I believe that the Top Coat created that weird skin on the balls. I noticed when i paint my nails and the nailpolish goes off that its usually not crackly, but rather elastic, maybe cause it didn't dry long enough. So i guess the top coat might have mixed with the paint, but because it dried, the questionable liquid didn't adhere to it as good as it would have on just the paint.

It’s possible that the top coat is elastic-y on purpose, might make it last longer than one that was brittle. Might need to use a cheap top coat to make this work?

Regarding “nicer” top coats, when I eventually pick off…I mean, when I eventually properly remove my polish, the top coat does seem somewhat to add a thick almost jelly-like flexible layer. Good idea to see how a cheaper top coat impacts the final results. Additionally, what about trying a not top coat polish? A non-top coat polish could very likely dry with a more brittle consistency, as it’s not intended to be durable by itself (make sure you aren’t getting an “all-in-one” formula, but rather one that directs you to finish with a top coat). If someone wanted to get deep into this experiment, I’d be curious to know how a nail acrylic product would work with this. Specifically, using the acrylic powder plus liquid monomer products, applied as a coating in a very thin layer. It dries within seconds, would only need one layer, and I don’t see why it would NOT give a great crunch with cracking, not smushing. Acrylic is not a product for kids to use - much like resin - however it’s fairly inexpensive, accessible, and can be purchased/mixed/filed really smooth/decorated - lots of ways to make it look fun and pretty (if desired).

hey jackie! just to let you know, there is a type of clay cracking called “plaster clay cracking” where you substitute nail polish with plaster! using plaster would give it a more satisfactory crunch without any of the fumes. if you do decide to try it, please be cautious because the sharp edges could potentially cut you.

My son uses a spray clear shelaq coat from the hardware store. He sprays it 4 or 5 times. It actually dries to a non tacky finish in about 5min if set outside on a hot day so each squidgy only takes 30 min or less to make. He also inserts a toothpick before paint and spraying so when ready he uses laundry clips to hang them from a string then he sprays and on the last coat he removes the toothpick then the last spray sells the hole and the whole thing is crunchy. I would like to add he is a total craft hacker then looks at me like I'm an alien when I ask him if he picked up the dog 💩poop. Yes son, those adorable furry lovey dogs 💩poop and we have a scooper. 😆🤣😂

The amusement you got from the rubber chicken was so wholesome x3 there are people who use those for song covers and are actually really well done. I'd recommend the ones for FFXIV in particular. That sealant I'm 99% sure is nail polish top coat or clear polish itself, it's what most people use and it's cheap...and in crafting is a good substitute for super glue as well. Different brands come in different thicknesses due to the formulas being different. The paint is meant to act as a barrier since the polish won't work the same way if directly put on the clay.

You should try painting it with nail polish or using plaster for the outside. I've discovered those 2 things give the best cracking experience

@@shannonmackenroth4011 yes, but she used a top coat rather than base coat polish. I guess there is a difference. Base is harder and top is more elastic. At least that's what someone else said in the comments. There are different formulas used for various types of polish.

Ooooooo yes, Ouzo is very anise flavor forward and most definitely could. Ouzo is anise flavored. Licorice and anise have a similar taste and fragrance, but they have their own identities beyond that. Licorice is a root (from the licorice plant), and anise is a fruit (from the anise herb plant). Anise is not related to licorice at all. BUT if we're just going by smell Anise and licorice have a similar flavor and smell, but they do have differences in taste. Anise tends to be spicy and a little sweet. Licorice, on the other hand, can be bitter, salty, and even sour. They smell similarly because they both have anethole, which is an organic flavoring compound. But thanks for your input, it was just a joke after all 😁

I've tried clay cracking with just the top coat before (using the same top coat, funny enough) and got the same peely result with really no cracking sounds. I put like 8 or more coats on it too. Really, I think the better way to go is whatever that cracking stuff is

Jackie you need to go to any pet store that sells those chickens, I know Walmart does. What you will love is squishing them all at once in the display box. It's the best. There is also pigs that make close to the same sound. I get a tub of that clay at Michael's. It's called foam clay. I love it for making all my little turtle magnets.
