I compared Strathmore papers and Arches watercolor papers for drawing and also gave you some useful tips on graphite pencil drawing techniques. I've used graphite pencils on watercolour paper and it turned out great. The texture helps with the shading very smoothly and blends perfectly

Great video. I am working on a graphite portrait on watercolor paper right now. This was very useful. Also, I have found that a white gel pen will go over graphite, but you have to move the pen very slowly. Or you can spray it with workable fixative, then go over it with the pen.

Thank you for this excellent post on papers! I have been struggling with papers as I learn. I just bought Bristol Vellum to try and thw class I am taking is recommending Hot Press, but I didn't like the look for my purposes (cars, airplanes). After seeing this, I am sticking with the Bristol Vellum to start!

Great review I always use watercolour paper with graphite, originally Fabriano Artistico until they changed the surface, now use St Cuthbert's Saunders Waterford HP relatively smooth surface find it accepts dark tone very well.😊

Please, how was the older Fabriano Artistico surface? Did it have that diagonal grain stracture mine has? How can someone say, one from the other? (older vs new I mean) Thanks in advance

@@greekveteran2715 The original had a grain texture the newer has a more patend woven texture the change was mad a few years ago. As I understand it Fabriano make the paper for the euro note and they brought the manufacturing process in line with that to make things easier

@@JamieBoots Thanks! I didn't know that! Mine has a diagonal smooth texture, that you don't notice until you look closely. I use the back side for graphite drawings and sketches. I use the front side for colored pencil drawings (Polychromos), when I need that extra deeper tooth, that can provide more layers. The other 2 papers I like, are the Daler Rowney Heavyweight (both Smooth and Fine grain). Thanks again for the response and the info!!!

I have an endless supply of professional paper, I use watercolor paper exclusively, but I use the "wrong side" of arches paper or other hot press paper, give it a shot! I think the reverse side is alot better....

Interesting, what do you find different about the reverse side? Do you have any experience drawing portraits on this paper?
