Swede here! I can confirm it's a very traditional thing here to combine savory meats and sides with sweet jams or even jelly. Based on the weather I'm guessing you've been done with Sweden for like 6 months now, but if you ever want to re-live that classic Swedish flavor combo, meatballs with black currant jelly and boiled potatoes (and optional gravy) is another certified classic.

Good job! As a Swede I'm obviously used to the sweetness lingonberry sauce bring to a meatball dish, but sometimes you can have the less sweet "rårörda lingon", where the berries haven't been cooked. It's a matter of taste, of course, but regular lingonberry sauce can definitely taste very sweet - especially when commercially made. I haven't really thought about it until now, but the most commonly used swedish name for it is "lingonsylt", where "sylt" translates to jam.

I’m intrigued about that lingonberry sauce. Those mashed potatoes looked pretty much perfect. You made quick work of it all and shocked the staff 😂 Great job again Beard! ❤
@valkrath11 ай бұрын
pretty sure you can find frozen lingon att like any ikea. the make a jam with them but it's supposed to be a bit sour not very sweet.
@JulieThomps8911 ай бұрын
@@valkrath I have one not too far from me. I’ll have to check. Thank you

@@valkrath Actually, even better, they usually have jars of prepared lingonberry jam at IKEA - lingonberry is almost like a slightly sweeter cranberry.
@martins399311 ай бұрын
The mashed potatoes and the creamy gravy can be very heavy and the lingonberries are supposed to be sour-sweet so it's a very nice contrast to the quite heavy food. Lots of lingonberry jam you buy from the store is a bit too sweet though so the effect goes away but if you make your own you can put just enough sugar in it to cut the worst acidity.

Ah you got the sweet lingonberry, we have three camps here in Sweden those that want the sweet one, the ones that want the sour version (lightly boiled with about a quarter of the sugar content and still have semi-whole berries in it) and those that can't stand it :D hope you enjoyed our weird little corner of the world.
@sarahjane490811 ай бұрын
The sour version sounds amazing. 😋 I’m in California so have only had the ikea version lol
@martins399311 ай бұрын
@@sarahjane4908 I think IKEA has frozen berries so you can make it yourself. Mix 1 part sugar and 5 parts frozen berries. For a more acidic version, hold back a bit on the sugar. Let them thaw together and stir occasionally. The sugar will dissolve and mix with the berries. No cooking required.
@House_of_Caine11 ай бұрын
In Finland the sour version is more popular, and those who don't like it know better to keep their mouths shut ;)

Don't let the restaurant fool you, there should be tons of gravy with swedish meatballs and mash! Lingonberries are essential but a little goes a long way.

Craving Swedish meatballs now. Damn! I actually really like the frozen balls I buy at the IKEA store, the gravy mix and the Lingonberries here in the Midwest/US.

So nice to see you here in Sweden! If you're going up to Stockholm at all, go visit a small town in the north west of Stockholm called "Bro". In the center of that town, there is a grill called "Bro grillen" which makes a food challange with 18 sausages in a roll with mashed potatoes and stuff. People from the whole world visit that place, I live here as well so if you need a guide, let me know! :D

I almost choked on my gummy bear when you said "have to turn the music down to see better" while driving. I do this all the time, I'm afraid it's directly related to aging! lol! Lingonberry with the meatballs is similar to having applesauce with pork. I love "sweet" combinations with meat. Great challenge, and I really like the decor of the place! I always wonder why you slow down when you're killing it timewise. You could have taken your last bite at the 8min30 mark.

I would say they definitely need to up the challenge by doubling everything, at least. Swedish meatballs were my grandmother's specialty and she always made WAY too much for family get-togethers (which we happily took home the extras from and used in our dinners and lunches for days to come).
@captainweekend527611 ай бұрын
Yeah, this is one of the only challenges I've seen on BMF that actually looks pretty easy to do, like I wouldn't even need to skip a meal or two to beat it, like it's not even that much larger than the largest helping you can get at ikea.
