If you want deeper more vibrant colors you just put LESS WATER in with the dye OR add more dye to the water. You can purchase the powdered dye and make the colors as light or deep/vibrant as you want. ALSO...the length of time you allow the items to sit before rinsing them also affects depth/vibrancy. So while the kit said 6-8hrs that’s really the minimum time. When I wanted really deep dark colors I would often leave the item for 3-4 days before rinsing. The longer time allows the dyes to really bind to the fabric. Sometimes after 24-36hrs I would take all the rubber bands or string off and allow the item to lay flat for another 24-48hrs. Which allows it to dry fully. If you try this again I would suggest purchasing a lot of the powdered dyes so that not only can you get the deep vibrant colors you wanted but also so you could properly try the various Japanese techniques as most ask you to dunk the fabric into a container of dye & water. Which I would LOVE to see you try those Japanese techniques properly as they look amazing. If you do decide to try them for a video make sure to get some very thin nearly see through material to make tapestries like you showed in this video. Which are intended to be put in front of widows or other light source for a stained glass type of effect. I think those are absolutely beautiful!! I loved how the items you did in this video turned out!! FAR better than my first solo attempt a tie dying that’s for sure!😂😂

Rogue Wolf wow this was so comprehensive! I have a bunch of tie dye just waiting for me to have enough time on a weekend to do it. I’m gonna refer back to some of your tips! I always let them sit 2-3 days bc I’ll forget to rinse them right away & they’re always vibrant (except when we watered down the dyes because the liquid still seemed super vibrant and we wanted more pastel colors anyways -it worked but they were definitely fainter)

I have a little tip because I did mine at a camp. After wrapping in cling wrap I stuck mine in my car which gets hot during the day. Dye + heat is usually a good thing ime, just so it doesn't dry out.

its acceptable to use wikipedia as a start to getting general research and an idea of your topic. still cant cite wikipedia, but wikipedia HAS SOuRCES CITED at the bottom, and those sources are usually credible since wikipedia got their info from those sources (doesnt mean they necessarily help or relate to your topic, but those are actual (better) sources)

The longer you let them sit with the dye in the more they obsorb so they’re more vibrant ; I forgot about a shirt I tie died once so I ended up washing it a week later and none of the color faded. Also I think the more water you put in the lighter the colors turned out, I think I’m not positive about the second one. :3 that’s all.

@roguewolf7053
@roguewolf7053 4 жыл бұрын
You are correct on both things. The less water you add the stronger the dye will be and the longer you let it sit before rinsing the more of the color will remain. This kit is more aimed towards kids having a tie dye party and the instructions saying u only have to wait 6-8hrs before rinsing(which is the absolute minimum) is also aimed at fitting into a party like a sleep over or summer camp. The brand & dyes are good but just have to tweak the basic instructions. But a great kit for a beginner for sure.

Part of the reason you let it sit for 24 hours is so the dye has a chance to REALLY set in I did some sheets and let them set WAY longer (like 3 days) because I forgot about them and they bearly faded at all and the first blue you used could have been a denim indigo blue which will fade a bit after its washed

After the several hour wait, I undo them and let them air dry, then I put in the dryer on the hottest setting. Then I do the rinse etc. Drying before rinsing sets the color. For items, you can't put in the dryer set in the sun or maybe UV light.

For future reference, I've tried this technique and while it does help keep the colors vibrant I've had issues with bleeding in later washes. The vinegar bath method solves that while still keeping colors vibrant.

Moriah is right you only have close to a hour to use the dye. Yes, the kits says 3 days but the dye becomes less potent. Let it sit long too.
@SnowFox102
@SnowFox102 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah those labels are a bit misleading. It varies with the type/quality of dye and what material you're using it on, and they do still work it's just that sometimes it won't bind as well. I use acid dye for wool and I've mixed dry all-purpose dye with water and stored and used it for months no problem, because acid dye doesn't matter so much. Fiber reactive dye seems a little more picky though, I tried to tie dye some cotton things a while back and the stored all-purpose dye didn't work as well on them as they did on wool.
@FaeoreNeko
@FaeoreNeko 3 жыл бұрын
It's because they mix the fixative (soda ash) into the colour powder. But the soda ash kills the dye potency as soon as you add water. For best results, one should buy quality dye and seperately mix soda ash (soda carbonate, buy it cheap in your supermarket detergent aisle) in water to presoak.

Like others have said - the longer you leave it the better! I love tie-dye and use the Tulip kits as well, and my colors usually come out very vibrant. But you definitely need to leave them for *at least* 24 hours. Also, it depends on how wet your shirts are when you dye them - the more water that is introduced into the fabric, the softer your colors will be because they simply get washed out. You basically only want them just a little bit damp, not soaking.

As someone who did tie-dye for nearly every summer at summer camp as a child, it's fun to watch someone try to figure out how to do it. It kinda blows my mind though to think that people haven't done it before since it was such an integral part of my childhood. I've never done it with ice cubes before though! That's super interesting!

Vinegar can help. But not diluting the dyes so much & allowing the items to set longer before rinsing (as in days not hours) will also make the colors more deep & vibrant. The more water you add to the dye the lighter the end result will be and the less time you wait before rinsing the lighter & more faded the colors will appear. 6-8hrs is really the minimum time needed to get anything besides pastel fades of color. Which can be really pretty if that’s the result you want. But if you want deep, vibrant, solid colors you need less diluted dyes & to wait days to even weeks before rinsing.

Vinegar usually sets it. I only did the tie dye kit as a kid where the dye was in the string and then you dunked it in hot vinegar water. Stayed bright for ten years before I outgrew the shirt. I think the kit you did was neat though. Will have to try it once I'm done my slimes mixing experiments. I bake from my heart so you can imagine what measurements look like with me.....but it does teach you how to save slimes. Love how much money you saved me with your kit reviews!

@NerdECrafter If you want really deep vibrant colors you need to do two things. One is to dilute the dyes less than those instructions say. And two...leave the dyed items to sit for up to several days as that allows the dyes to set in the fabric more before rinsing. The 6-8hr wait time the kit suggested in the absolute bare minimum required. So the longer you let it set the darker & more vibrant the end result will be. 💕

Tie dye is so fun! My brother and I have done at least one tie dye session per summer for the past few years. My personal favorite method to use is either bullseye or crumble. I have a tie dye hoodie that is my absolute favorite clothing items, it has an angled bullseye design going out from the shoulder and is rainbow colored. The key is to use a lot of dye, it might take a lot more than you think it will. I would highly recommend trying to tie dye yourself if you never have before.

ice tyedye: the colors "break." lol some dyes use only one color molecule, like primaries. but some colors like green or purple, have 2 molecules. so yeah, that teal blue probably had green molecules mixed with the blue molecules. I like watching Chemknits videos because she dyes her own yarn and she talks about "breaking colors" especially when she dyes yarn with koolaid and wilton food colors. but, all that aside, I think you did a beautiful job!! I love the dark blue with camo contrast and the shibori the most. totally going to try this as well as tyedying yarn. ^-^

To get super vibrant colors, I dye my items dry. Sometimes I'll even do a soda ash soak and dry them before putting on the dye. Otherwise, like a lot of posters said, I get all my items banded and ready then get the dyes on them in one go as fast as possible so it has as much potency as possible. Also letting them sit at least 24 hours is key. I'd love to try ice dyeing next time! Love how yours turned out!

I’ve only done a bit of tye dying, but this is how I have done it is: First, I of course fold/roll/do whatever with my shirt. I then start to pour my colors onto the fabrics, after doing so, I wrap them and wait 24 hours, maybe a few extra. After the shirts have sat for a few hours, I rinse them, then let them lay out on the rail of my patio to air dry. [you don’t have to put them on your patio of course, you just need them to air dry.] After they have sat for a while, I put them in the dryer!

Fiber instructor and professional dyer here, you did great and here are a few extra tips. Always wear N95 masks when working with dye in powder form. For the pole shibori technique a large diameter pvc pipe works the best. Then compact your warped fabric down the pole. Colors always dry out lighter and the kit has a medium saturation of dye and that is a medium dye value. Black is the hardest color to dye you need a high ratio of dye your amount of fabric. keep dying and layering colors your fabrics will become rich and complex in color
