As a physician, I agree with others that the hump may have a relationship with pcos, insulin resistance, and cortisol issues. That being said, I think if you Bea check in with your doc about getting some of these checked (or updated, I know you've had some investigation before) in addition to an X-ray of the spine and a check-up to rule out lipoma (which can be on the back but from your photos is unlikely). You seem to be doing many of the right things by your stretching exercises, weight loss efforts, and mindfulness of posture. I would just like to see you have an eval with your practitioner, or a trusted local chiropractor, or osteopath to give you a physical exam in addition to all the positive things you are doing! Great job with your intelligent and methodical approach sprinkled with your trademark humor. You definitely look improved Bea, best of luck!

Yes! I’m so glad you mentioned it, too! My 13 yr old daughter has a dowager hump and was recently diagnosed with PCOS. But after seeing how Cortisol levels can have similar symptoms, I’ve added magnesium and Inolsitol to her diet and 6 months later her hormones are leveling out. We have also been taking her to a chiropractor and exercising more.

Weight loss frankly is the least invasive thing to try. The hump will shrink and you get a better idea how big it actually is if its still there, and if its part of the spine or just fat distribution.

As a massage therapist, strengthening your back goes a long way towards fixing shoulder pain and those pesky humps! We can help you feel better in the moment and for a bit after but only stretching and strength training can bring you long lasting results. Good luck!!

Hey B. I am a medical student and by no means an actual doctor yet. The distribution of fat behind your neck is a symptom of too much cortisol. I don't know if you've already explored this path or if any of your doctors have talked to you about it but I'm just mentioning it so you know. I know you've mentioned you had PCOS in the past, all I know is that shit fucks with all of your hormones lol. Good luck on your journey, love your vibe and am rooting for you!

apologies in advance if speaking out of place,don’t usually comment. I am sure Beatrice has explored all the avenues in relation to her health but what about Cushings disease , very hard to diagnose, and quiet serious if left untreated, kinda ties in with over production of cortisol and the difficulty to loose weight and also the proportions in relation to weight gain. I was reading about this and was thinking to do the home cortisol test that’s why thought I’ll mention , will definitely steal all the exercise ideas ❤

Here's a tip I learned a while back that has helped a TON with tech neck! Sleep on your back without a pillow 1 or 2 times a week. It sucks and kinda hurts for the first couple of weeks but once you get used to it, it helps so much. I actually like sleeping without a pillow now, its pretty comfy and feels great on my neck!!

As a massage therapist, that is a huge change in one month! Keep it up, muscles like to do what you train them to do, so if you stop your body will go back to what it feels is "normal". On average, it usually takes about half the time since it was noticed, so I would expect it to take at least a year to go away completely. Best of luck! ❤

Adding sitting on a yoga ball intermittently while you work the same way you wanted to use the posture correctors could also help. It doesn't force you into perfect posture, but it's kinda hard to have absolutely horrible posture when you're trying to balance on a big ball. Helps me be more mindful of at least having lowkey *decent* posture instead of forcing me to keep it perfect, which feels more physically and mentally strenuous.

As someone that fidgets to focus, get a treadmill for under your desk. I got mine just to get steps and activity in because I have a super sedentary job. Great video Bea. A friend of mine had this issue and she went for a breat reduction and had fat removed from her upper back where her brah strap comes around and under her arms and her lower back in her upper hip area on her back. She FEELS INCREDIBLE. She doesn't suffer anymore from headaches, pain, dropping shoulders, she has cried over and over again about how she wished she would have done this years ago and not only does she feel so so much better but she also feels better wearing clothes and looks amazing and her posture is better for her in ways that help her stand up straight and walk better. She looks great and she is like a different person. Not hunched over in pain anymore. She used to say "I am not even living my life anymore, I don't enjoy anything because it hurts and im embarrassed to wear clothes and have people see mu hunch, and slouch and I cancel doing things with family and friends because it hurts and I move slowly ". Now im so happy for her. She is fully enjoying her life and has no regrets. Her insurance paid for a large portion of it because it affected her health. ( Many people are not aware of the fact that if you have something that affects your health on many levels, insurance will cover surgery, even plastic surgery, they just don't tell you that)I know that surgery isn't for everyone but, it can't hurt to look into it. Sorry for the long novel. Lol Love you Bea 🥰❤️ Have a Great Christmas and a Happy New Year 🥰❤️

I feel like most of these problems might be linked to one's weight and physical activity. I too have asthma and i used my inhaler on a daily basis. But ever since I started going to the gym, doing cardio and lifting weights everyday, my breathing problem subsided and the hump also started to get smaller. Its basically just fat so excercise and stretching are the only two options here (besides posture). Trust me working out will help 😊 you got this Bea❤

Great progress Bea; the hunch is much improved. Another really simple thing to try is: Stand tall with your arms down at your sides and simply rotate your palms outward as far as you can. Hold for about 20 seconds. It is a very subtle movement but I find it to be quite helpful. 🙂

for anyone struggling with this, its just basically overall daily posture, buy and neck and back brace, and do not sleep with any pillows and dont sleep on your side. sleep on your back, no pillow, place a small folded up sock, maybe 2 or 3 socks rolled up together, and place it at the height of the hump. its going to be challenging for awhile, but after time it will get easier. the hump forms slowly over time from constant bad posture, its going to take constant good posture over time

Hey girlfriend! You've inspired me so much to really start working on my hunch this year. For the last 5 years, I've avoided wearing my hair up at all costs due to my insecurity. Not to mention the pretty intense pain and tension headaches that come with it. Another thing is that I am on a bit of the leaner side. I bring this up because I think a lot of people think that it comes from being a little larger. It doesn't and anyone can have it. So when you said losing weight can help... maybe a little but that fat is there for the same reason the muscle is, your body stores also hardened fat there to support your neck.
@easilystartled2203
@easilystartled2203 7 ай бұрын
To everyone with the same hump, I've also been doing casual back strengthening to reduce my hump and overall back pain and something I suggest is doing lateral raises where you focus entirely on loading the weight into your lats - like you're pinching a pencil between the bottom corners of your shoulder blades and lifting from the muscles just behind your armpits, NOT with your arm strength. Start with NO WEIGHT and go SLOW (like as slow as your brain can tolerate) 8-10reps periodically throughout the day. Then, once that feels like you've wholly activated your lats and they are firing and becoming fatigued just from the weight of your arms, add 1-3lb weights into your hands. Then increase to 5lb. DON'T OVERLOAD just because it feels easy at first, make sure the right muscles are doing the lifting and go slow and steady. Keep light weights at your desk so as you take breaks or pause for water, you can do a quick round of shoulder and back activation for 1-4min. This, along with yoga and foam rolling, has completely changed my back and it just keeps getting stronger and my posture is SO MUCH BETTER with very little effort or conscious thought. And if you have tight chest muscles, consider massaging and stretching your chest throughout the week so that your shoulders will not be pulled forward so much from chest tension. Plus, it just feels good lol Best of luck and I hope you find relief from your pain

The engagement of the core is really key to good posture. I remember standing on a bus a few months after doing pilates and noticing I was engaging my core without realizing it. You really can train yourself to engage the core without much effort. I recommend practicing intentional nasal breathing during your stretches, yoga, and other workouts: fully inhaling in and out through the nose, making sure inhalations and exhalations last about the same, and engaging the core and pelvic floor as you do so. Go ahead and pretend to cough: *that* is the feeling in your abdomen and pelvic floor that you want to feel in your exhalations. I can't stress enough how important proper breathing is for good posture and to prevent injury when exercising. Wishing you the best always 💛

I wanted to add that one thing to consider is the ergonomics of your office chair to desk set up. That chair is very low and doesn’t have proper back support. If you could raise it slightly your elbows should rest naturally on top of the desk so your arms and wrist are flat on it. Right now you have to move forward and the elbows are below desk height. Someone else mentioned a standing desk and I can confirm they are amazing for posture and overall heath since it isn’t good for us to sit for too long at a time 🧡

I had swollen ankles for years and could not figure out a reason and water pills did not help. If your cells are unable to absorb insulin other things are also harder for the cell to absorb, insulin is only 1 hormone.

I meant to say this a few days ago...I haven't been able to finish the video yet because of Christmas and kids and crap. I'm finishing it now. I completely fixed mine my lifting and working on my back and shoulders, using proper form. I used something like the pink one you had on to assist me. Then I worked on my posture in my SLEEP. I noticed I leaned my neck forward while I slept. I made sure to keep my head aligned with my back instead of down (towards my chest).

There was a big reduction for just 21 days! It takes time for those tissues to break down after your body realizes, oh, I don't need this extra stuff here to help support me. I'm a massage therapist and I also had my own hunch and neck pain from spending my teens in depressed shrimp mode. Posture strengthening and massage helped it a ton, and then I actually ended up losing the last bit from chiropractic (tho I understand it's not everybody's cup of tea). Anyway all that to say this was inspiring to watch and you are doing all the right things.

I wouldnt recommend the foam rolling long term but do recommend more posture based exercises when you feel up to adding those in :) but like some have said it could be other reasons too! Hopefully it goes along easily with all your other work

Dont give up and definitely DO CONTINUE USING THE PISTURE CORRECTION BRACE! The linger you wear it on a day to day basis, the quicker your muscle memory will kick in and before you know it, you won't need it at all. Thats the beauty of muscle memory, your body will automatically move into that position without having to mentally remind yourself to do it. You are beautiful, and i could see a change, not only in your bump, but your entire body as you showed week 1 and 2. Tge small changes you've made are WORKING!!! Im so glad i stumbled across your channel, it was so awesome watching you. You have a brilliant sense of humour, i was in stitches with some (ok, most!) of what and how you said it!

I use a harness from Amazon that fits on kind of like a backpack. It loops around in front of each shoulder and pulls on you if you hunch over. It is uncomfortable to have that pressure on your shoulders so it encourages you to sit up straight. Helps build those muscles in the back. It does work. It’s called a Riptgear Posture Corrector. It only costs $17 dollars so might be worth a try. Looks like you found the posture correcting devices. Mine is super simple and doesn’t cover much of my back. I would sweat so much in the first one you tried on.

Thats a fantastic result for a couple of weeks! A couple of suggestions - 1) how about a standing desk with your monitor elevated slightly higher than eye level so hunching over is just not an option and 2) a little Kybella (an injection used to reduce double chins) for more obvious cosmetic improvement if that would make you feel more confident?

I am a massage therapist. I notice alot of people are giving you suggestions. I do know that I have helped people with this. If you can find a therapist who does myofascial release, or structural integration, you might see some good results. Fascia can build up in that area due to poor posture and genetics and add extra tissue creating the lump. You are on the right track with stretching out the poor posture and strengthening the weak muscles. Myofascial release therapeutically will help stretch out that lump, literally!

I had the hunch for years and for the most part with weight loss and this gadget called the Backpod has helped me tremendously. Also, if you take the green roller and turn it vertically to go with the length of your spine might work a little better. Thanks for sharing this with us.😊

I want to say we do see a big difference. Good job! Also, ever since I seen this video I have been more conscious of my neck leaning forward&hunching you brought so much awareness to me. I also think somewhere it says you have to squeeze the muscle in order for it to release tension, so good job you’re doing all the right things. Love the video keep going keep up the good work can’t wait to see the next one.

I have the same hump as you and the same health issues crazy enough. I used to work in a physical therapy office and spoke to one of the therapists about it. Weight loss, reducing stress, clean eating are a huge help along with the exercises and yoga you are already doing plus there are other maneuvers you can do too. Unfortunately, it is going to take much longer and alot of consistent work to get rid of it, but it is definitely possible! There really was a significant difference in the two pictures even if you couldn't see, we all could. Keep up the good work and stick with it, but be patient, it is going to take a while.

The results are striking! It really looks like it went down quite a bit, that's awesome! When you mentioned crocheting, it reminded me of the Valari gaming pillow. We got one for my brother-in-law for gaming and my mother-in-law for crocheting for Christmas this year. It's a pillow that you can wrap around your waist while you're sitting so you can rest your hands on it. It really helps with being able to sit back and rest your arms while you crochet. The other thing I might recommend is investing in an ergonomic office chair, or at the very least get yourself a keyboard tray and wireless keyboard and mouse. Working on your laptop directly at your desk isn't going to allow you sit back and keep your spine in proper alignment. Your arms should also be resting on armrests as close to 90 degrees as possible. If you can do an ergonomic set up for your desk I bet you'll see continued improvement. As someone who also has a hunch I really appreciate this video!

I go through phases of working on the hutch and others not caring. Thanks for the reminder to continue working on it and strengthening that area! I'd also recommend getting a laptop stand or monitor stand so you don't have to look down as much for work and instead look straight. That should also help your neck.

Draw a vertical line up your back and head. Your head has moved back a notable amount even though you still have a bump. Good job! Classical Pilates done properly can really improve your posture.

Can confirm the spinal degeneration/spinal issues part! I have had a dowager's hump for years and kind of ignored it, my posture got worse when i worked from home over covid and this year ended up having spinal surgery. Weight loss definitely helps with the appearance (at least it did for me), but posture and neck/shoulder and core strengthening exercises with a physio are also super important to ensure it actually improves on a structural level. Good luck!

Thanks for bringing this topic to the masses B! Posture is something we significantly undervalue as a society and have very little understanding of.. I’ve been studying my own personal biomechanics and correcting my posture for a couple years now and I’m still making adjustments. You’re literally moving bone and that’s takes time under tension, proper hydration, and lots of MFR. Plus our body is one system so when you pull on one thing, other things inevitably shift too.. It’s an ongoing process but totally possible and unbelievably rewarding. I hope you stick with it because it can be life changing (I know this from experience). Our bodies and behaviors are deeply connected 🤍

Thanks for the phrase ‘mindful posture’! As a massage therapist I’m always talking to people about standing/sitting up straight, if everyone did it every second of every day (which I know, is probably impossible) there would be so many fewer people with pain in their backs/necks/shoulders/hands! If you have any tactful words for telling people their core muscles are weak and that’s why their back/shoulders/neck hurts, I would love to hear. I’m always careful when I speak to people, I never want to make it sound like I’m blaming them for their pain!
