know over the last year or two youve been open with your writers block and issues with getting videos made but videos like this (and honestly, all your videos in my humble opinion) are why I've been subscribed to you for almost a decade. Love your content, keep it up! PS, Id personally love to see more videos like your games for girls series. As a guy, I love those videos because for me it was a wonderful lens into the kinds of games you and other girls were wrongly subjected to just for being girls. And I find your takes on the matter so entertaining! K bye! 😅

32:53 as an agoraphobic person who is mostly housebound, it was interesting to hear you make mention of us! Pokemon Go has always been so cool to me, i even have it downloaded. but it's the most restrictive game i've ever played since i rarely ever get to spin stops and practically never get to do gym fights. the rocket balloons are super cool but all my pokemon are too weak for them 💀
