lindsey be careful with melatonin! I use it occasionally but the problem for some people is that you get so groggy the next day that it’s like you stayed up late anyway. I also can’t sleep through the night if I use melatonin and I have awful dreams. I know some people experience this and I hope it’s not that way for you, but I’d be careful and not have big plans the next day if you try it.
@prettyprincesschoso5 жыл бұрын
lindsey if you end up trying melatonin, start out with quite a low dose, i’d recommend honestly like 1mg and then if that doesn’t work for you, increase the dosage by .5mg at the most. just know, you can become dependent on it, I haven’t, personally, I just have Insomnia lol. it can also cause a lot of insanely like idk Intense dreams, it doesn’t happen all the time but it can lol I recommend giving melatonin a try tho!! it’s a really good sleep supplement, nice that it’s all natural!! sorry for the book lol, I hope this helps!

I’ve had sleep issues since elementary school. I started taking as little melatonin as possible once my dr recommended it in 8th grade. It no longer works for me, so here are some recommendations to make sure you don’t get used to it. 1. Take as little as possible. If u have the 5mg, cut them in half. Try those and only go up if they don’t work at all 2. Stay away from blue light (like all those lights in your room and your phone and computer) because it blocks your natural melatonin production. 3. If you don’t need to take it, don’t. The last thing you want to do is develop an immunity. 4. Eat something first thing in the morning. It kickstarts your digestive tract which is another signal (in addition to pure sunlight) to your brain that your day has started. Along those lines, refrain from having a midnight snack because forcing your body to continue digesting things while you try to go to bed signals that you need to stay up longer. You can google more about circadian rhythms and eating patterns to learn more. 5. The zzzquill and such is NOT the same thing as melatonin and do NOT treat it as such. You won’t feel the same after taking it 6. Take the melatonin at least half an hour before you plan on going to sleep (which you do, yay) 7. If you start waking up in the middle of the night (4-5 hrs after falling asleep) and there is nothing emotionally taxing going on then you need a slightly stronger dose People feel free to reply to this comment with more info about melatonin. It’s really a fantastic supplement to sleep, but be careful not to take so much that your body starts to produce less naturally. It’s a tough balance but vital!!!

@kayleayeakley65695 жыл бұрын
Yes I was hoping someone would say this! Supplemental melatonin can often become a crutch for those dying for sleep and they start taking multiple doses in hopes for sleep- this is so confusing for your brain and your natural melatonin can become diminished, keeping you wide awake at night. It affects your circadian rhythm to be without normal levels of melatonin which can also frazzle the brain. I’ve had a few friends “detox” from it, and they had to endure a few weeks of bad sleep before their body started producing normal amounts again. It is so helpful for getting people back on track though, as mikaela uses it here, but I wouldn’t recommend relying on it every night. Good luck to everyone’s sleep journeys!

So often, people glorify getting no sleep and treat it as somewhere between a meme and something to aspire to, that it's something funny and #relatable, so I'm glad you talked about the effects on your own life. Getting too little sleep is one of the leading contributors to people dying young, and while modern world tries to make it as fucking hard as possible to sleep enough, making the decision to break the habit is admirable.

It's really good to get into your school sleep schedule about a week or 2 before school starts :) I personally have weird bursts of insomnia (idk what to call it) and will stay up for DAYS and it really hurts me physically, emotionally etc. I pretty much forced my friend and boyfriend to hang out with me til my bed time, whenever I started dozing off during the day they'd keep me awake etc and finally let me sleep at night and I'd drink some warm tea with honey. It helped a ton. I now use a medication when I need it though because of having so much trouble sleeping.
@keirafay49695 жыл бұрын
:/ same. I go to sleep at 4 or 5 and wake up at 1. Not quite as bad, but still not healthy for a teenager who has to wake up at 5 instead of going to sleep then.

It's so wholesome seeing Mikaela advance as a person, especially when she talks about how much she cares for other people enough to change, and even in the smaller things like taking care of Teddy before he died. It's so lovely to see when there are so many people on KZbin that are the absolute opposite and it restores faith in future of KZbinrs and humanity watching her

For most melatonin, you're only supposed to take them every night or so for 6 months. Without any medical sleeping conditions it is unhealthy to take it for more then a year, or at least that's how they work in my state.

Her being so honest about her struggles humanizes her, makes her more relatable, and also helps me to be easier on myself and remember that my issues aren’t so crazy. Everyone experiences tough times and mental health struggles too. Love you Mikaela!

it can also be kinda addicting (my experience). i took melatonin for a month but i stopped thaking it because i would be sleepy and weak at school. after stopping i could not fall asleep anymore at a normal sleeping hour. before starting to take it i would fall asleep at 1-2 am, while i was taking it i fell asleep at 12 am and after stopping i literally fell asleep at 5 am and woke up at 6 to go to school... it has the pro of making you fall asleep faster but it can come with a cost.

Yep! Blue light is the most similar to natural daylight which is cool toned so it tricks your body into thinking it's daytime. Also, this counts for electronics too. If you're using a computer or phone in the evenings, you should use an orange toned filter. They have tons of blue light filter apps. I like Twilight on Android.
