If anyone doesn't feel like the period pants (because I think they feel kinda weird), reusable cotton pads exist too! You can get them in multiple sizes and for different flows as well! You can also buy a wash bag to use in the washing machine which will reduce the amount of microplastics released (as any material with a synthetic element has this issue. clothes as well). I would recommend a company called Precious Stars Pads but there are plenty of other ethical companies out there that stock them. I'm surprised they weren't mentioned in this video since they're really popular and one of the most environmentally friendly period products but I get that adding extra products to the list would take another month. Edit: I think it's also worth mentioning that making the switch to reusable products isn't just for the environment it's also for your health. Disposable pads and tampons are speculated to be really bad for your health due to the chemicals they use to bleach them white. Cloth pads are also way more comfy and will save you so much money long term.

I swear by my reusable pads! I use them with period underwear (sorry, Canadian - pants to me are what the Brits refer to as trousers) and then when I have to take them out I’ve got my backup for the rest of the day! Love them!

Oooh yeah I have one of these too! I do feel like mine (it's a UK brand, not sure what, has a fleecy type inner) moves around too much, not sure if that's just because of the underwear/size. But I thought it was a good solution.

I've used my mooncup for about two years now (wow okay didn't think it would be this long) and I love it. I think handling a menstrual cup kind of " forces" you to get to know your vaginal area and I know it sounds dump but during my periods in the last years I really got a deeper understanding for how my vagina is built and is working. Using a cup also can feel a lot cleaner than pads or tampons because even though you have to empty it every now and then you don't have this disgusting blood-soaked piece of cottonplastic combination. But I have to admit that it took a long time for me to use it correctly and I leaked sometimes. I just wanted for it to work so bad that I just used some thinner pads until I worked out how to create the pressure that prevents leakage. Just try to overcome your fear it's a strange and kind of fun experience. :) (Yeeah english isn't my first language)

Have you read that recently it has been found that menstrual cups can cause prolapse of the uterus, as well as UTIs? It is worth looking at the side effects as research into effects of cups is only just starting!

@@mba09nr No, I actually have never heard about it. Going to look it up, thanks for mentioning it. Another reminder of how unfair it is that so few money is invested in research for women.

I started using a cup when I was 12, I’m now 15 and I still love it. It’s a little scary at first but once you get used to putting it in and wearing it it’s so worth it. On my regular days I can wear it up to 8-10 hours which is really convenient when I have to go to school or have a busy day. Also it rarely leaks. The only cons are they’re a pain to change in public, and if you put it in wrong it hurts.

I have been using Modibodi period pants for just over a year. I was so dubious and essentially bought a pair as an experiment I expected to fail. But honestly, GAME CHANGER. I have enough pairs to cover my entire period and I LOVE THEM. I even have some ~sexier~ pairs that have lace or mesh bits so I don't feel completely Bridget Jones. So comfy, just put them on and I am ready to go, no problemo, can mostly forget about it (other than them good old cramps). I always hated the faff of changing products, particularly in public toilets, and ya know, I am a lazy soul, and these are so simple, no loud wrappers or messing around with packets or applicators in tiny cubicles whilst there is a massive queue. Just pull up your pants and be on your merry way. A lazy person's DREAM. Around £25 a pair, but I literally don't need to use anything else, so worth it, and I have a plastic free period which I love. Easy to wash - just bung them all in a colder wash, and don't put them in the tumble-dryer! No issues with odour or discomfort, which was my main fear, just so easy and comfy. Life changing tbh.

I'm being very pedantic here but you said something like 'we have to pay for periods which isn't something men do' and I know most of the time women have periods but it's important to think about people who aren't the majority. It could be helpful to say 'people who don't menstruate' as this is more inclusive. Great video! :) 💕

Okay, so I know reusable pads weren't really covered in this video, so I want to share my experience with them (been using them for almost a year now); - It can be a bit weird to wear at first, for me it kinda felt like I was wearing some form of "diaper" because it was cloth. However, it's something you can get used to, I find them to be much more comfy than disposable pads. - It can shift around quite a bit, just like a normal pad, but you just need to figure out how to adjust it properly when you first put it on. The ones I purchased have one set of snaps on them so I used to have issues with them shifting throughout the day as I walked, exercised, etc. but again, over time you find better ways to adjust and position them to what's comfortable for you. - I've noticed they're also very comfortable to sleep in, and I get minimal leakage onto clothes/sheets. - There's also not really a "pad smell" if that makes any sense. Like when you've worn a pad for x amount of time and it gets a chemically smell? Yeah there's none of that. - At maximum I've worn reusable pads for eight hours (while sleeping), I wouldn't risk exceeding that because of bacteria, much like with disposables. Depending on flow, I would say you can wear them for three (heaviest) to six (lightest) hours with no issues. - In my experience with the ones I've purchased, they can be either machine or hand washed. With using a washer, make sure the detergents you're using are unscented or "free & clear" as you don't wanna risk any residual funk on your pads. I've thrown mine in the dryer on low heat and they've been fine, but air drying also works. Here's the kind that I purchased: www.amazon.com/Simfamily-Including-Charcoal-Menstrual-Reusable/dp/B071ZFH5WF/ref=sxts_sxwds-bia-wc1_0?cv_ct_cx=reusable+pads&keywords=reusable+pads&pd_rd_i=B071ZFH5WF&pd_rd_r=c442a801-244e-4fb9-a5ee-e03f2965bf59&pd_rd_w=JCipH&pd_rd_wg=Wc29w&pf_rd_p=c8430d96-912c-40d1-9740-e1beca245dd5&pf_rd_r=JFP34HYSJTT4NFBJR902&psc=1&qid=1584044624 They're bamboo material, but honestly cotton would probably be better for your health down there. I haven't noticed any issues personally, but in terms of "breathability" it might be better to go with cotton pads. I didn't because they were more expensive and also white. Hope this helps!

Fun fact: in Germany we don't use applicators with our tampons at all and when I first moved to the UK in 2011 I didn't know how to handle them and would literally remove the tampon from the applicator so I could insert it the way I was used to. I dunno if this works for everyone and with different flows etc but when I was struggling finding the right pad sizes for me (when I was starting my period) and I'd have problems with leakages and potential leakages I swore by wearing cycling shorts under whatever I was wearing as a protection or at least minimising the leaks getting to the clothes on show (really helped at night when I used to get the worst leaking) I dunno whether they are more absorbent or just another layer but they really helped me feel more confident there wouldn't be any problems or at least any severe problems. (The leak more often than not was just on the underwear and cycling shorts but not on outer clothes or bedding at all or much). So I would recommend for trying out new products where there's more risks of leaking - especially when learning how to use them. Hope it helps :) But feeling super relieved for this is a video and the comments helping people make more informed choices on what works for them and not having the judgemental comments. It has really been good for me finding solid options to try. Feeling inspired to step out of what I know and try for something better (something I've been wanting to do for literally years!) :)

I started using a menstrual cup (organicup) last year, and it has really changed my period for me. I feel much more secure than with tampons, it's so much easier, no fear of it getting lost etc etc etc. And of course it's a lot cheaper and better for the environment. Apparently it's also a lot safer and more hygienic, and your vagina doesn't dry out like it does from tampons which would always create a lot of discomfort for me. Would 100% recommend this cup to everyone, I recently convinced my sister to start using one as well! And don't be afraid to cut the end, mine started to really hurt me after a few hours the first time and that put me off of the cup for a couple of days, but then I read you could cut it and that made all the difference.

I've found that a cheaper alternative to period pants is a reusable pads. They are just fabric with a popper that you wrap around your pants. So easy, still as absorbent and about £10-£15 for a pack of 3 off eBay.

Thanks for the interesting video and sharing your experienced! So here's my journey to the menstrual cup: When I first heard about the cup, I kind of liked the idea of it, however I found it absolutely horrifying running around all day with that huge plastic thing inside of me. Then finally I came around and bought the Merula cup, which is supposed to fit every body shape. After having it waiting in my bathroom drawer and watching me for a few months, I finally gave in and tried it. Didn't fit! I could still feel it against my bladder (??) so I gave up. Aftet another couple of months I bought another brand (T.O.C.) and HEUREKA it actually fit! I couldn't feel it at all! 100% recommend! I still put it in and get it out squatting in the bath tub, but will try it on the toilet next month 🤞🏻

I bought a menstrual cup when I was in college (age 17ish) as I loved the idea of it - from my research there was not really a downside - but when I used it, it caused me to have a slight prolapse when I removed it which was very very scary at the time! My doctor told me that she had come across this with other patients (so I’m not a one off, even though I’ve NEVER heard anyone talk about this online) there was no permanent damage, she just advised me not to not use it for a few months. :) I felt I should just put that out there, but I don’t want to discourage anyone because it seems to work so so well for loads of people. It’s been a couple of years now and I want to try and start using mine again:)

I love using pads but now that I use cloth pads I can’t go back to the one use only ones. The disposable pads are so much more uncomfy and sticky and plastic feeling. Cloth pads are 10000 times more comfortable. Because I’ve used pads for 8 years now I feel weird being on my period without a pad on so even if I’m using my menstrual cup I will put in a cloth pad as well. I love having a sustainable period and only use disposable pads if I’m away from home on a camp or trip with friends/people I don’t know well/guys.

yay! love my menstrual cup. I change mine in the shower so you don't have to worry at all about making a mess or feeling gross! also a tip: do not store it in a ziploc bag or anything air tight. That's a breeding ground for bacteria- they normally come with a cute little cloth pouch to go in since that will give it air but keep it clean. Since my flow isn't super strong, I will change mine every day when I shower (which is longer than 8-10 hours but I've been fine). You can also use them if you have lots of discharge (normally, not like something that has suddenly changed for your body- go to the doc if that happens).

I have the contraceptive bar in and haven't had a period since June (before that I had the coil, which also stopped me having periods) but I want to use my menstrual cup so bad! I feel like it's part of my sustainability journey being missed! Also, if you have the coil in, please PLEASE be careful while taking out your cup (probably the same deal with tampons but I never used them). One of the few times my spotting was bad and I used my cup, I accidentally pulled my coil threads. Essentially pulling my coil out. In my bathroom. Before my friend's art exhibition. Then went to work the next day. With my coil hanging halfway onto my cervix. It was no fun, so please be careful! Other than that, I love using it for periods or spotting. I also have a video about my first experience using it (pre coil incident) in case anyone else wants to hear more experiences! 💘

I've done some research on sea sponges and they're not very safe at all, and it's so hard to clean them properly. There's a higher risk of toxic shock syndrome because pieces can break off or there could be dirt or grit hidden in them. Please be careful and find out more (evidence based and not just marketing) information about them before getting them!

I love my Diva Cup, find it everywhere I'm Canada. It's silicone, and pretty flexible, good for between 5-10 years. Also, wow on the flow. I fill mine in less than 8 hours, but that's typical for my family. I still bleed well under 125ml per period (the upper level of average). Most of how much I bleed is on the first day and a half to two days, then just enough to require wearing something. I tried reusable pads and enjoyed them, except they moved a little, especially when wearing a dress or skirt. I also use Thinx, they're great. I have three for the heavy days, two for lighter days, and a spare.

Tbh my life kind of "changed" due to menstrual cups :D it seems exaggerated but I really don't like tampons, they made me feel unhygienic and dirty and I was afraid of leakage/not being able to change them often enough.. Yuck. Now the cup makes me feel sooo much cleaner which sounds insane because to use it I'm literally shoving my hands in my body haha but it just doesn't feel as weird as having this cotton blood blob stuck down there. I feel so clean! So if someone is thinking of trying the cups, I'd say yes! Go for it, just try it :) Lucy, by the way, it seems sth is wrong with your sound in this video? It sounds like sth is making the mic vibrate sometimes or is shaking it? I don't know, there's weird feedback, just for your information! :)

I used to use a mooncup for a good few years and loved it, but then I got the coil and can't use it anymore - that's a really important thing to note for anyone with the coil, the suction from a menstrual cup can nudge the coil around and could even dislodge it. I kept getting awful cramps using the two together and went to the sexual health nurse and she said it's best not to use the two together. As a result, I've been using non applicator tampons, which kind of sucks because I was loving having a no-waste period and not having to buy more sanitary products. I also tried cloth pads but they felt too weird, especially the heavier flow ones, and I found they irritated me and chafed quite a bit, especially as a thick thighed lady. Obviously that might not be the case for everyone, and for the people who it works for, that's great :) I've considered using thinx or a similar brand, but that's a big investment to have enough for a whole period (mine tends to last at least a week or more - thanks copper coil!)

I love my Saalt cup so much! And they sell a silicon friendly cleanser that is so nice (also great for cleaning sex toys) But I do find that I get a tiny bit of leaking on my heavier days (I blame this mainly on some sort of quirk with my anatomy. I could never use tampons cause they just ALWAYS leaked, even on light days) Anyways, I like to pair my cup with the period underwear for the first day or two, and after that I usually don't have any leaks.

The lily cup really takes a knack to insert because it’s so soft and I found it difficult getting it to unfold and seal because the silicone doesn’t bounce back quite as well as a regular shaped and more firm cup. Would appreciate an update if you find any tips as I’ve had to go back to my regular one :)

I have been using a menstrual cup for about 9 months and it’s been amazing for me! It took a while to figure out but now it’s so easy to insert. Obviously not everyone can use them, my friend for example can’t even use tampons because it’s too uncomfortable so cups are a no go. Since you can have them in for up to 12 hours I’m normally home in time to change them if I’m out. Also weirdly I’ve had less painful cramps which could be a coincidence. aannnd the other day i used a tampon since my flow was very light and i couldn’t be bothered to put in the cup, and I weirdly got a lot of irritation and just not nice feeling so I think since I’ve been using a completely silicon period product my body now doesn’t like the chemicals in tampons??

That's a great way in a good sustainable direction! More products that it's worth looking into: - reusable cotton pats - sponges - discs - there are even things like reusable cotton tampons that you can find online! In general I'm a big fan of the menstrual cup myself! (but are on a break from it because of my new IUD until everything is healed. If you have one talk with your gynecologist about the suction) BUT it's good to know that women* lose about 20-80ml/ one period and that's a huge gap! Me for example sometimes overflow when using the cup, but it's only blood and when you get to know your body and empty it regularly you can get around it. I just wanted to say that it's also normal and not a big deal to worry about because every woman* is different. (But of course it's always a good idea to talk about all the details with your gynecologist) Happy bleeding 🌸😎

PS. If it's "not your -menstrual- CUP of tea" try another brand! Some do slightly different shapes/ are shorter or taller. It's also good to know that the uterus is 'changing position' = can sit higher or lower depending on the day of your cycle, which might lead to the cup not really working out for you a day but sealing perfect another. So some women* also have two different cups, eg one shorter one with higher walls, depending on the uterus position. For me personally, I use just one, and on some days I can feel the cup sit higher or lower when putting in, but it doesn't make a difference in general :)

I never got to grips with menstrual cups (hoping to revisit them one day) but I quite like period panties, they are more comfy than a yucky, sweaty pad. But I do find the washing quite a chore, I feel like I’m saving plastic but using a lot more water 🤷🏼‍♀️ also they are nice for a simple day at home but I don’t wear them if I’m out for the day (who wants to carry wet and bloody undies around all day lol).

I feel like the part about menstrual cups was a little bit misleading. I use a Lena cup and I have since 2016 and I was really excited about cups that could hold my flow for 12 hours. When my cups would overflow, I seriously thought that I was abnormal, but I wasn't-- I just found out through using menstrual cups that I have a heavy flow. So I switched up to the "after childbirth" size of cup (even though I haven't had a child) and accepted that I would just have to change my cup more frequently than reviewers on the internet were saying. My periods are actually less heavy after getting a copper IUD, so what my cup changing routine looks like is on my heavy days: empty cup every 4-6 hours (or else leakage) which usually works out to waking up (6 am), right before i leave for work so that i'll be less likely to need to empty in a public stall (9 am), (3 pm), and showering/bedtime. I use menstrual pads as my backup and definitely need to because my cup will leak when it gets too full and I don't want any accidents. As someone who did pads, and then tampons, and then cup + pads, I'm very happy with my cup experience because I don't have to change my cup as often as I felt I needed to change my pads/tampons and you don't get that gross gooey feeling that you get from sitting in a wet pad all day. Once I can invest in period panties, I plan to do the cup + pads route. Basically, if you find you have a heavy flow and you don't have medical conditions that would make that a concern, you are not abnormal! AND, you can still use a menstrual cup.

I’ve recently invested in a menstrual disc (if that’s the proper name) as to a menstrual cup and if you have £30-40 initially it’s really worth it. Doesn’t use suction so can be used with an iud fitted and means you don’t need to break a seal so really easy removal and insertion. I have the nixit which is a woman owned brand, comes with a cotton bag to store it in and the actual cup is super flexible and soft, had no struggle inserting it properly even first time using and as long as you know how to engage your pelvic floor muscles not much reaching around with your hand in the toilet to get it out 😂 You cannot feel it when inserted and because it sits in a different place to a usual menstrual cup (it tucks behind your pubic bone) it doesn’t get in the way of penetration if you want some mess free sex/masturbation. Can stay in for up to 12 hours, I definitely recommend especially if you’re like me and a lil daunted by the suction and seal breaking involved with a traditional menstrual cup. (Pretty sure all the packaging was cardboard and plastic free as well!!!)

Kind's non-applicator tampons now come wrapped in paper! It does mean the tip is a bit more fluffy than if they're plastic wrapped but still easy to use and can be much more easily recycled/composted. Wouldn't recommend the DAME reusable applicator, it doesn't properly eject the tampon so half the time you end up pulling it back out by mistake and have to put it back in non-applicator style anyway.

With careful planning and washing the underwear every day during my period, the five pairs work.

I think you need to sterilise your cup with a rolling boil, like in a pan on the hob, and keep the water boiling for 10 minutes. I don’t think just pouring boiling water on it will do the job. Also you can turn your cup inside out if the stem is poking you even after trimming it down

I’ve started using a moon cup for the last 2 month because 1. I was getting thrush a lot and heard that tampons really don’t help 2. Much better for the environment and I’m happy with it. I wear it throughout my whole cycle and no problems. I even wore it swimming the other day, the only thing I would say about that is you will need to empty it after your swim because it can fill up with water. The 1 thing I don’t like about the moon cup is how big the rim is at the top, I find it quite painful to remove it sometime so I’m on the look out for a cup with a smaller rim if anyone has any suggestions? 😊

toxic shock can also happen with a menstrual cup when you leave it for more than 6 hours... I know they say that you can leave them in overnight or up to 12 hours but that's actually as dangerous as a tampon because the toxic shock occurs when a bacteria in your vagina reacts with the coagulation of your blood. the more your blood stays in your vagina the more time the bacteria has to spread into the rest of your body. 6 hours should be the maximum, for both the cup and the tampon

Maria Copley I would go to the doctor if you’re really heavy (which sounds like you are if you are filling up your cup). It could be a sign of endometriosis or another condition. Irregular periods aren’t uncommon especially when you’re younger, but combined with heavy periods could be indicative of something else. I used to have really heavy periods and they just got heavier over time, which meant the pain also increased until unbearable! When talking to friends I realised my periods weren’t “normal” so went to the doctor: they were able to prescribe medication which reduces the flow. I get minimal pain now and periods are much less heavy. The medication I was prescribed is non-hormone affecting too (unlike the pill), and from my understanding there are various options out there even if you don’t have an underlying health condition. Hope that helps! :) x

Trigger warning: mentions of IBS struggles I struggled so much with the menstrual cup when I tried using it because of my IBS. I used it for 6 months and tried all different ways of putting it in. I have always had issues with constipation and diarrhea, and it gets so much worse on my period, so whenever I would go to the bathroom it would push out the cup a little. It was so annoying because I had to fix the cup every time I went to the bathroom. So if anybody struggles with IBS, the menstrual cup may not be for you. I plan on trying period panties (just bought a bunch of Thinx panties), and I’m really hopeful about them.
