I have been using a Balisong daily since 1982, so I speak with some knowledge on this subject. First there are two distinct groups who use this knife: The "Flippers", and the much smaller group using this knife for it's lethal and non lethal techniques. The Flippers make use of dexterity, acrobatics, and imagination to manipulate the knife for visual effect. I use the knife as it was intended using the handle, tip, ends, and blade with pugilistic intent. Both hands are trained equally and never leave my grip for acrobatic effect. I have used 3 of these inexpensive trainers, and would categorize them as "ok". My current users are a large and small Boker Balisong Plus, and Kershaw Lucha with trainer. The Kershaws have Flytanium Aluminum channeled handles, and the live blade uses the Titanium handles. Those cost around 300 bucks, but for a Balisong purchase that is inexpensive. They can cost many hundreds of dollars due to legalities involving import laws and being American made. Any day now the Cold Steel Arc Angel will be re-released in S35VN for less than 200 bucks.

Yeah I had known balisongs originated from the Philippines martial arts, I would never pretend to know how to use them effectively though without extensive training. I think even with non balisong knives without actual training people are just as likely to hurt themselves😂 though I have immense respect for those who are trained and have actual skill

I own a couple of balisongs that I was given. I proceeded to cut myself twice and said "Bruce Lee I ain't ". This was 50 years ago and my dexterity has decreased so that's no more. I'm in awe of the Bali kids at Bladeshow doing mind blowing stunts. The security team at the Galleria carry Bandaids and use them frequently. Keep going outside the box.

@OHLeftyKnifeGuy it's definitely not for everyone but I can appreciate the dexterity and discipline it takes to flip balis well

@@Rollshambo It is definitely an art. I haven't picked one up in probably thirty years, I am sure the technology has improved ten fold from the sloppy brass and steel karate shop special I remember.

Could i legitimately get a canyon and slightly reprofile it and sharpen it to have a tip and edge? I have everything I need and the experience but I am just curious if anyone has tried it and if it can hold an edge at all

I legitimately believe so, they're using 420hc steel on the blade and while I don't think it's super hard in rockwell terms I think you could absolutely put a serviceable edge on this one, what would give most people pause is the recurve portion of the edge as to get that properly you'd need either a flat stone thin enough to maintain contact or a rounded stone (meant specifically for recurve/hawksbill style edge geometry)..or turn the stone on its corner and sacrifice the corner of your flat stone..but yeah, definitely possible imo

My friend just got a 3D printer and what is one of the first thing he shows me? A 3D printed bali. Really light though, so not an effective trainer.
