One of my painting teachers loved to say you should use a brush that almost feels too big for what you’re painting like what you did in areas where you blocked in the colors. And that was always such a challenge for me because I love tiny brushes and obsessing over details. Your pieces turned out absolutely lovely!
@caitlinoliviaartАй бұрын
Yes I have had the exact same problem in the past where I stick to my little brushes and over focus on detail! I had to buy these bigger brushes especially for this video😅 It took a little bit to get used to but they’re so much more fun to paint with. I like that motto that you should use a brush that’s almost feels too big- going to stick to that from now on ♡

It was so cool that you explored so much more beyond a master copy. I’ve been reading Rosa Bonheur’s biography and exploring her sketches and thought processes to understand how she approached animal art and it’s such an eye opening experience when you try to put yourself into the mind and life of an artist like that. And it does change how you think about your own art. Thanks for this fun video! I feel inspired to get into the studio! 🤗

I love Bonheur's work! Especially her horses. It's so fun hearing about how an artists life reflects in their work and I hardly scraped the surface! Glad you enjoyed the video ❤️

Thank you for your time, for sharing your ideas and what you learned visually so people like myself can benefit. I was struggling with how he does his paintings and I tried reading the books, watched videos of him but I still couldn't get it down. I'm more of a learner watching someone do it and then do the same beside them. Something that is difficult to find in real life but this video did it for me. I could see far more, pick up far more for me to confident try tomorrow. I even got my paints and canvas ready and room ready to try tomorrow. One of your most amazing work so far when it comes to applying the techniques of masters. I am very impressed with the proportions of everything - the face, the distance of eyes, nose, lips, the hair, and the dress because without these proportions to be spot on I'd not recognise who the person is you have painted except if I looked at the reference photo first. That there is one of the difficult things to do especially for me. The colours are vibrant. There is nothing muddy at all. It just pops out and blooms the more you look at the painting. Most of all, the way you delivered the whole video to us gives me confidence to do it tomorrow. At least I have a practical visual example to follow. So thanks!

I use two brushes in my oil paintings: medium flat brush and a medium round brush, sometimes a long thin brush for small details but really just cleaning up shapes gets you the same precision. Limiting your materials serious makes more creative and organic works. Same reason why I use the Zorn palette religiously for portraits.

I loved watching this. Whenever I am standing in front of a Sargent portrait, face is the last place I look at. Brushstrokes and values/color relationships everywhere else makes me look close and backup so many times I get exhausted. I loved watching you doing the clothes. Oh my gosh that's so cool, I'm glad you liked it! This is your sign!✨ One tip I would give is not to worry about mediums to start with. I feel like it complicated things more unnecessarily when I first started. I dont use any linseed oil or anything, it's not a must. Sticking with just paint thinner is simpler to start with! Thank you! And yes I can definitely do a video like that at some point! The canvas boards are actually stuck on with masking tape that I wrapped around itself to make it double sided. I'll leave a link to the masking tape since I highly recommend it - it's nice and strong but also rarely rips paper ♡ www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B09RJRDZGL/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
