Interloper is really only intended for those who have already learned how to play the game, and to a lesser extent I'd maybe say the same of Stalker. If you want to really enjoy playing TLD, you're best to first play through the Wintermute story mode at least once (all available chapters) - it's not exactly a tutorial for the survival mechanics, but it should at least help to point you in the right direction, and will definitely help you start to develop the single most important survival skill in the game - map knowledge. Then you can work your way up through the difficulty levels as you like, until you find the challenge level that best suits how you want to play. This really isn't the kind of game you can just jump straight into at the highest level for a fun challenge, because all that'll happen is you constantly make one mistake after another and the game will chew you up and spit you out, over and over again. You have to take your time, learn the game's mechanics and how to manage them and even use them to your advantage, rather than just randomly doing stuff and paying the price for your own bad decisions. And that's what really makes this game special to me - you eventually realise that every time something bad happens to your character, it's always because you screwed up somewhere. Sure, the game-world is unforgiving, but it's not like it's out to get you like most games are. Learn how to play along with its rules, and you'll eventually find your place on Great Bear Island.

The store you're looking at at 6:56 always has a box of matches (on interloper). Rabbits are nothing but a liability until you have a way to cook them. Predators hunt you by scent while you're carrying carcasses, meat, fresh guts, or anything else that will drop as a decoy.

@Pest789 Ah, okay, understandable. What region did you like best?
@Pest78911 күн бұрын
Each of them has its purpose, but I never stay in one region for long. I constantly move through the whole game world looting and hunting to ensure I always have new renewable resources available. My favorite region to start in is Hushed River Valley because it has guaranteed matches, bedroll, Mackinaw, hammer, and hacksaw. I also enjoy travelling through Ash Canyon to get the backpack. Mystery Lake is fantastic for picking up a bedroll, hammer, and hacksaw if you don't know HRV.

5 minutes of real time = 1 hour in game Freezing does 20% of your health/in game hour (40% if you have hypothermia) Exhaustion does 1%/hr Thirst does 2%/hr Hunger does 1%/hr You did great for your first few runs, but you need to try to be more mindful of prioritizing warming up. It is generally cold in the mornings and warm in the afternoons. So at the end there, you should have waited until the afternoon to go out and look for food. You would have taken some hunger damage, but leaving in the morning instantly drained your warmth meter and then you died mainly from the cold, the hunger was hardly a factor, even though you starved most of the night. You can also harvest rose hips, reishi mushrooms on stumps/fallen logs, and birch bark to make tea which can be instantly drank or reheated to keep you warm longer. You can also warm up cans of peaches, pork and beans, and tomato soup, but you need a can opener, knife, or hatchet to open them.

@Hoagie_Man Thanks for all the tips. I appreciate it. I'll start going out in the afternoon looking for food(maybe mornings when buildings are close by). Also, the teas sound very useful. I'll keep an eye out.

@@Tattie-s2o Another tip that will help you save matches is that if you use a match to light a fire and fail to light the fire, you lose the match. However, you can use a match to light a torch, then use the lit torch to light the fire, and if you fail, the torch will remain lit, and you can keep trying, all using one match. You can pull torches out of any fire that has at least 10 minutes of life left, so once you make your first fire you should pull some torches out just so you have some. If the torch you're holding is about to go out, you can throw it on the ground, pull out a new torch, and light it off the one on the ground. Also, you can light fires with flares in a pinch if you have a flare but no matches and desperately need fire.

Talk about jumping in the deep end. The Long Dark is a VERY hard game. Your not supposed to go straight to interloper! You need to learn the game first before you can master it!
@jaiclary842310 күн бұрын
I don't think I agree in this case. Stalker and Interloper are so different they're basically different games. Playing Stalker or below will help you learn the controls and the systems to a point, but the gameplay knowledge really doesn't translate. Just as the most obvious example, you'll never forge a bow or knife in Stalker except perhaps as a lark, while crafting them in Interloper is literally the only way to move past the early-game.

Not finding matches in time has been my demise many times
@jaiclary842310 күн бұрын
One of the few serious flaws with the game, but in reality this should never happen. Matches can spawn randomly, but also have guaranteed locations in every region. The reason I call it a flaw is it forces you to metagame, but unfortunately you *must* metagame because the fact of the matter is if you spawn in Pleasant Valley you absolutely do need to know that the guaranteed matches are in the convenience store at Thompson's Crossing or you're just going to die. Obviously if someone is dying on a lower difficulty that's just an experience issue, there are plenty of fire sources on anything short of interloper and even on interloper you don't need anywhere near the amount they give you unless you're pushing for a personal record.

In early Interloper games, you need to keep moving and looting. You need to find more clothing to stay warm, and find more matches, or ideally, a mag sense. Map knowledge is crucial, and comes with time.
@jaiclary842310 күн бұрын
Mag lens isn't actually very useful early game. Your imperative is to travel, explore, and gather, you don't have the luxury of waiting for perfect weather. The big downfall of The Long Dark is the factthat it's balanced around meta-knowledge. A real shame, in my opinion. I'd love a version of this game that successfully embraces its rogue-like nature without leaning so heavily on knowing the maps.
@paulreinmund20389 күн бұрын
@@jaiclary8423 I disagree. The point of having the mag lens is NOT to wait for good weather. The point is to conserve matches, and only use them when there is no other option. Even if you can't use the mag lens every day, you can still use it often enough so matches are a backup or emergency use only.
@jaiclary84239 күн бұрын
@@paulreinmund2038 Sounds suspiciously like you want to eat your cake and have it still. Maybe you legit play in such a way as to save every match from day 1. I advise against it, because the world is only getting colder while you huddle waiting for good weather, but you do you. And if you *do* take advantage of the relative warmth of the early game, that means usually going out in weather that isn't mag-lens friendly. There's no two ways about it.
@paulreinmund20389 күн бұрын
@@jaiclary8423 dude, I just said don’t wait for good mag-lense weather. Keep moving, but having the mag lense allows you to save matches.
