I enjoyed trying to make Stardew Valley houses in ts4-- in such a way that preserved both the inside floorplan and the outside bits of the house. I had to be... creative. Esp since there are no* bathrooms in SDV maps. I'm not saying you should make SDV houses yourself... but if it wouldn't get you in trouble with copyright, I think buildings from media you enjoy could be a fun challenge. *initially I typoed that as "more". After watching a build/chat video from a while ago where you said something like "I've been putting neurotypical expectations on myself" something clicked. With houses with lots of windows, you get used to the "is someone watching me?" feeling. I actually used to get changed next to my window without closing the blinds because eventually I reasoned that nobody would look into the second floor windows, and if they were I'd look at them back, and (although nobody ever did look into my window) I garuntee there's nothing creepier than the person you're watching get changed watch you back as they do so.

the houses are made of wood because its faster to build. because we have so many natural disasters. also less likely to kill you in those natural disasters
@clsisman
@clsisman 3 жыл бұрын
I was interested in this so I looked it up: 1. America was built up incredibly fast so they needed to use cheap and nearby materials so wood was ideal. 2. Apparently a wood house with a brick basement is the best and safest for earthquakes because wood is flexible (less likely to get damaged in the first place) and easy to replace because it's everywhere and it's cheap. 3. I don't know if american people know this but UK building conventions and regulations, going back to jacobean era, means that a lot of our walls are fully 2 1/2 ft thick basically due to them having to withstand the damp that comes with our ridiculous rainfall levels. So where American houses have 1-inch outer wooden layer, a space, and then a very thin plasterboard layer, lots of english houses have a 9"-27" brick or stone outer layer, a space (sometimes filled with insulation), and then a wooden inner layer. My wifi only works in the room that it's in and the neighbouring rooms (the one next to it and the one above it) because it can't penetrate two walls.

I think houses are wood in America because it's the most plentiful and cheapest building material. I'm in the PNW and essentially live in a giant forest haha
@candystrobel1933
@candystrobel1933 3 жыл бұрын
...my house is brick.... And it's not like expensive or anything... like that house is prolly 2-4 times the cost of mines, it's 4 bed (small rooms tho) 2 bath with a inlaw sweet attached to the carport. (So like +1 bed and bath, totalling 5bed 3 bath.) I think it has more to do with when things were built, where, and what was "in style". Bricks may be more expensive than lumber.. but having hardi board siding is like 2.40/SF for expensive and brick is like 2.50/SF for cheap... You're gonna pay it again in like 10 years >.> It's like getting a shingle roof Vs a tin one.

@@bigsiskrishere yeah, time period + region probably determine which materials are most plentiful. I’m also from PNW but we’ve got a ton of brick builds here, especially from the early to mid-20th century since we had a huge brick industry in my corner of the state.
@Ray_Vun
@Ray_Vun 3 жыл бұрын
@@candystrobel1933 it was less the matter of price and more the matter of speed. the settlers in the east wanted to expand and populate towards the west as fast as possible, that means basically building whole towns overnight. wood was just chop, cut, attach. bricks and mortar take more time and effort to make, not to mention you also have to wait for the mortar to dry. brick houses just weren't time efficient and i guess it kinda stuck and they still use that method today
@lillian8067
@lillian8067 3 жыл бұрын
Midwest (Great Lakes) here, also in a heavily forested area. I think you're totally right about it being a regional thing. Most people's houses around here are wood with vinyl siding, or painted ladies (also wood lol). Wealthier people in my area have either brick-and-timber Tudors, or just, like, elaborate three-story lakeside log cabins. Our respective regions have somewhat similar weather patterns, too, so maybe that has something to do with it? Different materials doing better in certain climates? Now I want the entire history of architecture hahaha!

Houses are wooden in America because by the time of America's founding, Britain had used up most of its wood/cut down most of the forest cover, whereas America did not have that issue, as most of the trees the indigenous people had previously cut down had had the chance to regrow after the Spanish started bringing over diseases that decimated the native population. (and the houses that had been built in Britain in earlier eras that had used up the wood were dwindling over time from natural wear and other degradation)

Fun American architecture fact: there are a lot of different places in America, and many of them are built along earthquake faults. A brick-and-mortar house will shake apart and crush you in an earthquake, but a wood house will just sway a bunch and then settle back into shape. Don't know about the tornado precautions, though--I've only ever lived in the quake zone, never in the tornado zone.

houses in america, at least post full industrialization, are made as cheaply as possible en mass. my house, in an area that has a massive tornado season and in a town that has been ravaged by them in the past, has a brick exterior. however, it is made mostly out of drywall and hopes and prayers. it also has full round circuit wiring for *all the lights* which posed a problem when we had to replace the entire light fixture in my room because the electronics finally gave out after forty years, in connecting the new fixture it disconnected all the others after it (brothers and parents bedrooms), except occassional bursts of electricity would go through to my brothers' room and their lights would flicker. the plumbing is a nightmare. i live in a very rural area and most of the houses are like this and we can trace back who built them to one asshole who tried to do it as many times as possible with about four designs, flipping them to be mirrored on either side of the street. the only houses that aren't built like this were customs made before he could buy the plot of land. anyway, TL;DR: i live in a very tornado heavy zone in america and the houses are shit because of capitalism and greed.

This looks like it would be in a british cbbies show and it's where the main character lives whos a quirky woman in her 20's or 30's.

I think a good house that would do good with cottage living is the cottage from sleeping beauty.

American houses are built with whatever materials are available and affordable. Because wood is renewable and requires less heavy equipment to construct with it is the most common. With the size of the USA and Canada being what it is along with both the diversity of climate and culture across the countries you will find similar diversity in building materials and styles.

houses in america have been mainly made of wood because when they were settling and expanding west, they wanted a material that was super easy to get and build with, and so every house was just wood. not just bad for tornados but general element related issues, fire will just burn the whole thing down in the blink of an eye, water will damage the wood and make it rot which will eventually collapse the house, i don't think wooden pillars hold that well against earthquakes either. oh and there's also the issue of things like termites literally eating the things keeping your house standing
