Very interesting! I love that you're always bringing a history lesson and are willing to try new (old) practices. When I looked up the information it appears that it was "Gravy Browning Liquid" (a liquid food coloring) not actual gravy. Also they would use paint brush, cotton balls, leaves of grass, to name a few items to create patterns on their legs to mimic stockings. And then, of course, they painted a line up the back of their legs. Thank-you! What fun...

Thank you so much for watching! I'm glad you enjoyed the video. 😊 Wow, how interesting- I thought gravy browning was just gravy but it being a food colouring would make so much more sense! Apparently it's rarely used nowadays... such a shame for I could have had another go at the stockings if there was any available! Thanks for your comment ♥

@@MelinaMeineke Here in the U.S.A. there are companies that still produce and sell "browning sauce" for gravy in the typical grocery stores (it's not just food coloring) it's a liquid in bottles ... ask around, I think you'll find it
@OhayMikotoАй бұрын
@MelinaMeineke Maybe it would have worked better if you used a sponge instead for even coverage but I think that gravy was way to thick for application on legs

I just found your channel and notice you post vids but like an 80s difference so whatever it is now it is 80 years back which is amazing. I absolutely love your content especially that “girls getting ready to see Frank Sinatra in 1944” I hope you never stop making this type of content I love the 40s and I’m glad you don’t go outside like the 1950s I’ve seen some 20s and 30s but yeah. Great channel love the vids keep going and don’t stop the theme

Thank you for your comment, you're too kind. I'm glad you noticed the 80 year difference between the setting of my videos and the current year! And I'm pleased you like the videos too. There is definitely more to come! All the best 😊

You did a nice demonstration how women tried to look like ladies during Wartime rationing. I was always heartened by their wholesomeness. And felt they used an oil-based kind of gravy or cream that didn't dry and always looked nice. Maybe a vintage product still available on eBay? Hope this helps!
@MelinaMeineke8 ай бұрын
Thank you very much for watching! I, too, never cease to be impressed by all the creative ways ladies made do back then. Yes, indeed- I'm sure that gravy during wartime must have had a different consistency and a far better look than the one I used... and another commenter mentioned that they likely used gravy browning, which was more of a food colouring- which makes a lot more sense! 😊

Oh my...! I truly admire the women who lived during war time and made do with very little. I'd be interested to see how tea would work as a substitute for stockings. Thank you for an interesting (and slightly gross 😂) video!

Thank you for watching, Jane! Yes indeed, the way ladies during war time got so creative to make do is both impressive and inspiring. I'm forever in awe of their ingenuity. And oh my, I'm so tempted to try tea stockings... maybe in a future video if I'm brave enough! 😊

Wow, true vintage liquid stockings from the '40s or a modern equivalent? I looked online and couldn't find any vintage ones (just one bottle on Ebay for two hundred bucks)! Thank you for watching ❤

@@MelinaMeineke - I don't know how authentic the formula is, but it's certainly better than using gravy! :)

When I was researching it said gravy browning which is what changes the colour of gravy. Not sure if it's actual gravy you use.

Yes, that's absolutely true! A lot of people pointed this out in the comments. My source for this video was incorrect. I don't think anyone used actual gravy!

Haha, so hilarious! That turned out very funny, I wondered myself how they did that. Perhaps real gravy from meat?

Thank you for watching! I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Perhaps it was meat gravy they used. Yuck! That's too far even for me! Ha ha.

Ugh, what a mess! I'm sure some family members had quite a chuckle when ladies tried to do this themselves in the 1940s. And gave a scolding for wasting perfectly good gravy! All in the name of beauty, though, am I right? 😁

The real question was: how do you keep Ice off of your legs? Also, I went to the Max Factor museum in LA. You would have gone insane. They had a dress that belonged to Lana Turner…

A lot of saying "NO!" in a warning tone.... she is a very good girl so she got the message (though she did try to lick the saucepan with the gravy)... ha ha! I wonder what the commercially sold version actually looked like. It must have been terrible because otherwise they'd still be around. But surely it couldn't be that terrible. Right?
@MelinaMeineke8 ай бұрын
The commercial liquid stockings were apparently quite convincing. Or at least convincing enough. A hassle, absolutely, and nowhere near as convenient as the real deal- so naturally when real nylons returned after the war they were the preferred option! 😊
