That's fantastic for Vietnam! If you were wondering about the "no balloons" sign, it's because of the overhead wires (catenary) to power the trains. Loose balloons can make contact with the wires and cause catastrophic disruptions. And if the leach is long enough, arching can happen between the wires and the person holding the balloon. It's a big no-no and signs are usually only seen in train and metro stations near theme park or hyper touristic locations. Most times it's the stations' personnel who spot and stop people with balloons from entering platforms. As for the ambient noise, it seems like Japanese companies don't really account for cultural differences when they export their infrastructure and technologies. Anyway, that's really a great new transport system in Vietnam. Greetings from Paris.

Just wait until more lines of the metro are complete. When the city rains and all the metro lines are operating you will truly see the benefits of having a metro system. If a group of friends want to party but dont want to drive drunk, take the metro.
@kershekfamily2 күн бұрын
That will be true once the system is fully built out. As it stands now, unless you live within a couple blocks of the metro line, you would need to take a taxi/Grab from your house to the station and then likely another from the station to the location you actually want to go. All this could be avoided once more lines are added and/or the city reclaims, clears, and repairs the sidewalks to allow easier walking to the metro stations.
@blipblop922 күн бұрын
metro only works if they manage to get all those lines built, otherwise it becomes obsolete and wont reach critical mass.

It was a fun experience to use it. It's really great to connect D1 and Thao Dien. The Ba Son stop is a bit curious with the completely dead rich ghetto and the empty space in front of the canal. Not sure how they will develop this area as it is ultra boring and overpriced there. I stopped at Thu Duc station to discover new places. But it was in the middle of nowhere on a motorway which I found surprising. It is a bit disorganized at the moment but hopefully it will get better in the future. Not sure it will take off many motorbikes from the road, the metro is not very large and it can get crowded quickly. And the metro stops in many strange areas so the motorbike will still be needed in many cases. For me, the big winner are the people living in D2, and in D9, the few who are not too far away from the motorway.

If our experience in Taipei is any guide, the metro will do a lot to improve public transportation in Vietnamese cities. However, the key is that there must be many lines and the lines must be integrated very well. Moreover, the bus stops must also be integrated with the metro stops. In another word, metro passengers exiting a metro stop shouldn't need to walk ten minutes, especially in the SE Asian humidity, to get to the closest bus stop. Lastly, there must be many trains running on each line, especially during commuting hours. People will not use the metro if they have to wait for one train every 15 minutes. In Taipei, during peak hours, there is one train entering every metro stop every one minute and half. This is why those of us living in Taipei don't bother checking the train schedule when taking the metro. When I lived in the Bay area, I had to check the BART train schedule, which didn't really help because the BART trains were late often. If Vietnam's metro system can accomplish what I said above, the metro will change the city for the better.

The metro build out should be a never ending project - the Japan rail and subway systems were not built in a day and neither will the Vietnam metro systems. With the city continually expanding, planners need to have subways and elevated rail linking everything together as the city was not built with high car traffic in mind. Unless the city reclaims a huge amount of real estate for parking ramps in the urban core, there is no other option but to build an efficient public transit system.

Due to its long awaited arrival, I assume most of the ridership now is just for the experience of riding it vs. using it for actually commuting. I am crossing my fingers for high sustained numbers to help with the traffic congestion and encourage the planners to speed up adding new lines.

It appears that the depot is built for additional trainsets. 17 trains, 14 operational, 2 spares and 1 maintenance is underutilized for that system at the moment. The service tracks at the depot appear to have room for 30 trains.

@@duongglobalbusinessconsultingwell, 100 years old Metro in NYC vs a brand new being used for the first time. Yeah, it is ridiculous to compare the cleanliness between the two. But Japan Metro line is a different story. It’s older but spotless..
@duongglobalbusinessconsultingКүн бұрын
It’s not ridiculous at all, Jenny. Knowing NYC, within just a few days, it would likely see graffiti, litter, or other signs of wear, it’s a reflection of different urban cultures and enforcement priorities. The fact that the HCMC Metro is spotless on its opening days speaks volumes about the pride and respect locals have for this new development. The question is whether this level of cleanliness can be maintained long-term. Japan’s metros prove it’s possible with consistent maintenance and cultural values that prioritize public spaces. So, while comparisons to NYC might seem harsh but valid, they highlight the importance of not just building infrastructure but taking care of it. Let’s hope HCMC can set a strong example going forward!
