I like the fact that it puts all the stomp/amp/cab on one processor and since it can be combined it uses very little processing power. Has anyone taken one apart to see what DSP Tonex uses?

You can make the reverb sound somewhat like a delay, but I agree that this thing really should have delay.

Players would still need to buy an amplifier ($$$$) and or speakers ($$$$) PLUS the Tone X ($$$) to get the sounds out of the unit vs ONE full unit that literally does everything. (And or a DAW/INTERFACE/Computer etc.) which is also $$$$$$$$$

@@doctersound9630 what?? Tonex actually has the lowest price and barrier to entry vs any comparable modeler!😂 FREE profiles to try it, $9 a month for full access on iPad / mobile?! Are you kidding? It’s no different than any other modeler.. If you have your own interface, headphones, and/or speakers you’re already good to go. It just lacks effects.

I just bought the TONEX pedal a few months ago ... after playing with the computer based version of the software. The pedal will make playing under the typical constraints on stage these days much more practical. In the studio, it will still be my tube amps ... why use an imitation of the real thing when you can have the original. Very satisfied so far with TONEX.

I was looking at this pedal, the NUX Amp Academy, an HX Stomp, the Humboldt Simplifier, and a few other options. I finally decided on the cheapest option available - the Joyo Preamp House R-15. No programming, no micro/sub menus, no edit software, no delay or reverb, just the pedal, with 9 amps (a clean and a dirty option for each). Just turn the knobs and save one clean and one dirt preset. That's it. Plain and simple. Oh, it does have an FX loop. And sounds great.

I've been very happy with the ToneX and combined with an H90 it's been my choice for low volume home practice and recording. I think some of the software UI will improve over time and I think they intended the workflow to be that you would solely use the software to play and tweak your presets and then transfer them over to the unit. I think it would make a lot of sense for IK to add some kind of social media style upvoting and commenting to the amp captures. Also the ability to tip someone for a cool capture would be nice. Also, I've found it helpful to name all of my captures starting with my initials. So for example, "TF DRRI Clean" This way when I search the library for "TF" all of my captures come up.

In the iPhone I'm using AUM which hosts Tonex as AUv3 plugin along with Eventide Blackhole Reverb! Totally amazing tones all running at 24 bit 96khz on the Xtone Pro interface! This is already so interesting to me.. For the price. I'd never use it to capture, but I'd use others captures.. 😛 Your captures sound outstanding already man! God that MP1 is heavenly! :-) Love those preamps! Very cool.. I agree, the compressor was a strange choice. It must have been easy to include or something. I love the gain. The MP1 sounds best to me so far of the models you've captured sir! Of course, I'm bias for the MP1.. The synergy thing sounded like it lost signal or something. Strange! The cleans I thought were good sir! Man, I"m loving those Lace pickups the more I hear them on here.. Wow.. I'm going to have to build another strat just for some Lace pickups.. Dammit.. 😛 Have a great day my friend.. I'm off to rest after working hard at the diner.. Be safe sir! I hope you didn't get any of the bad weather there.. I heard there was a cyclone on the western part of the country? That software is a little weak if you ask me.. It would be frustrating I can see ..

Every time I click on these videos, I always think someone is going to make some cool music with new tech. And it is always the same heavy rock, treble pickup, high gain, fizzy stuff. Over and over on millions of channels. Ola's channel alone proves that this type of sound can achieved now with nearly any amp. And you kind of tricked me because you said you had criticisms of this pedal - but of course it was not the sound.

I hear you, loud and clear. Electric guitar is a very versatile instrument and you wouldn’t know it from KZbin demos of preamps. You might check Michael Nielsen and Leo Gibson sites for a more musically flexible look at these devices. Absolutely agree with the desperate need for lo-cut and hi-cut! It needs to be implemented into all the cab modes, including a full amp+cab capture. Honestly blows my mind they left this out. I can understand from the point of view that Tonex was only computer software first, in DAW slapping lo-pass and hi-pass ain't such big deal, but a live pedal format for gigging... Can't believe they don't have it. Way to cripple your own device

About the workflow to edit the presets, you can put the Tonex pedal in interface mode (Global Settings > Operation > Interface) and then you can tweak the presets and try them at the same time on the pedal. When you're happy with the sound, you can copy it to the pedal.

The other issue with capture is the static nature of them. Often captures won't need tweaking because the whole point is they're a great sound right out of the box for the really good ones. But everybody is diffferent. I think Leo Gibson did the math if you want to capture every setting on even a simple amp like friedman pink taco it'd take 30,000 plus captures and over 400 days of amp training. Alternatively, it might be possible to capture the each knob range? Like run the bleep bloops through and it prompts you to turn Bass knob full range back and forth, then prompts you to do gain knob etc.

The main drawback is that you need 2. I think they have done an amazing job. Captures require a lot less processing than models, so they are able to use an inexpensive chip and make it sound awesome. Their ecosystem is great, but become bulky when you add all the pieces with 2 tonex pedals.
@lorenmorgan1931
@lorenmorgan1931 Жыл бұрын
I agree. They need to make a Helix/Headrush killer that has Amplitube, and can run 5 instances of Tonex. Their AIR speaker models are nothing short of game changing and I think is the most overlooked feature of Amplitube. Wondering if this is the end all goal, however they are dropping low cost interfaces at NAMM so it will be at least a year before we see somthing like this. Headrush seems to be king of this world right now, so that's who will get my money. NAMM isn't portable sadly lol

I think the biggest problem with user captures is that most people don't know how to mic a cab, or don't always have the best environment for miking a cab. The vast majority of captures include the cab and they are usually cringy. Tonex allows you to "disable" the cab but it's using some sort of algorithm to remove it and it just does not work well.

Exactly my thoughts, re: the criticisms of this thing. I had it for a few weeks and struggled to resolve a long list of issues. After most of them were answered, i was still left with one or two glitchy problems, but the most frustrating was that the app did not operate as an editor for the pedal. I would have kept the ToneX pedal had there been even basic integration between the app and the hardware. But, i returned it and i'll stay with my Kemper for a while longer. The ToneX sounds great, though.... Maybe i'll revisit it in a year, if the UI has been evolved, but as it stands, it's a ridiculous mishmash of two many independent elements, with illogical layouts and integration. If you're the kind of person who just wants to play the pedal out of the box, or maybe just load in a handful of profiles and then not rely on the app again, it's probably a great device. But, i am used to the Kemper and having constant interfacing between the editor and the device. in fact, i never even touch the Kemper itself-all the manipulation is in Rig Manager. Which is simple to use and just makes sense-and this is after i used to think it was kludgy. But, in comparison to ToneX, Rig Manager is brilliant.

Agreed. It’s a stellar model player pedal at a good price. It’s not going to have every possible feature for everyone, but that price…. You can capture incredibly accurate captures or your amps with your personal knob settings. This is crucial. A generic capture by an engineer who hasn’t or doesn’t know how to squeeze every drop of tone out of the amp, gives you a model that is not the best possible version of that for you. Bring all your boutique amps best sounds to the gig. For the price of not much more than a good quality boost pedal.

Unless you can hear these units in person you can't really tell what's going to reach you. I'm going to try the Boss unit I can always return it. I don't think I'll be disappointed.

Bit of a different perspective,but I find no difference in searching for a good capture,than say scrolling thru 10,000 IR’s on any other device…some are very good…others not so much….I do agree that there could definitely be improvements on the editor,or lack thereof…..at the end of the day,being able to accurately capture my amps and stick them on a board,or straight into my AxeFXIII is well worth $400,even with the preset/editor challenges…guitar amps also aren’t stereo…you just run your FX behind the ToneX like you would an amp,no loop needed…but I don’t really care about the FX,I have that covered…It’s a great piece of gear that will only get better!

I've been getting some great sounds with the Tonex VST, but the software is clunky as hell, and the pedal is not ready for the big time. But the platform could be great if users with sick amp collections fill it with great captures.

Might be my speakers, but it sounds a bit fizzy, and "messy" at times.

Yeah not loving the fizzy tones. The tone quality is not there imo. I’m passing sticking with my Axe fx2 and Kemper.

Interesting, specially for a player like me, I mean, a non-professional player who always pops headphones on. BTW, that's the reason I think they should put a send/return loop in it, instead of a stereo output. It's just my potential user opinion. :) Thanks!

Leon, thank you for sharing your captures for free. However...if one only has the PC version, we can not access them. Another channel, Tone Junkie, managed to make a capture of a "Purple Plexi" and through a link on his site I was able to import that capture. Is there any way you could look into that? Your captures...especially the ADA MP1 caught my attention since I had both the MP1 and MP2 back in the day. Thanks for at least considering this. Great job showing the pro's and con's of the unit.

Spot on observation about the computer app/plug-in - it is super-clunky and un-user friendly. I don’t have the pedal, but I have the paid app/plug-in, and I was very impressed at how well it captured my favourite signal chain. I love the way I can record direct using MY individual sound just by calling up a plug-in preset…. But finding my capture again in the app/plug-in is ridiculously convoluted! IK needs to make it simple to find things, and by the looks of the pedal, the UI has a long way to go… but you’re right - 1st world problems- How spoilt are guitarists in 2023?!?!

My main complaint is that I simply think it isn't as good as Neural DSP for ease of use or stereo width in my DAW. The Quad Cortex seems like an easier device to use too. Also, the effects are better from Neural DSP. Personally, I use the FM3 for real life stuff. The effects can't be beat and it sounds great. Mostly, it's not that expensive for something that does it all and is compact.
@LeonTodd
@LeonTodd Жыл бұрын
Quad Cortex is also 4 times the price, so if you only need a capture player this makes a lot of sense. For price/tone/size the FM3 is in a real sweet spot IMO which makes it one of my favourite pieces of gear ever.

I see more and more test videos that try to touch the ToneX pedal more critically and mostly overshoot the mark a bit with the benchmarks. As a few other comments here have already written, I will also wait with a purchase until the next version or the next development. The FX loop criticism is bullshit, but would make sense if the pedal still gets a power amp. And of course an XLR for the IR. And then it would be a 100% competitor for Kemper and QC. Sorry, but the profiling already beats the Kemper and the QC would have to be cut in half price wise to remain relevant then. What IK have done there is a game changer and if I worked at Kemper I would have many sleepless nights.
@Cpt_Adama
@Cpt_Adama Жыл бұрын
Kemper doesn't have an FX loop either and with a complete pre-amp/power-amp capture/picture not really feasible. I suppose you could do it with 2 Tonex pedals by capturing a pre-amp on one and a power amp on the other and then insert your effects between them. Really only modelers not capture/profilers are going to be able to have an FX loop.
@LeonTodd
@LeonTodd Жыл бұрын
I'm not suggesting being able to place something between the pre/power amp like an fx loop on an amp, more a "stereo insert" that can be placed after the amp/cab and routed to the stereo outs or headphones

After all the hype... it's the best unit in the entire universe, i will sell my all amp collection...please... i can't stand these "review"/adds anymore... Thank you for your honest review, greatly appreciated ! This is what we need to decide if we want the unit or not, plus and minus cause there are always some minus. Great Job Leon, as usual !

My big problem with the ToneX Pedal from a bass players point of view is that there's no way to send the signal out the second output without the IR.

12:05 you captured the sound of the gain over saturating the preamp tubes. My Triaxis didnt do this until i switched the pre tubes out to tung sol and my Soldano x88 stopped making that sound when i dialed back the pre tubes, so this was all i was left with.

Hi Leon. The Tonex is a great pedal and agree that a negative is definitely that other people don’t capture their amps as I would want them and so would require more tweaking - potentially more than on a modeller. The thing I like most about Tonex is that I’ve captured my own amps exactly as I want and then can take them wherever I go. I use it with my board which includes an hx stomp so is a pretty powerful tool 😊

Yeah NAM is basically a passion project that's had a user base explode very quickly. I'm sure they'll come up with some more streamlined workflow with it, but for someone used to modellers ToneX is seamless

I ended up getting the Tonex pedal about a week ago. I really like it. I am running it in the loop of the AxeFx 3. I like a lot of the captures! I still need to experiment with using the drive captures in front of a real amp (with the IR shut off) I think the thing I like the most is the Plate reverb…I really like that a lot for some reason. Glad you have some captures up!! Your Axefx patches have been great, I’m sure these captures will be great as well! Are you going to capture your Marshall JMP-1? I had one of those back in the day…kind of miss it. Haha
