Being a culinary student, I have to say that softened butter and eggs can play into how the cake comes out; gluten that is created in the batter can be shocked at colder temperatures, making the cake more dense and less fluffy. This is why eggs need to be at room temperature. On the flip side, if you use cold butter it makes the mixing process more difficult and you risk the possibility of not amalgamating the ingredients together (this is called creaming; often used with butter, vanilla, and sugar) Just to let all you bakers know!
