I swore I'd never try trail running. I've spent years hating running without really giving it a real chance. In this video I spent a week trying to build up to a 10k trail run to see if trail running is something I could actually learn to love. This is my couch to 10k journey. Do I finally get bit by the running bug? Watch the video to see - I think the result will surprise you. 😉
Disclaimer: don't try going for 0 to 10k in just seven days. Spend weeks or even months building up to 6+ miles, it's better that way! I promise. Avoid injury, and have more fun.

The biggest lifehack ever about trailrunning, for me, was the fastpacking motto of "hiking the ups, jogging the flats, and running the downs." It flipped a switch in my brain, from thinking it's not running if you have to slow down to realizing that it all counts. You don't need to choose between beating yourself up physically and beating yourself up mentally -- you can go at a quick but comfortable pace, and as long as it's faster than you'd be going at a walk, it's running and it counts. And even if you have to walk parts, it still counts.

It's funny because I do the exact opposite. Due to knees that hate downhill running, I jog uphill, run the flats, and walk downhill, sometimes with poles, depending on the terrain. Works for me. Run your own run!

As a runner I would recommended two things. First, going from zero running to over a 10K in a week is a shock to the body. I recommend something like a Couch to 10K to build up endurance and reduce the risk of injury. Increasing mileage too much too fast is how people get stress fractures and other injuries. Second, I would recommend signing up for a trail race. The atmosphere of a race gives you additional energy. Keep running! :)

YES! Came here to say this. Zero to 10K+ in a week is for sure gonna cause strain and put undue stress on your body before it’s ready. Isn’t the general rule 10% increase in mileage each week?

Yep, this is the Start Running EXTREME version, lol! Most runners will tell you to start slow with walk/run intervals and ramp up your mileage no more than 10% a week. But that wouldn’t be as fun of a video! Miranda killed it anyway 💪🏻

Definitely way too fast for a beginner to start running, fitness gains from about a workout take about a week so your week leading up to the last trail run really only served to make you more tired and sore. This is why runners taper for weeks before a race. Beginners please do not follow this running plan!

To go from no miles to 6 miles is a huge jump. Work on jogging and walking and not increasing mileage more than 10% a week. I’ve finished the Leadville 100 mile trail run as well as Western States, and a ton of 50 mile and 100k races. Go slow and have fun, run your own race!

I do bring my inhaler with me just in case, and avoid running at a high intensity, I don’t do pace work because that triggers it. But my asthma is much less reactive than it used to be! I did start pretty easy with a couch 2 5k. Can’t recommend it enough!

I'm a trail runner. Even though you have a pretty beastly hiking base, a couch to 10k probably should have been a 6 week plan. Also, NEVER run your full week in new shoes. You're going to want to slip them into rotation for a mile or two here and there while you adjust the laces and give the sidewalls time to soften. Even if they're a known brand (or even the same shoe). I try to put about 50 miles on a shoe before I trust it.
@MirandaGoesOutside

This blew my mind. Totally makes sense!! I’ll never take a brand new pair of hiking shoes on a long backpacking trip without a few good day hikes first, so why would my running shoes be any different?!

And be careful with 0 drop shoes, especially if you’re used to shoes with a larger heel. Love my Altras and will never go back, but my coach makes people take minimum 3 months to switch to 0 drop for running, alternating between their previous shoes and 0 and slowly working up to full time.

@@MirandaGoesOutside Any ankle or front tendon pain I chalk up to lace pattern adjustments for a few weeks. If they're still bothering your lower leg, the roll off might not be working for your stride. Some shoes have a different rocker motion that can really come to bite you on the downhills.

Running tip for going downhill: use the downward slope to your advantage by lengthening your stride, like you’re stepping across a small ditch with each step, and just let yourself fall forward a little. This lets gravity carry you at least part of the way down so you reach the bottom slightly quicker with slightly less effort. No shame in slowing down if you need to, as the saying goes “you can run, you can walk, hell even if you trip and fall you’re still moving forward”

To everyone watching this as a runner myself, my advice is to start slow. Don’t overdo do it, like setting a timeline when you have a goal to overcome. It’s just a cardio exercise, meaning as you progress it’s your heart that will beat efficiently as you improve in your goal. What Miranda is doing is actually detrimental to her goal by setting a timeline, as the heart improve your exercise regimen will gradually improve as time goes by. Buy a heart monitor, keep a consistent rate, then as you improve, push yourself little by little to something that you’re happy with. I also cycle, jump rope and swim, to have variety in my regimen.

I have an issue where I don't really sweat much, but instead, my skin begins to itch and flleels more like a burning any time I get above 60⁰ even just sitting. I live down from Boise about an hour away and know a lot of those trails are hard on the feet. I'm looking for more ways to get active and lose some more weight. If you are having trouble regulating your body temperature you may have a health condition I would consult with a medical provider. Best of luck and much love!
@aatashiwadoremi
@aatashiwadoremi 18 сағат бұрын
I totally agree with the other person about consulting with a doctor! This is not medical advice, but as someone who also has poor body temperature control and lack of sweating, I finally found a several things that have been helpful: 1. Use a cooling towel. They are fairly cheap and you basically just soak the towel (with a special mesh design, usually) in cold water, then wring out the excess just enough so it won’t be dripping. I use this one all the time and it totally helps me actually get outside, even in warmer and hotter temperatures. 2. Intake *lots* of electrolytes. If you aren’t sweating, your body can’t regulate temperature. But you still need to replenish electrolytes, or else you’ll just pee out whatever you drink. I do really like LMNT (the drink Miranda is sponsored by in this video), but the main key for any electrolytes is more - more sodium than you think you need and actually a lot of potassium. Most electrolyte drinks focus solely on sodium, but your muscles will cramp if you don’t balance it with potassium. This is because your nerves throughout your whole body work with a delicate balance of sodium and potassium and if they don’t get enough potassium it can really start injuring your overall health. And magnesium is so important for muscles, which you also need working properly in order to regulate temperature well. More is also in the sense that you’re going to need more than you think you will since you’re being active and using up tons of resources. 3. Natural fiber clothing that is NOT cotton. Cotton holds onto moisture and loses its temperature regulating properties almost immediately. And as far as synthetic materials are concerned, it may claim to be moisture-wicking, but if there’s no moisture to wick, it’s like wearing a sheet of plastic and will just make you overheat. The best fabrics are ones that have either linen (which is a plant material) or a fiber that has cellulose, such as bamboo, viscose, rayon, lyocell, tencel, or modal. All of these are excellent materials to have. It’s okay if the fabric is like 70% natural fiber and the rest is nylon or spandex, but the more that is natural, the better. I’d definitely look at thrift stores because clothes are expensive. This also applies to your socks, but rather than bamboo or some cellulose fiber (do they even make socks with that?), I’d get wool socks. Wool has excellent moisture wicking and temperature regulating properties, but make sure it is reinforced with nylon because wool is fairly fragile on its own. My absolute favorites for summer are Darn Tough ultralight socks. They have the ultralight weight socks in hiking, running, active, and general day-to-day life, so you can use socks to support you for whatever activities you’ll encounter. They are pricey, but they’re also backed by a lifetime guarantee. So if you get holes in your socks, as you inevitably will, just send them to Darn Tough and they’ll replace them with brand new socks. It’s a really cool program. 4. Last, but not least, sun umbrellas. The best way to stay cool is to stay out of the sun, but if you have to go into the sun, umbrellas are excellent ways to give you shade anyway. It won’t fix the ambient temperature of the surround air, but it certainly helps me to feel at least a little bit cooler since the sun doesn’t actually hit me to heat me up. And they are good protection for your skin as well. UPF clothing is good, but an umbrella is even better. The kinds that have silver reflective material on the outside are even better because it helps reflect even more of the heat away from you, not just the UV rays. Alright, I know that’s a loooong message. But I feel like it’s all very important. If anything, I hope there’s at least one tiny thing that helps. Temperature regulation issues are no joke :( But hey, I’ve been slowly getting back into hiking, so I definitely get how difficult it is, especially during the summer! Good luck to you!!

I’m a trail runner and I follow your channel because I find it very entertaining. Congrats on giving this a go. Runnings not for everyone but what you did in 7 days is great. Imagine what you could do over the course of a year or more! Keep going!

My sister is a trail runner. One of her key pieces of advice on it (and most hobbies) is that you don't have to be the best at it. It's okay to be a beginner. You don't have to be perfect to enjoy an activity.

Loved the video, and congrats Miranda for taking on trail running! Being an avid trail runner, the three quick tips that helped me when I started many years ago are keep hydrated, dress in layers that can be easily shed or added, and most importantly if you want to walk then walk (especially uphill). Oh and always have a snack handy. All that being said it’s all about having fun, and looking at your smile at the end of that challenge, ya got it! 😊

I've been running for nine years! And sometimes it still sucks. Major kudos to you for giving it another try! I got into trail running about a year ago and I MUCH prefer it to street running.

mad respect for all trail runners. I hike all over Utah and The App Trl area where I live. Hiking can be rough when it rains and that is just walking. I can't imagine doing it while jogging along. I would slip and fall for sure.

Nice job! You have inspired me! I had been getting into trail running about 5 years ago and was sidelined by an unrelated injury. I have not taken the opportunity to try again. At 63 it is going to take some time to get back to where I was, but you reminded me of how much fun it is. It’s more like playing than running. Thank you for sharing.

I consider myself a runner and have always had a love/hate relationship with it. What you showed in this video is how so many of us feel while running so thank you!! And let’s be honest, trail running is a different beast from road running so in my mind you killed it!!

I used to do trail running on a regular basis and I need to be more active to get in better shape for it. Watching your journey literally made me cry and inspired me to truly get my butt in gear to get at it again! Also, I had no idea those vests existed! I tried a smaller camelback and belts to hold my water and energy goop but they were always so uncomfortable as I was never used to running with anything on me (except for my Walkman and the 3 CDs I'd switch up when I was in middle school 😅). I cannot wait to see how far you come, I'm so proud of you for taking this on, Miranda!

You are a machine! Great Job! Watching this brought back so many memories. I went from running to an accident where I broke my back and could never run again. I started backpacking and hiking because at least I could walk (such a blessing). Watching brought back so many good memories, thank you for sharing your adventure. You are a rockstar ⭐️

Running has always been something that I struggled to enjoy because it always caused me so much pain. I tried mountain biking and it was a game changer - I can enjoy my love for the outdoors and not suffer from joint pain or headaches. If you can get past the first week of being a bit saddlesore it all becomes worth it. Love your videos! You're a trooper.

First, CONGRATS! What an amazing accomplishment and welcome to the dark side of running 😈 . You captured the joy, pain, and suffer of trail running so well. Also, you went from no running to no small amount of miles very quickly. Increasing mileage more gradually will allow your body to adapt. Finally, don't be afraid to walk the hills! It's my favorite part of trail running. Happy miles! ❤

15:19 the key to running is listen to your body. Also focusing on distance is often a mistake that new runners make. Runners need to run by feeling and for time lengths, rather than distance. Another key is to build up slowly (not more of an increase of 10% per week, and for no more than three consecutive weeks of gain before backing off and doing a rest week). Using a heart rate monitor is also a good way of measuring effort, for new runners who can’t gauge effort very well.
