Faber Castell has claimed to produce the world's first matt graphite pencils. The biggest problem with using graphite pencils for your drawings is how much shine the pencils have, which can stop your pencil drawings from looking realistic. Matte graphite pencils? No shine? That sounds too good to be true. Let's review the Pitt matte graphite pencils from Faber Castell to see if they actually work.

You guys mention carbon pencils (such as the Wolf pencil) as a comparison to these “new pencils”. Carbon pencils are very useful, but I don’t see them as a substitute for graphite. They have a very different feeling while drawing. Also, graphite pencils are much easier to erase than carbon. I haven’t tried these “new pencils” but it sounds like to me the that these are just carbon pencils being marketed as something new. Am I wrong?

@@anthropomorphicpeanut6160 don't worry, you didn't come off that way.. to me anyway :) I think everyone knows its takes loads of practice to get to that level 0f amazing for sure!! I do think some pick it up a bit faster then others... but it can be mindset too, telling ourselves we're not good enough. I did that my whole life, telling or being told I couldn't possibly be capable of a lot of things, so you assume, as a child, they must be correct. But in my mid, maybe early-ish 40's i hit a bad spot with some big stuff and knew more meds or any meds was not going to fix them amd that I desperately needed an outlet. Art had always been something I loved and had many in extended family, but never felt good enough. But, this particular moment, it felt like the biggest need to draw or paint that I've ever felt. So, started small, like super easy, looked at a drawing of very very simple, and very forgiving, poppies :) I knew thinking about it as a whole made it feel overwhelming to me, so I had to make myself just try a petal, and another and another, without comparing, just getting those simple bits down... and I was honestly shocked when it looked even remotely recognizable as a poppy. Then I tried shading, which I knew nothing about, just knew where I thought they'd naturally go, and I realized the shading is one of my favorite things to do!!! Even when a drawing feels blah at first, shading makes things come alive in a way I'd just not known before doing it. Then I was hooked...it wasn't great, and I'm still nothing great, and with my severe health issues I am not able to practice as much as I'd like... but, it's still something I find SO much pleasure in. I wish I had begun early in my life, but, I didn't, and thats ok :) now I love trying all types of things, just because I love it all and it helps my mind tremendously :) so, as was brought out, its never too late to start learning. I've never had classes, can't afford them...but there are SO many amazing artists on here that are so generous with sharing their work that on my days when I can't sand or even use my hands, more often then not now, but, I love being able to watch gorgeous art being made right in front of my eyes and always learning things along the way to try when I'm able amd of course being super inspired, which helps to keep my mind focused in front of me and on positive things :) You'd be surprised what you can do when you're not worried about how it turns out, just that you're doing it. If you want to, and not everyone wants to spend loads of time learning as their deeper passion lays elsewhere, which is great too! But, you didn't say anything wrong at all :) I just thought you were appreciating this gorgeous work of art!! I'm sure, with my physical issues, I won't ever be this good... but that's ok, I love the effort and focus it takes for me to just do the simple things I can do, so, as along as it brings me joy, I'm cool with that :)

Terrific demonstration of this medium! Representational (realist) artists have been very excited about this product, for the exact reasons you mentioned- the shine of an embossed, dark graphite passage can really distract from the image if it's too pronounced. The manufacturer information about these pencils indicates that the core material is a combination of clay and graphite. We think that likely disrupts the typical, pure graphite surface. Graphite particles are flat plates that lay down like roof slates or a spread deck of playing cards; producing the characteristic, silvery shine when graphite pencil tones are applied with force. Kaolin (clay) also has a flat shape, but we think the combination (possibly with a binding agent) prevents the formation of a shiny, embossed surface. Very nice! In the last century, when hand lettering was a skill more commonly practiced, artists learned to employ techniques for laying down deep, dark tones without excessively polishing the paper. Some called it "noodling" or "squiggles" because they employed randomized spiral marks when filling areas with a deep tone. Others simply avoided graphite altogether, in favor of carbon pencils, whose amorphous carbon pigment produced a naturally shine-free surface, albeit without the subtle gradations of tone that only graphite can offer.

I have these and I love them. They really do make a difference. Not perfect, but pretty impressive I think. :) Thanks for the video. What I found is that if I very lightly go over the areas that I colored in with the 14B with a lower number (say, the 10B) it will knock back the small amount of reflection even more, without 'lightening' the area. Now remember - it needs to be a LIGHT layer over it. But for me, that pretty much took care of any reflection I had from those darkest areas. Just a thought . . .

What kind of paper are you using? The paper can make a difference in the tones. As for me, my favorite paper to use for graphite is either Arches hot press watercolor paper (holds graphite well and the paper holds up well to layering) or Stonehenge polar white paper (very white in color which leads to some good contrast).

It literally stops the shine fading and the paper from turning yellow and or brown. It can also be used on multiple art mediums, like clay both oven baked and air dry. I used it on my sculptures too. I matte varnish can get rid of the shine problems and protect the drawing. I wonder how water soluble these are? Would a varnish lift them at all? Would water make them run?

Hi Kirsty, I opine: on Amazon, they sell with Faber Castell 9000 which appear to be matt as well but I found them at a lower price online from Jacksons art shop London, they go to very soft. So got both. Thanks for posting about them, Regards JB

It would be interesting to do tests on some different papers to see if that effects the finish.

Various grades of smooth vellum (sometimes called onionskin) would be amazing. I adore that paper with pencil.

Not sure Faber Castell are the first to do this seeing as Staedtler already has a Matte pencil called Mars Lumograph Black 🤔 Albeit, not in as many tones, but it's been done. Also, you can get rid of graphite shine but just sealing your finished work with a matte fixative 👌 Overall these do look like a great set of pencils to work with and your drawing looks phenomenal!! Well done! 💯 👏 Thanks for sharing!

I don't think Faber Castell makes leads. I've never seen them, but I've not gone looking, so I might be wrong.

@@marenjones6665 I have their "regular" graphite leads and clutch pencils. If not yet, I hope they're planning to release matte leads in the future.

The issues with blending you mentioned halfway through is not the pencils, it's the paper. I can't imagine using watercolor paper with graphite. I'm shocked it came out as good as it did, despite the paper.

I bought these and tried them. I find that they are a bit streaky when applied, and do shine when blended or burnished. They also seem harder than usual B pencils with an almost charcoal feel, and do not blend quite as well.

Thank you for testing, Kirsty! I just recognized that the price for that pencils is much higher than if you buy them directly in Germany (about 25% ). I didn't try them myself, but I'll think, I'll order them soon, too.

You are very talented. I just wanted to talk about the numbers on pencils. The number / letter rating is not darkness or lightness, but the hardness of the pencil. HB, most common here in Canada for school work, is balanced, centre of the options. The higher the number before the H indicates hardness; so 2H is harder than HB, but not as hard as 6H. Opposite that, the higher the B number the softer the pencil. So 2B is softer than HB, and harder than 6B. That 14B is quite soft. Harder pencil for lines and details, and the softer B pencils for blending and shading. Love the find of a pencil that removes the shine, that is a revolution! Your perfect work will be so amazing with these! Great find, thanks for sharing!

Nice !! I use regular Faber Castell 2h through 8b regular pencils for all my graphite work, and the dark ones do leave a good bit of shine, I spray it with a matte sealer but it can make the drawing look printed or unnaturally flat. I may have to try these in the future
