I'm one of those people who, while I don't really understand the deeper meaning of abstract art, can really enjoy the colors and shapes. It's just visual appeal. I think that the majority of these hit that mark. It kinda makes me want to try.
@Saffirance
@Saffirance 2 жыл бұрын
I think the meaning in most art is made up. A good abstract should just look cool, be pretty or edgy and be a good decoration for a wall. A great abstract can make the room and can invoke feelings. I'm an artist and the message I am sending with my art is usually " I'm pretty to look at and you need to buy me because you've never seen any art more beautiful. It's one of a kind you must have it!" I'm not sending a political statement or have some deep meaning behind it. I saw something that inspired me and I painted it. You are not the only one that doesn't get the meaning. Likely there was never a meaning to get. Some people would like you to feel dumb for not seeing the meaning. It just makes them feel smart. Ignore that stuff.
@Saffirance
@Saffirance 2 жыл бұрын
Go ahead and try. It's finished when it looks good. Otherwise keep going. Mix colors first. Color right out of the tube can be less interesting unless you are going for those really bright vivid. It might help to look at things you think are pretty and use those colors together that you already know you like together. Some colors just don't look great side by side. That should help you succeed. You can so do this. Abstract can be just playing with paint until a happy accident makes it look good. Having a plan helps. You can take a photo and enhance it in photo shop until it doesn't look like anything anymore and try to paint it if it looks cool. That's my advice and yes anyone who cares enough to put in the time can make art. Have fun!

@@milster08 this is not a negative comment, every abstract art relates to everyone in different ways, and maybe, watching it's process of being created just relates to us in a way in the middle and then it lost the meaning in the end, that's our feelings answering the art live, as it's being created. Some might like, some might not, some might like it in the middle and don't at the end, that's what's this comment was about or just how I felt about this. My favourite branch of abstract art is abstracted art, studying an object, scene or a person and emphasizing specific shapes or colours, it would be interesting to see you create abstract shapes from sculptures or paintings you've done before, like an in-between your normal style and abstract or even a series/progress from your normal style to abstract
@KaiSub

Abstract is such a large spectrum that I don't think it's fair to say "I do not like abstract art" I don't like most abstract paintings, and I don't really like abstract sculptures, but at the same time I've seen some fucking amazing abstract art (Peter Draws for example) It's hard to lump everything abstract into one category, even though it is all abstract...

People tend to be referring to incomprehensible images of random shapes, splats, and scribbles; in which case it is completely fair to say they don't like it. They could use more words to specify what they mean, but in the end we know exactly what they mean without doing that. So I disagree.

I never really understood abstract or modern art until I heard "4'33" by John Cage performed live. The piece is literally 4 minutes and 33 seconds of complete silence, with the performer(s) sitting there the entire time, but when you experience 2000 people sitting in a completely silent room for that long, it's amazing how powerful that amount of silence becomes.

This is my favorite video you’ve made so far. So good! Not only was it educational but so interesting. I love seeing the different styles in people and seeing how a persons style can be transferred into a new medium or category. I personally love the piece inspired by distance, you’re dark painting using some orange and different palette knives, and the portrait. I also have to say that the sunny piece using gold paper and warm tone paint is amazing. It feels very much like autumn. After seeing you do this I’d love to see how you work with realism and maybe some oil paint.

I personally loved the one with gold leaf and white spiral, and the bottom half being yellow, orange, red, and purple spots. It reminds me of a sunny field. And for me yellow represents hopefulness. I like the curves of it and it all seems to flow together. I also love the colour scheme, I like how the colours work together and I love the shine that the gold provided, for me it added to the piece and complimented all the other aspects of it. I also feel like I should note, the grey and green piece that was an example of complimenting a room, I didn’t really like it, until it was in the room and it really did compliment the rest of the room and work well

As someone who loves abstract art and values it quite highly I thought I'd throw in my two cents here. I am studying art in college and my painting teacher told us that abstract art is actually the most difficult to get "right". And I agree. The term abstraction itself goes into all art-making. In order to depict anything you are painting you have to begin to simplify it as you can not for example paint every single leaf on a tree. When people say abstract art what they generally mean is that something has been abstracted and simplified to the point of non recognizable forms. However just because this has happened it does not mean that the rules of form and composition are thrown out. The illusion of space can still be created and requires some skill to form. Balance, line, shape, texture they're all still important and if you cannot balance them within a piece that's when it looks "bad". Color theory is also another huge part of it and I feel where many people trip up. For the abstract art that I enjoy and gain great inspiration from they are not only emotional but also incredibly planned and filled with knowledge and skill. I really enjoyed you're pieces but for example the grey and green one you hung up- It is lovely but if you wanted more interest and depth I would've loved to see you add some cooler dark tones to the grey to help push it back in space and then mix in maybe some yellow into the green and layer it on top to pull it forward and create a greater play of tones within the piece. Glad to see you going out of your comfort zone! If you've reached the end of this rant thanks! I didn't plan for It to be so long!

As much as I would love to agree with you, things like that, overthinking a piece, and executing it "according to rules, and how it should be perceived" takes the joy out of creating art, art is emotion, a feeling. If you can't paint without that, a painting even abstract would mean nothing. :)
@Piggiemushroom
@Piggiemushroom 5 жыл бұрын
Elisa Metz very true. And I agree and I feel especially in the beginning it is good to learn but not get hung up on the "rules" (which I feel are more of a guide- one thing I love is when people can break those rules in a successful way, if everyone followed the rules we'd have no progression). I feel though that as you grow as an artist you Increase your skill and are able to combine that with the emotion- which is, I think, what I most admire. There's something so thrilling about seeing not only a piece filled with emotion and meaning but also a piece so fluidly and naturally balanced, with each color playing off of the other with perfect harmony- I feel that is the place that most artists desire to reach. Before going to art school I foolishly though that abstract was easy and tried it myself ending up with an unappealing mess that made me feel quite empty, but now I feel the things I have learned are not necessarily rules but just facts of art have made me more free and excited to create. I now know how to move the eye, how to make it pause and how to trick it into perceiving depth and motion etc and that's really fun. I hope that responded to your comment lol I realize I went off on a tangent again

@@Piggiemushroom It's cool, dw ;) - It's I guess how I feel at the moment, not being into art, because it was criticized most of the time, which kept me from creating art from heart, and trying to make it "perfect" so it would appeal to people (my parents in this case) so.. ye ^^

Elisa Metz I hope you continue to make art! I am actually studying to be an art therapist and as much as the technical nerdy side of art (the but I've been rambling about) excites me, what I am going to be doing in my practice is very much what you describe! Our ability to create- no matter in what form is so incredible and I feel all art has value no matter if it is highly informed by tons of rules or bursting with emotions. I hope I don't discourage anyone into thinking they have to know the ins and outs of what I was talking about to be an artist because as you said it is so much about your emotion too. This external depiction of internal processes. Keep creating and thanks for having this discussion with me!

I personally would have loved to see some purple in the gold foil picture cos purple and yellow are just my entire aesthetic lol 😁. Thing is...Art is abstract at it's core. When you go to paint a tree or a house or a boat you usually start with a relatively abstract shape and then try to turn it into something comprehendable as the subject you are doing. Usually involving various abstract shapes that work together to create the illusion of a tree, or a house, or a boat...or at least with the intent. From a design stand point, abstract can become even more important since it allows you to make something out of nothing and often times that something is something that is, in and of itself, uncomprehendable because it's something that doesn't exist. Or doesn't exist yet depending on what you are designing.
@Quetzaluki

You could even take that a step farther and consider the nature of realism vs. representation. When you create art, no matter how "realistic" it is, it's still not real-you're still creating something representational. :) Jazza's painting of the abstract cat is just as real as a "photorealistic" painting of a cat, and just as much art.

@@QuetzalukiVery true. The real world as we see it is not what it appears to be as we only see our own perception of the world around us. I’d say that abstract art is definitely a creativity thing. Creativity itself comes in so many shapes and sizes, and everyone is slightly different creatively. I myself understand the connection of abstract art and emotion and I’ve always had trouble drawing or painting objects/animals/people especially with confidence, while abstract doodles were therapeutic and carry meaning with me. It probably connects to my interest in poetry. And you know what? That’s okay! All types of art is awesome, including the art of people, animals, places, objects.. and the idea of being able to draw them well sounds amazing, I just don’t have the right creative mindset (I can do realistic drawings semi-okay if i have an hd reference that i’m copying but that’s different) and that’s perfectly fine! We’re all creative people and that itself is something to bond over.

I was drawn to it. the harsh lines and silver rectangles seemed so proper and posh, whereas the curved lines weren't perfectly spaced and even, which seemed to distance from the very proper rectangles and lines. The curved lines seemed playful and perhaps like the more relaxed/loose side of a very stern posh person. Perhaps the playful side was so distant from the stern person they had lost their fun self in the process.

I love the self portrait the most, its so beautiful and oddly calming even though its made of warm colors more than cool colors

I loved the cat, and the gold leaf one, and the blue/yellow one and the green/purple one, those are some of my favorite color combos too

I loved every single piece you created in this video! However, I have taken many "art appreciation" classes and classes that expanded on abstract painting; which has respectively given me a strong pull towards these types of artworks. They are truly beautiful pieces!!
