*Never forget: Tradition is just peer pressure from dead people!* 😂 I loved hearing Thomas explaining why he doesn't eat it, because... same!! I'm predominantly Swedish (with some surprise Norwegian in there too, thanks Ancestry!) and was very involved with the Scandinavian Studies faculty in my university. Every year, they would serve surströmming at our Julfest and when asked why I wouldn't even try it, I explained that this was something they likely ate out of necessity, not because it was their first choice hahaha. I did, however, inherit the love of pickled everything and open-faced sandwiches with cold shrimp. Skål!

Surströmming stinks, no doubt. After all, they are fish filets fermented in salty water. But the taste is sweeter than one can expect, and with proper side-dishes (potatoes, onions, garlic, butter, sauce mayonnaise, etc.) it's a joy to have. I was curious about it, and received many warnings from my girlfriend and friends. All Swedes, but not all fans of their own surströmmings. They were kind of surprised to see me react like a local having it for the first time : let's try, then we'll see. And it was just as expected : impossible to bear when opening the can (the neighbours had to be informed !), mandatory protection with a thick rag to avoid the oozing liquid... then so tasteful after letting things settle for a good 15 minutes. I event bought many cans to bring back to France, and my whole family (skeptical too) just enjoyed it the same way I did. You have been to China and Singapore (so did I), and I can testify some asian foods and dishes are WAY way worst than surströmmings. Don't you think ? Great video, as always. You are such a pleasure to listen to, to go along with, to watch. In my current times, you are a sunbeam !
@ptrana25182 жыл бұрын
Lexie did so well! Just google people trying surströmming and you will find so many people not just almost vomiting, but actually doing it, over and over and over. Although being Swedish I have never tried it either, but I plan to maybe this year in an effort to seek discomfort! Anyway, great video, so nice to see someone trying it properly with all the condiments and not just huge chunks straight out of the can.

THIS VIDEO IS AMAZING, FUNNY, CRAZY AND ALL THHE ABOVE! I HAVE WATCHED IT 3 TIMES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@matshjalmarsson30084 ай бұрын
As said, Surströmming really just tastes a bit salty, it tastes nothing like it smells. The taste is quite similar to Crayfish. But the smell is like a public bathroom where nobody has flushed the toilet for a month. However, you may experince a burn when you go to the bathroom the morning after. Traditionally milk is had with it, it takes away some of the saltiness, but nowadays it's usually beer and brännvin/vodka. I've had a number of parties eating surströmming, but the main thing there was to see how people who'd never tried it reacted. I have a friend who eats it on a weekly basis and consider it a delecacy, but for me it's OK, could taste a bit more fishy and less salty, but no problems.
