Sticking with one style is really hard for me. So style challenges are a way for me to get out of my comfort zone and try out a new art style.
This time I try my hand at sci fi pulp art because I absolutely love all the details and amazing colors on these magazine covers. I used Procreate on the iPad pro for the main illustration work, and then added some textures at the end in Photoshop. Follow along as I walk you through how I went about tackling my illustration in this style. Enjoy!

Thanks! If I was going to do something for beginners, I would probably choose something more simple to recreate. And I might just do that!

Brave the Woods I am a beginner would kill to learn how you make these sketches and paintings in the sci fi pulp art form... understanding the layering isn’t confusing it’s just like what actual tools are you using in the app like what brushes and effects or what have you to make it really look like a painting and how you put the colors you paint with above the art and all that fun stuff! And I guess you are using some type on electric sketchpad? I would totally appreciate an in depth look at building this type of art! thanks beast!

This is simply beautiful! Great job capturing that aesthetic! I was wondering, if you did this in Photoshop (I don't have ProCreate), what types of pens you might use for that grainy, smudgy look in your colors. It is beautiful.

Thank you so much Thomas! The trick to getting that cool texture was using color pencil brushes. I tried using paint brushes, like gouache, but it didn't feel right for some reason. Not sure exactly what brush pack to get but I do know that www.retrosupply.co has lots of incredible packs that could work! I am biased because I make brushes for them, but they are also the brushes I use most of the time haha. Best of luck!

That is so awesome to hear. Thanks for that! I really wish I could produce more videos than one a week, but sadly I can't. My channel is really new so I have to start making more money off it before I can take on less client work and focus on KZbin. Perhaps someday that will be an option! I would definitely enjoy that :) Thanks!

Hello, amazing tutorial. I have a question though. I've finished my sketch and ready to apply colors. I'm able to follow the same form and application in this video but the colors don't come out quite right. It looks very smooth, and I can't seem to manage the vintage rough look to the paint. Any recommendations on how to make the color a litle less perfect and painted look? Thanks

When you say build the color up or that you modified the base color, what do you mean by this in photoshop? I've selected my color swatch but do you mean you repeatidly apply the base color in a blending mode that darkens after every application? So in other words it has some transparency when you start.
