Hey, guys! A couple years ago I made a video where I "Swedish death" cleaned my husband Charlie's closet...and it actually worked! I fell in love with the method--it works with all your possessions, from big to little. Even your sentimental clutter. So come clean and declutter with me. I feel like we could all use that in 2021. My last video on how to organize your home using Dollar Tree products landed on the KZbin trending page, and so many of you asked in the comments how to declutter and simplify your life to get organized. You said you felt overwhelmed, so I made this honest video about how I Swedish death cleaned my home to declutter and live more minimally. I wouldn't say I'm a minimalist, but living lighter has freed up so much more time to spend with family. Zero regrets! Thank you for letting me be so honest here and for watching!

I remember hearing about a mom, who after being widowed, realized how much her son missed dad. So she took her husband's favorite suits and had them made into a quilt for her son to take to college with him. She told him that it would like being wrapped up in a warm hug from dad.

I had a hard time parting with my grandmother's china, but it had bounced around our family for years. I finally took it to a friend who runs a local tea room we like to eat at. We got a meal out of it, but even better is seeing it on people's table arounds the tea room and enjoying it. That would have made grandma's heart so happy!

My husband died 10 years ago and I have had the hardest time letting go of his thing. Anything, even silly paper he wrote on just because he wrote on it. I have managed to let go of most of it, but I am still working through it. You sharing the story and letter from your great grandmother hit me right in the heart because I know I need to let go. I love the bear idea. I actually have a shirt of his that would make a really cool bear. And I collect bears, so I may go that route. Thank you for sharing :)

my husband dies three years ago and i have just sold the family home that he built 50 yrs ago. So i have downsized into a more manageable space and currently surrounded by boxes of treasures, his tools, the valentine day cards, my dad's war photos. but a pandemic doesn't help when charity shops are overcrowded, and lockdowns prevent us taking stuff out. Also much of the stuff he used for his work is archaic, computers have taken over, so stuff he treasured is probably landfill, as is the mountain of books, because people don't read any more. But i will, as i open boxes, make hard decisions, as i am not going to be doing dinner parties for 12 people any more. It's just the letting go of stuff family members have treasured, and i ended up as the keeper

@@janlumley304 As someone who struggles with letting go of the memory triggers, I took digital pictures of my kids art work K-12, mothers day and birthday cards, super tacky christmas tree ornaments that don't match my tree or my house but can't throw out because "awwww my first baby made this for me 20 years ago when he was 5 with his thumb prints...." etc and put them on my computer organized and burned to a flash drive. I got one of those digital picture frames so like on mothers day it will do a slide show of the cards over the years all day, a December one of the ornaments and reindeer hand antlers all month. (Your fathers war photos would be an awesome slide show for veterans and memorial day!) For me it helped making the decision to pitch or keep because now I can do both!

I also lost my mom about a year and a half ago. I've found it hard to let go of ANYTHING that has a tie to her, even clothes or toys she gave to my boys that they've outgrown. I'm getting better at it though. I think letting myself have a moment with the item, whatever it may be, to feel those feelings, cry, grieve, allows me to then look at it with practical eyes and makes it easier for me to let it go.

A question that simultaneously hurts, helps, and frees, is when I ask myself, "Is this who I am, or is this a fantasy about myself?" We spend so much time telling other people who we are, we sometimes forget to be who we really are. When I let go of the things I feel guilty about not using more, it frees me to focus on the things I do enjoy using and doing.

This video brought tears to my eyes as it brought me back to when I decided to sell my 2200 sq foot home that was chock full top to bottom (not in a hoardin way, but 16 years of collecting and accumulating). I read the "Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning," although I was just 55, and it changed my life. It took me about 5 months to do it (my Mom died in the middle of it), but I sold my home and kept just enough to furnish a place for one person. I now live in a 2 bedroom, 1 bath house (thankfully it has a walk-up attic for storage) that I keep very tidy (except my office, LOL). DOWNSIZING was the best thing I ever did! I can clean my house in an hour, and I also have peace of mind knowing I am not leaving a big mess for my relatives to clean up if I should go tomorrow.

While in the process of downsizing from a 3 bedroom house to a 1 bedroom apartment, I am making slow, steady progress. I like the way a smaller place makes it easier to organize things so that they can be found later. It took me a long time to understand why my Dad had so many duplicate items. Now, I know, that it is easier to buy a new flashlight or hammer, rather than find the one that is in the house somewhere. The minimalist concept is harder than I thought it would be since my hoarding tendency is an issue, though it is a milder version compared to my late father's.

I would not want my family to have the burden of decluttering my stuff. My Mother is a first-generation Swedish-American. The "death cleaning" is real and she has done this for decades! She routinely cleaned out closets, drawers, rooms. She's been sorting pictures, labeling them, etc. all in a quest to make it easier for us when she's gone. As soon as we moved out and got our own apartments, etc. she presented us with a box of our school things putting the responsibility on us to save or toss. She is driven partly by genetics and partly by her experiences as the daughter and daughter-in-law of Depression era parents and grandparents. She and Dad spent months cleaning out their homes after they passed and much of what they found was rotten, unlabeled, broken or no longer used so it was tossed rather than repurposed or sold. I'm grateful for her fore thought.

This was a very touching video. I am over 70 now and have been slowly decluttering my house because I don't want to leave a huge mess for my children to deal with. It is hard. When I was a freshman in college our home burnt completely. I have next to nothing of the first 19 years of my life. Because of this it's very, very hard to let go but I am seriously working on it. I appreciate your feelings on this. It will definitely help me. Thank you!

BRAVO Jeanne! I'm 71, soon to be 72, and I've been decluttering for the past 10 years, things I've held on to for years because my sister would guilt me into it. My sister passed several years ago, and I'm now free to declutter without guilt. Just because someone gifted you something doesn't mean you have to keep it forever, use it, love it, then pass it on so someone else can love it.

I sympathize. I grew up poor, and it's taken me 45 years to gather what I have. Lots of garage and estate sales, thrift stores, hand-me-downs, etc. I'm retired now, and not in good health, so I no longer truly need much of what I own. But, the fear of not being able to replace something is deeply imbedded . . .

My Mom died young( 41 years old)… and she was a magnificent seamstress who designed and sewed her own beautiful and extensive wardrobe. After she died, we kept her clothes hanging in a large, dry basement closet for three years. I remember looking at them and smelling each piece. Mom’s “fragrance” was still on them! Dad said that we would know when to get rid of them. God would give us a sign! As it turned out, Dad’s secretary had a needy sister-in-law who was beginning to work outside the home. Dad gave her all Mom’s gorgeous clothes...except for the ones that we daughters chose to keep for ourselves, of course. The lady was so tickled! She told Dad that she had a fashion show, trying everything on, for her family. We were delighted!

"A better and more faithful reminder..." man oh man, I needed to hear this. My folks have passed 26 years ago, and we are now at the point of downsizing for retirement. Knowing I can't take all the sentimental things with me, especially those that belonged to my parents, and my kids when they were small, is torture. Your comment about finding a "faithful reminder" is so, so true. I think I can tackle those sentimental items a little easier now. Swedish Death Cleaning is an excellent book. Your video was great. I know you have sons, not daughters, but PLEASE Save something of GG's for each of your sons as a family heirloom. Also, before I got rid of the remainder of my mother's china tea cups, I gave one cup/saucer as Christmas gifts to each of my girl cousins. Everything you own owns a piece of you. I like that. I was well on the road to becoming a hoarder after the pandemic hit. Lost my job and home. Lived in a car for six months. Now that I have a place, I do NOT want to own more than I can easily move. I went from not throwing anything away to throwing everything away that I don't need right now. Much less stress. That "abundance" is a truth; I felt that I was losing everything, so I held on to everything. Now unused things just seem like a burden. Thanks for your help! I unlove things, making room for another “memory”. If I buy a new piece of clothing, an old piece of clothing is donated. I love your ideas.

I’ve always tried to live this way- living in a small NYC apartment really forces you to be very thoughtful and aware of your “stuff.” And as a mom in a home, I hate how much time is spent relocating and putting “stuff” away which makes me want less of it! It starts to own you!

For some folks, keeping parents and grandparents things bring joy, but for many hanging onto those things out of a sense of sentimental responsibility can be a burden. When my mom passed, I only kept 2 or 3 items of hers. My MIL is in the downsizing stage of life now and she expects us to keep everything she owns that has value to her--furniture, dishes, china, books, wall hangings and household decor and every photo she has collected for 91 years. It is overwhelming. Drawing a line with living relatives and gently explaining that family members DON'T want their clutter is a difficult task. Kudos to you for doing Swedish death cleaning and living that lifestyle now.

I did the "Swedish Death" cleaning about two years ago and got rid of so much. Thank you for the reminder that we all need a reboot every once in a while.

Yes, if you are going to keep them, I agree, use them! When we got married 29 years ago, my husband and I had very little. We never put our wedding gifts of crystal vases or bowls on the top shelf to use “someday”. We just used them every day right next to our plastic dishes from the discount store. The crystal bowl holding our fruit on our island is a wedding gift and I think of my friend who gave it to us every day. If something breaks I toss it without guilt because the item has been well used and well loved and I always think the giver would appreciate that. Think of it this way - if you gave a friend a mug and somehow learned that for 29 years they thought of you every single day when they used it, would you be hurt if it broke and they tossed it? I think most people would be touched that their friend was thinking of them every day. ❤️

I am not an emotional person. This video touched me because we all hold on to things to remember times in our lives, people, etc. It can really weight us down. Thanks for being strong... I'm done crying now.

I cried watching this. I have lost my older sister and both my parents back ten years ago and I miss them. It is hard for me to let go of the items. I will try to do what you have done and choose a few special items only. My kitchen and my personal stuff need a declutter badly.

I'm sorry for your losses. It's so hard to declutter loved ones possessions. I think, the fewer items we have, the more we enjoy them. God bless you as you try to weed through your things. One channel I watched spoke of putting things "in quarantine" to see if you can do without them. She had a basement (her channel is The Minimal Mom) so that worked well for her. If you have a place to store stuff away she says you can put it away and if you don't miss it after a prescribed period of time, (months, years, whatever) that means you can do without it. Maybe that would help if you have a storage spot where you can stash items. I think everyone has gotten rid of something and they wish they hadn't - however - I think it happens less often than we think. I think we tend to only remember the stuff that we wish we hadn't gotten rid of - LOL - and maybe the space and simplicity we gained by all the other stuff we got rid of can be overshadowed by that ONE thing we wish we'd kept. It's better to get rid of 10 things you don't want and 2 things you wish you hadn't than to have 2 things you want and 10 things you don't need. Right? LOL. Cluttering conundrums!

I sell All of my used clothes (except the ripped/stained ones of course!) And when I am unsure about an Item I look up for how much it would sell and then ask myself :" would I rather keep the Item or gain the money?" This helped me a lot to let go of clothes where I am kinda unsure

Thank you for sharing the letter from your Great Grandmother, that was so sweet I cried with you. So true, as a hoarder, we can find so many reasons to hold on, and if it's sentimental forget about it! LOL thanks for helping me get some FREEDOM for myself.

Thank you for sharing this video, esp. the part on using items in remembrance of loved ones. At 54, I'm experiencing sorting through items from 6 family members no longer here....this video brought encouragement, happiness & peace in the decisions I must make in order to feel unburdened & live life as my family members genuinely would've wanted me to live. ☺ Thank you, again! 💝

Fabulous video!!! I’ve been gleaning things ours for quite awhile! After our house burned 5 years ago, I realized that the “stuff” that was burned was all replaceable! Fortunately, no pictures were destroyed, but we began getting serious about getting rid of things we’d collected over 52 years of marriage!! ❤️

I was praying that this video would really be the one that helped me learn how to just let it go.! It's also a good idea if you also take a picture of your good sentimental items that you cannot keep , I heard. Thank you very much for taking the time to do this for all of us! Of course it helps! Do you ever find yourself looking for something you got rid of just the week before? I do that LOL! I'm praying that doesn't happen ,again to me, either! So I will ask myself also, would I run back into grab this if the house were on fire?" Unfortunately, I was moving, this was before plastic bins so I had everything in cardboard boxes, and everything flooded. So I had no choice or choices! The next time that I moved, everything was in the car and I was driving down the highway when the car caught on fire and I had no idea because it was underneath. The two major destroyers... Water and fire. So ask yourself also if you had enough time to grab a few things, what do you think they would be? This was helpful thank you! Blessings to you! Thank you again!!! Because paperwork is the number one problem today due to junk mail, and sorting it! We all need to start with filing cabinets A through Z... It's a life changer! Thank you so much again! We all appreciate your time and effort! I can't wait to see what you have in store for us next! I stink at computers so I hope I don't miss it! God bless you!!!!❤️❤️❤️

Isn't it amazing that while your great-grandmother couldn't have known the impact, the Lord did know that when she gave you those teacups at 13 that one day you would use them and think of her as she wished, but instead of using them the way she imagined - by drinking tea from them - that you would use them to help hundreds of thousands of people let go of the things weighing them down. Watching this video a few days ago gave me the courage to declutter and give away a ton of stuff I've been afraid to let go of. It feels fantastic. And I'm still going. Thanks great-grandma and thank you Kathryn.
