This video is a light comparison between Far Cry 2 and S.T.A.L.K.E.R., titled Ubisoft's S.T.A.L.K.E.R.. I absolutely love both games, and while I know this might not be the best idea for a video, I wanted to share a unique perspective as someone living in South Africa. I had a lot of fun playing and reflecting on these games, and I hope you enjoy the journey as much as I did!

I loved farcry2's sens eof immersion. Getting into vehicles, checking your map, pulling a slug from your arm is all done in first person.

Playing FC2 for the first time in 2020 was such a fresh experience from the open world formula I was familiar with. The setting wasn't merely romanticized, but reinforced by immersive gameplay elements that tied directly with even a lack-luster story, elevating it into a realm of experience I have seldom felt in other games. Some of the same feelings I had with it were similar to what others have said playing the Stalker series. Though in this case, I like to summarize FC2 as simply: _"Hardcore enough for the sandbox itself to always kick you down, yet casual enough to give you the tools to pick yourself back up again."_ Both games have a degree of unpredictability where every playthrough feels different, with situations completely outside the player's control that forces them to react to them on the fly, with the equally unpredictable ability to offer an advantage of opportunity. In the case of Far Cry 2, it is the interplay of both hardcore and casual elements that is a fantastic formula (one that stalker leans more heavily into hardcore for pure immersion), Such examples is ammo resupply being from one universal item and weapons are one-time purchases. This prevents hoarding and encourages weapon/ammo use with the temporary risk of ammo conservation and weapon durability still being ever-present concerns. Vehicles can easily be disabled, but also repaired. Checkpoints and patrols are punishing, incentivizing exploration to discover safer routes. Travel to-and-from objectives is tedious, but encourages navigation and proper planning of routes mentioned previously (this is how I discovered strategies like driving with the headlights off at night so the player can to pass through checkpoints with enough delay to prevent a case). This last example leads me into my second summary: _"A game that does not hold your hand, will not tug you down the beaten path."_ Despite the myriad of challenges in a truly hostile environment (even your safe houses can be surrounded by a patrol waiting in ambush) with enough time and planning the player can discover how to use weapons, vehicles, locations, and even the sandbox itself to complete difficult objectives easily. Assassination targets, ammo crates, and explosive objectives can be destroyed from a clear enough sightline and a well placed shot. Pursuing enemies can be fooled by use of concealment or explosives detonated in their area, Pursuing vehicles can be thrown off by taking a sharp enough turn around the right obstacles, or use of a nimble dune buggy to slip through narrow footpaths, etc. Lastly, What makes all this possible is the observant, tenacious, and unpredictable enemy AI who employ effective tactics that force the player to have to adapt themselves to be one step ahead. The enemy will hide from sniper fire, forcing the player to reposition, they can see for hundreds of yards, and follow a strict last-known-position system without obvious indicators (making stealth difficult but not impossible). Finally, at times they can outsmart a player even with a seemingly foolproof plan. In my case I had taken up a sniper's position in open savanna to engage a nearby objective; as soon as I thought it was safe to reposition due to the enemy taking cover behind fences, they retook the advantage by flying out in vehicles to rapidly close the distance where I was left without cover. These are just small aspects that I can articulate about why this game left such an impression on me in recent years.

You can save the game in Far Cry 2 at any time you want. If you playing a PC version that is. There is dedicated buttons for Quick Save and Quick Load that will allow you to do that. I played Far Cry 2 since the day it came out and this is one of the most interesting and fun games in my opinion. Same goes for Stalker. I'm a massive Stalker fan since the very first game and I love all of the Stalker games that I played, except Stalker 2 because it came out in a unfinished state so I see no point of playing it right now.
