Well done on the panel install, you will be delighted with the power you will get to charge your leisure battery. I have stuck on flexi solar panel with Sikaflex and they have not moved👍👍 so don’t worry about it coming off. The less holes you drill through the roof the better.👍 Cheers Mike🍷Looking forward to the next video😀

Hi Ruth. I see that you are finally trying an off-grid system! I am a little disappointed that you were not able to use all of the roof space, although it would have been a good compromise with the amount of power generated. Hopefully you will be able to get the amount of power you need.🤩

Interesting video Ruth but I think you should fuse the solar line and put it through a charge controller. I have the same solar array on my boat and it gives out about 22 v up to 6 a which the controller steps down to 14.4 v. I bought a cheap PWM controller from ebay for £7.
@ruthaisling Жыл бұрын
I believe there is a charge controller inside the Bluetti portable battery I'm using?
I would strongly recommed an MPPT controller and in line fuses to get the best from your solar and to avoid damaging your battery or starting a fire. They are really easy to fit and my only problem was the lack of space in my battery compartment. Our 120W panel kept us going for 6 days on the Isle of Lewis in May a few years ago with no other charging as the engine charging hadn't been connected at the time. To be fair we only used it to have a few LED lights on, power the water pump and very occasionally run an Android tablet and the sun came up at about 3am and set at about 11pm.
@ruthaisling Жыл бұрын
That sounds like a great experience with your solar panel. Thanks for the advice about the MPPT!

I don't think there will be much need for air conditioning in Scotland, a diesel heater would be more useful. The air conditoning install in the bus was totally worth it in Japan though!
I have 2 x 100 watt solar panel on the roof plus 2 x AGM batteries = 240 A. And a battery monitor that shows how much power is left. I was not even at 95 %. They are always full

I'm curious..... why do you need solar in a van? I've lived in vans or cars with a quick pitch tent on & off for twenty years & never needed it. I find an average size battery (normally a second hand one) & plugged into my ignition fed cigarette lighter socket works fine. I must admit i don't bother with a fridge anymore as they were more trouble than they're worth & all i need to do is charge my phone, drone, laptop etc. Its strange in a age where burning energy is bad we're we're all obsessed with doing nothing but, lol. I've wasted so much money on unnecessary van stuff over 20years is embarrassing 😊. Great videos, well done👍 i know they're a right chore to make. Ps i never stay on campsites....
@ruthaisling Жыл бұрын
Thanks Andy, glad you like videos! From my experience travelling in campervans, I've found solar useful for topping up the batteries especially on days I'm not moving. I like to travel quite slow so there are sometimes days where I don't drive and therefore the batteries are not being topped up. I work online so need to constantly be charging my laptop which drains the batteries!

Solar panels are a good idea however you seem to get traveling around the northern parts of UK where the precipitation rate is high and so how can you use it efficiently in that weather condition or are the batteries long lasting one?
