Fun fact: Nowadays, a lump of coal seems like a cruddy gift, but in Victorian times, it was actually still a kind gift. Coal burns longer than firewood, helping keep the child's home that much warmer. It's definitely more of a charity gift than toys would be, but it's a very practical gift when all you have to heat your home is firewood or coal for fuel, in an era long before natural gas, furnace oil, or electricity. (Kind of like socks; you don't appreciate them nearly as much when you're young as when you get older.)

Tip if you're having trouble finding "Ask for Presents". That usually means the Neighborhood Stories has moved Father Winter onto a lot, so go into Manage Worlds, find Clement Frost, and kick him out of wherever he moved into. Then, go into the Neighborhood Story setting for Clement Frost deselect the "Move into Lot" option so it won't happen again, (I personally deselect everything). You will have to do this every new save file.
