I just bought the TONEX pedal a few months ago ... after playing with the computer based version of the software. The pedal will make playing under the typical constraints on stage these days much more practical. I was looking at this pedal, the NUX Amp Academy, an HX Stomp, the Humboldt Simplifier, and a few other options. I finally decided on the cheapest option available - the Joyo Preamp House R-15. No programming, no micro/sub menus, no edit software, no delay or reverb, just the pedal, with 9 amps (a clean and a dirty option for each). Just turn the knobs and save one clean and one dirt preset. That's it. Plain and simple. Oh, it does have an FX loop. And sounds great.

I've been very happy with the ToneX and combined with an H90 it's been my choice for low volume home practice and recording. I think some of the software UI will improve over time and I think they intended the workflow to be that you would solely use the software to play and tweak your presets and then transfer them over to the unit. I think it would make a lot of sense for IK to add some kind of social media style upvoting and commenting to the amp captures. Also the ability to tip someone for a cool capture would be nice. Also, I've found it helpful to name all of my captures starting with my initials. So for example, "TF DRRI Clean" This way when I search the library for "TF" all of my captures come up.

I got one to complement my axe fx 3, and to have decent amp sounds when gigging again (I recently started after years of inactivity). Paired with the h90 it sounds great, ut it's so painful that to set either the tonex or the h90 I need a computer. I have been waiting for ages for a mobile app for the h90, and for the tonex it would be amazi g to be able to load captures and IR's from my tablet or mobile. But the feature I would beg the most for is a tuner in the tonex. It has the dsp power and the display capability and would be super easy to implement. I wonder why they haven't done it. Thanks Leon for another great review!

About the workflow to edit the presets, you can put the Tonex pedal in interface mode (Global Settings > Operation > Interface) and then you can tweak the presets and try them at the same time on the pedal. When you're happy with the sound, you can copy it to the pedal.

The other issue with capture is the static nature of them. Often captures won't need tweaking because the whole point is they're a great sound right out of the box for the really good ones. But everybody is diffferent. I think Leo Gibson did the math if you want to capture every setting on even a simple amp like friedman pink taco it'd take 30,000 plus captures and over 400 days of amp training. Alternatively, it might be possible to capture the each knob range? Like run the bleep bloops through and it prompts you to turn Bass knob full range back and forth, then prompts you to do gain knob etc.

Exactly my thoughts, re: the criticisms of this thing. I had it for a few weeks and struggled to resolve a long list of issues. After most of them were answered, i was still left with one or two glitchy problems, but the most frustrating was that the app did not operate as an editor for the pedal. I would have kept the ToneX pedal had there been even basic integration between the app and the hardware. But, i returned it and i'll stay with my Kemper for a while longer. The ToneX sounds great, though.... Maybe i'll revisit it in a year, if the UI has been evolved, but as it stands, it's a ridiculous mishmash of two many independent elements, with illogical layouts and integration. If you're the kind of person who just wants to play the pedal out of the box, or maybe just load in a handful of profiles and then not rely on the app again, it's probably a great device. But, i am used to the Kemper and having constant interfacing between the editor and the device. in fact, i never even touch the Kemper itself-all the manipulation is in Rig Manager. Which is simple to use and just makes sense-and this is after i used to think it was kludgy. But, in comparison to ToneX, Rig Manager is brilliant.

Kemper doesn't have an FX loop either and with a complete pre-amp/power-amp capture/picture not really feasible. Really only modelers not capture/profilers are going to be able to have an FX loop.

I see more and more test videos that try to touch the ToneX pedal more critically and mostly overshoot the mark a bit with the benchmarks. As a few other comments here have already written, I will also wait with a purchase until the next version or the next development. The FX loop criticism is bullshit, but would make sense if the pedal still gets a power amp. And of course an XLR for the IR. And then it would be a 100% competitor for Kemper and QC. Sorry, but the profiling already beats the Kemper and the QC would have to be cut in half price wise to remain relevant then. What IK have done there is a game changer and if I worked at Kemper I would have many sleepless nights.

Spot on observation about the computer app/plug-in - it is super-clunky and un-user friendly. I don’t have the pedal, but I have the paid app/plug-in, and I was very impressed at how well it captured my favourite signal chain. I love the way I can record direct using MY individual sound just by calling up a plug-in preset…. But finding my capture again in the app/plug-in is ridiculously convoluted! IK needs to make it simple to find things, and by the looks of the pedal, the UI has a long way to go… but you’re right - 1st world problems- How spoilt are guitarists in 2023?!?!

Do you plan to cover the new Tonex One pedal? - it looks amazing!!

I think the biggest problem with user captures is that most people don't know how to mic a cab, or don't always have the best environment for miking a cab. The vast majority of captures include the cab and they are usually cringy. Tonex allows you to "disable" the cab but it's using some sort of algorithm to remove it and it just does not work well.

Every time I watch videos on these new Tonex captures I think someone somewhere with lots of time and money has or will rent a proper studio out and spend months capturing as many amps and cabs as possible. If I were a guitarist, that's what I'd be doing, but I'm a drummer and have software like Superior Drummer that's already done it for me.

Thats exactly my experience with theTonex. Its like for one good capture there is 20 that are bad/mediocre. I think that paid capture packs is the way to go.

Yup, I've found some captures that make me absolutely love the ToneX more than anything else I've owned, but trawling through the user captures is definitely a lesson in just how many people have no idea how to record guitar, haha. I know tone is in the ear of the beholder and all that, but some of them sound like they recorded a transistor practice amp under a pile of blankets down the end of a hallway.

A tale as old as time. This was the only life we had as Kemper owners back like 10 years ago when it came out and there weren’t any pro captures.

Every time I click on these videos, I always think someone is going to make some cool music with new tech. And it is always the same heavy rock, treble pickup, high gain, fizzy stuff. Over and over on millions of channels. Ola's channel alone proves that this type of sound can achieved now with nearly any amp. And you kind of tricked me because you said you had criticisms of this pedal - but of course it was not the sound.

I hear you, loud and clear. Electric guitar is a very versatile instrument and you wouldn’t know it from KZbin demos of preamps. You might check Michael Nielsen and Leo Gibson sites for a more musically flexible look at these devices. Each is a brilliant composer and player as well as being very astute about the market and technologies. You will hear not only beautiful clean tones, you will hear them applied. Best of luck.

I fully agree. And also swap guitars in between. They just showing off themselves iso the product!

My big problem with the ToneX Pedal from a bass players point of view is that there's no way to send the signal out the second output without the IR.

With my blown out Line 6 XP and my current GT-100, I can run music through my pedal box to practice to. Can I do this with TONEX, or do I just hear the guitar?

You know I don’t want to have anything to do with capturing sound. I want to know how it functions as an amp with tons of sounds to lode in it. I’m done lugging around all these have tube amps.
