Some tips from a linocutter: 1. You seem to have figured it out, but rule 0 is don’t carve toward yourself. That includes your other hand that is gripping the block. There is a special tool called a bench hook that is made to keep the block from sliding when you carve. I would suggest that you invest in one if you plan to continue carving. 2. If you have trouble with how hard the block is, heat it up. Linoleum gets softer when it it warm! Either leave it in the sun for a few minutes of use a hair dryer. 3. Instead of moving your gouge in big sweeps, try wiggling it just a bit as you go. It really makes it better carving. 4. When you’re cleaning the block after printing, don’t rub it with anything textured if you are planning to use it again. Little grooves can form on its surface, and that’s bad news for an art medium that is purely using negative space. 5. There are linoleum blocks like the one that you used, and there are ones that are mounted on cork. Both types are good in their own ways. The type you had, which is just a thin linoleum slab, is nice because you can simply cut off outer pieces instead of having to deal with lots of chatter (which is what the completely carved out areas are called. The lines in these spaces are “chatter lines”). However, they also slide easily and are more fragile. With linoleum that’s mounted on cork, you can’t cut anything out, so you have to deal with a lot of chatter, but it doesn’t slide around nearly as much, especially if you have a bench hook, and it is much sturdier. It’s all a matter of preference which one you use (I like the ones on cork). 6. Pieces really do turn out nicely when you use ink. However, it can be pretty expensive. A good brand to buy ink from, and pretty good carving tools from as well, is Speedball. I usually like to buy my blocks from them, since they are only 6-7 dollars from them at 5x7 dimensions, which is a good size. Hope these were helpful to someone! (: Feel free to ask me anything, too
@nicolebreithaupt5 жыл бұрын
Oo I have some more tips I'd like to add. If you ink up your piece and do some trial runs, leave the linoleum alone for like a day and it'll hold on to ink so much better than the day before. To get off all the scraps or dust like particles after your finished carving, I like to use a cheap toothbrush and lightly go across the whole piece in little circle motions. Newsprint is the go to paper for trials and Stonehenge is the go to for final results. Finally, if you do accidently break a piece of your linoleum off, superglue works, but make sure you don't get any on the part that you'll be inking, because the ink won't stick on it.
@nicolebreithaupt5 жыл бұрын
Oh also Stonehenge has a right side and a wrong side. Most of the time the wrong side is the side that has a number written on it in pencil that's on it when you buy it.

Tips that I have learned over the years of doing linoleum printing: -Get a heat gun if your continuing doing this -You can rub graphite on the back and trace it to have those lines then go over it on the linoleum with sharpie (or another marker that doesn’t wash off with water, I have made that mistake before) -Get a smaller brayer! You can use a smaller brayer then do a light ink layer over a couple times can make your prints come out clearer and those small details will come through. -Don’t flip the linoleum onto the paper, flip the paper onto your linoleum, rub it with your hand to get the friction, then roll it, peel a corner off, and let gravity do its work to pull it off. -wash your hands before you peel off the linoleum so you keep your paper clean and free of fingerprints or smudges -Make sure your space is also clean, don’t roll ink in the same place your paper is -You can also use chalk or transfer paper for a sketch/line design to the linoleum All of these things I have had to figure out the hard way and my grade (and art quality) had decreased because of those mistakes I made over the years. Obviously if you want more tips on a few other things on any type of printing (linoleum, wood, screen, etc...) I have plenty that would be helpful.

The worst part was that the portrait was due at the end of class in order to be submitted for the competition! I was embarrassed so I didn’t tell my teacher but the kid next to me (thank god) got me some paper towels and I tried to clean as quickly as I could. I never have, (Edit: cut myself, grazed my fingers with the tool once though) but the art still turned out bad. (I also only got to stamp it twice before we were kicked out for Quarantine, so that was great.)

I wish I could do this again. I did this in high school, and it was actually one of my favorite art projects. I had never heard of it before, so I was surprised with how well mine went! I think it’s because I was a more patient carver than my classmates. The carving went really well, but I screwed up applying the paint quite a few times. We had to make layered ones, so we carved the first layer, printed it, and then carved the same block further for the foreground of the print. So we couldn’t reuse our blocks like stamps because we basically ruined them all by the second carving. I can’t draw at all, but sculpting and carving actually works pretty well for me. Guess it’s time to invest in some carving tools...
@felikee45125 жыл бұрын
You probably did linoleum print? Usually there you carve every layer on the same plate :0
@HelloImAru5 жыл бұрын
Sounds like you did a reduction print. :) They take a lot of planning, but have some seriously neat results. You should hop back in to lino. There's a great FB group called "Linocut Friends" if you're keen on getting in to it more seriously. The medium is really fun. I'm glad it's been gaining popularity recently.

@OnyxShard15 жыл бұрын
@Jeeblets Aside from the obvious of using acrylic paint instead of ink, you typically want to keep the lino face up and then place the paper on top, smoothing the paper rather than struggling to push the lino down. He does it once but then resorts back to flipping the lino over instead. Not to mention he also makes the final piece harder on himself to make by cutting out a lot of the lino to use as a stencil rather than re-using the same block after washing it clean of the original colour. I'm not sure if other people cut the block to make a stencil like Jazza did, but I was taught never to do that as it leads to more room for error (like a wonky boarder or in Jazza's case, broken pieces)

Ok so I know this is an older video but it came up in my recommendations. I took a class in college. I have a tip. (Or two) Use anti slip mat under the block while carving. These are often used in kitchens as drawer liner Also use your dominant palm at the back of the carving tool and two fingers of your non dominant hang on not quite the tip, but part of the metal to push your tool (this was what the professor had told us to do and it made carving the linoleum smoother)
