I turned my 4x4 Troopy into a full-time home (my brutal mistakes)

Alright! Time to move into NEILA (Alien backwards) full-time!
My trusty Toyota LandCruiser GXL 70 series, 78 model Troop Carrier (also known as the Troopy here in Oz) is going to take me places.
But this 4x4 world is certainly quite confusing. So here is my first layout (out of many no doubt) of my tiny home on wheels.
It might not be perfect, but it's a start and it's enough to have me living in it comfortably for a while.
Also, let me share some mistakes I've already made with this car that are costing me thousands, that I wish I knew before getting this car. We all have to start somewhere, but I hope you don't make the same mistakes as me!

livin in the 76 series - since ~ close to 3 years now cheers from spain & regarding the drilling - on the inside there is so many threads you can use from the removed seats and even in the rear - i basically got my whole set up "floating" but fixed with the threads that are already there. So no extra drilling. Obviously the layout of the troopy is a little different but Iam sure if you dig in - you´ll find some :-)

I had a Mitsubishi Delica 4x4 van for a few great years, and just absolutely loved it! Unfortunately it had to go and I now have a D Max which is great but nothing beats having a bed in the back and I do miss my van! If I had a spare $100k I'd definately buy a trophy like yours and deck the back out with a bed and storage... Anyway, I'm in Sydney and always keen for an adventure! I could help you with your learning journey if you like... Hot tip: the High country in Victoria is amazing and the 'Blue Rag Range' track (look it up😊) is a bucket list for all 4x4 enthusiasts! It's slightly challenging but well worth it...

Just got a Troopy myself, but have had many 4WDs, you do not need to change the wheels and tyres to go anywhere in Australia, wider tyres are not better off road, they add weight and drastically reduce fuel economy. Reseach how and when to deflate tyres for offroad, the key is length of tyre footprint not width. Keep your current bull bar and scrub bars as no need for wide tyres and flares. You wont need a lift, the Troopy with standard 33" tyres you have is plenty of clearance, mine is stock and has more clearance than my last 2" lifted 4wd Toyota. Save money on roof rack and just buy the 3 bar rack system not he expensive flat rack systems, to attach awning and Roof Top Tent if you get one. Ive had 4 different RTT variations, best was a side opening aluminium hardshell, more room than rear opening and same external size, make sure your can leave sleeping gear inside when closed. Dont get caught up with Insta Troopy hype. Have fun touring oz

He's right. I'm an 80 series owner with a very clean vehicle and after thinking long and hard about each and every possible 'upgrade' locally made, American, British, Japanese, I find that most of the "4WD" or "overland" aftermarket products are vain hype that exploit the uneducated or illiterate. It's just flexing. Big roof racks for example look cool but don't nearly work as people expect, after calculating maximum load bearing minus the weight of a heavy rack (especially the likes of the major brands) there's only 20kg or so left for carry capacity, which is solved better storing internally (and covered) or with simple roof racks. Same for roof tents etc. It's even dangerous in high wind areas. Massive steel bull bars also are overkill and the lights that come with them often underperform compared to ones from lighting specialists. All of these additions throws off handling and safety. If you check vehicle wreckers you'll see how trucks loaded with aftermarket parts that have rolled and gotten into major accidents. Toyota OEM has been well thought out by meticulous engineers for longevity, efficiency, and performance (to beat Land Rover etc). Without a cage the last thing you want is for your surf gear to impale someone in an accident. Consider L-tracks and strong nylon webbing, this is how airlines and military aircraft hold seats and cargo. Peace

Good response from seabee. Would not bother changing the bullbar, siderails flares, rims or tyre size. At the very least use your troopy and prove to yourself that what you already have is insufficient. Stock works well enough for majority of situations. The positives from altering your troopy will also come with drawbacks.

If you want to satisfy your ego, do not listen to this advice. If you however want to successfully travel around OZ with a minimum of fuzz and the most possible comfort and success, then listen to @seabee167's advice. You will have only two enemies on your trip, complexity and weight. Your bullbar is great, the 2" liftkit only lifts your ego and a couple of solar panels for your (absolute separate) second battery are a must. Wider tyres only cost you petrol and a 3 or 4 bar roofrack will complete your car. Wax rust-proofing is an absolute must for a Toyota and you still can get it done. Travel safe and enjoy every day

I have written comments on your previous videos. Our lives seem to run a parallel or at the very least, have many similarities. We also share many of the same personality traits, values and characteristics. I am a free spirited gypsy, minimalist, nomad fuelled by a boundless curiosity. I have had 30 different addresses in 51 years. On Christmas Eve 2023, at the age of 50, I drove the Toyota van I purchased in Newcastle, back to my "home" in SE Qld. On Christmas Day a destructive tornado ripped through the region I was living in. I gave notice to the property owner whose granny flat I'd been living in, whittled down my belongings (and as a minimalist,, I'm constantly surprised that i can a find a few items that i no longer need) packed my life in to the van and hit the road. I had a few pit-stops at various friends homes and have been living a van life full time since January 9th 2024. I continue to explore the Sunshine Coast and Hinterland, the Blackall and Toowoomba Ranges. I did a "pilgrimage" trip to Brunswick Heads mid February for some closure and had a very peculiar moment when I thought you'd parked temporarily on a strange angle behind my van near the beach! The only reason I doubted it was you was because you were in the passenger seat; not the drivers seat (?) This van lifestyle is a huge learning curve and one that I embrace wholeheartedly (even though it was born out of a heartbreak - I ended my engagement to my best friend). I achieved in 3 months what I had anticipated would take 12. Ive experienced first hand how trust and surrender play a part in manifesting our dreams.This life is amazing and I've never felt more like a free human. I can remove everything from my van in 20 minutes and it would be an empty shell. I have absolutely no desire to convert it in to a "camper" with permanent fixtures or fit-out at this time (I also wonder if that decision is born from minimalism(?)) Also, as a van (not a camper) my insurance is cheaper 😉 My comfy mattress rests on top of 2 wooden pallets cable-tied together 😂 In any case, I'd love to cross paths with you. I have been enjoying your videos for years and interestingly came across your content at a tipping point in my life (unknown to me at the time) and have found them to be valuable and at times synchronous. Warning, keep the size of wheels you have, going larger is not always the best. The most common problems going larger, is doing axle seals. The wheels that the vehicle came with, are wheels that the vehicle was designed for. The other problem is diff gear ratios, they should be changed to match the new wheel size but rarely ever done by people going down that route. Toyota's 4x4's, usually have enough clearance but if you want more, just do a body lift, but being a troopy you should be fine. If your not used to 4 wheel driving, I suggest that you do a 4 wheel driving course because any mistakes made in the outback can be your last mistake. Sorry for being so negative, but I had a friend and his dog perish, back in the 80's in the Pilbra region of Western Australia.

Definitively, keep the stock tire size (at least keep narrow) they are perfectly fine for touring. Anything bigger will probably bring nothing for your usage except to burn more fuel. So no need to bother with flares, no need to change the bull bar. Huge money and time saved to spend on what matters: building a comfy habitat inside and around the Troopy.

I own the exact same vehicle and absolutely disagree, the narrow tyres are terrible on road and understeer quite badly, the OEM tyres wore at a ridiculous rate, and were nothing flash offroad. I fitted 285/75 x 16 Toyo all terrain tyres on zero offset steel rims and they have transformed the ride and handling of my troopy, The rolling diameter is identical to the OEM tyres, no need for diff correction (nor is there a need for this on 35's) the offset is same factory, it did not need a lift to fit them, and they are aesthetically much better. Impact on fuel economy is a thing, mine uses 1L/100km more on wide tyres. Flares I fitted Bushranger soft flares, and I doubt you would need to change your bar work if you went down that path. I wouldn't rush into a lift kit, mine spends alot of time offroad in the Vic High Country, and outback touring, they are very capable in standard trim. Body lifts are a terrible idea, and absolutely agree that a 4x4 course is money well spent. You have a iconic 4wd, you've made a good start on your fitout, get a winch, some recovery gear, do a 4wd course if you never done 4WDing before, never go down tracks that you haven't got a get out plan . . . and most importantly, get out and enjoy yourself . . . you never know what life will throw at you

Hija Sorelle, I would definitely think about going for a roof-rack and a rooftent! You would also free up a lot of space in the back if you don't sleep there. Thule has got some amazing roof-tents, they are the way to go on an Overlander. Takes nothing more then like 10 minutes to fold out and you get an amazing view with the made in windows. Jack and Megan are Aussies on KZbin. They fitted out a troopy with rooftopper with cut out. Checkout their earlier videos. They are transitioning to caravan after 2yrs ft travel. You could message them any questions Sorelle, they are amazing with replying. I think their fit out would work for you. Screw down you will need especially on the corrugations here. Don't go nuts on rims or too wide tyres, steel rims are the cheapest strongest and can be repaired out in the bush plus the wider you go = more fuel more problems, grip and good side wall's a tyre repair kit for a start

I had a 60 series. Originals wheels and all never had a problem to go anywhere. Don't stress to much about the milles lol the engine will must probably outlives the body like mine. For this reason I would invest more into things to protect the body and learn to drive off road, basic mechanic, flat tyre first aid maybe an electric winch, ect. Air flow when you set camp is also very important. Top roof could help. I had an heavy duty roof rack and it was great to chill for sunrise and sunset. Keep it simple. Have fun

Good call on not going with the underbody spray from the dealer. Research Lanolin if you haven’t already. Cheap and is the best to spray on and repels water/ salt water. Lanolin is a sheepwool product. It’s worked wonders under our Hilux.

Ok so a few things you wanna do ASAP 1. Get the largest ser of wheels and tires possible. Mount 2 full size spares on the roof and 2 on the rear with a wheel carrier. 2. Install the highest suspension lift kit you can possibly find. This will greatly assist crossing all types of terrain, improve handling and comfort. 3. Install the largest bull bar and heaviest winch you can find on the market. Again, this will greatly improve the driving comfort and also fuel efficiency. 👍

I bought a new Troopy almost exactly a year ago, and I’m slowly fitting out. Love what you have done with interior. I agree natural wood looks best but I have seen some amazing fit outs in black and white from a WA company Odessey. I’m hoping to do some long trips in mine, and I’m doing a roof conversion with Headspace (plus awning) but I still work full time. My lovely wife also says she’ll only come if I get a caravan so there is that…. You can remove the scrub bars without removing bullbar (side steps may be a problem but probably OK) that will allow you to fit the flares. For tyres I wouldn’t go too big, for some stuff it improves off roading capability (mud and very rocky up hill) but it is actually worse down hill and will destroy your fuel economy. It also puts more strain on a lot of stuff and lifting the car to do it makes you less stable and more likely to tip sideways which whenever I do hard tracks in mine is the only thing that ever worries me. I put Toyot 285/75 R16s on mine but wish I had gone 255/85 R16 which would not need a flare but only come in Mud Terrain (so noisier, faster wearing and worse performing on tarmac in the wet but would be awesome off road. You want longer not wider in your tyre footprint so for most off roading these would be better than my wider tyre. One thing I didn’t see but you will need is recovery gear - you may have them already but some Maxtrax or Tread boards are a very good investment along with some straps. There are a number of companies that do tables to hold Maxtraxs on the side of the car - but you would need to put some holes in it for that.

Canvas waterbag - maybe 2, the kind where the water soaks into the canvas and evaporates very slowly to keep the water cool. That way you get cool water without using fridge space. I'd go for a roof rack too, not only to get the surfboards outside, but as a place for solar panels. And extra storage on occaission. Of course solar panels lead to a couple of deep cycle batteries and an isolation switch doohickey. You don't need power and a fridge, but they are nice to have, so being able to keep the fridge running without running the motor as well as allowing you to charge your devices and literally keep the lights on seems like such a useful thing. And maybe power some fans for very hot nights. And since you sew maybe sew some fabric panels - muslin or cotton that you can wet and hang in the windows for very hot nights. Ghetto air conditioning. It works really well. My Nan used to hang a wet sheet on her back door during really hot Adelaide summers and it actually works a treat, even witha. hot breeze.

Sense you've already got a platform placed for napping inside, I'd recommend mounting a rack up top so you can move some stuff outside of the cab. More space inside allows for more elbow room inside. Along with that I would consider getting some boxes you can mount up top the rack for your smaller items you currently have inside so you have room in your cab boxes for replacement parts. I live in america and have been in 4x4 community for the entirety of the 24 short years that I've been bugging around on this planet, one thing I always draw back to is replacement parts. I keep a spare axle and some spare leaf springs for my '19 taco, luckily I haven't had to do a swap yet but my previous rigs ive had to in the past. I would also consider your ability to make water along with water storage, water is heavy so if you can make some it will lighten your load as well. Just a few things to consider.

I'd love to hear from Sorelle on this topic too In the mean time, as a full time van-lifer, I can offer some insight perhaps (?) In the region I've been travelling in, there are ample Aquatic centres / public pools where you can shower for $2.50. I explain to staff that I'm travelling and just want to use the shower and am ocassionally told to enter for free. Also, there are many free cold water showers on the foreshores along the coast in SE Qld, particularly near Surf Life Saving Clubs. I use an app to find the closest safe drinking water supply. I have a "tap key" . I attach this to the top of the tap in order to turn the tap on and fill 2 x 5 litre "water safe" plastic containers. Either use the water from the containers or directly from the tap for cleaning utensils etc Hope this info helps 😊

Standard wheels and suspension will be fine while you are learning about driving off-road - if anything consider more robust tyres on standard rims. Have a look at upright fridges - great for saving some weight, good volume and economical footprint. I was a sceptic but mine has been great - Tanami, Gibb, across Australia. Fine in heat and humidity.

Roof top tent is way to go. Flares should still fit your Troopy with the Original Bullbar. May see you on the road sometime

Awnings - highly recommend the 23Zero 270 Falcon awning. Brilliant quality for the price and huge coverage. You can buy additional side panels to make it like a room also. Rhino Rack Platform is also a great option. Lots of accessories and fantastic functionality to move things around easily. Good luck with the build and your travels.

I did two weeks in WA in a similar vehicle with a topper tent and 100% think if I was doing it more long term I’d want the pop up. Not having to climb up and down for minimal things would make the difference for me. Plus my friends that say they tried doing life in something they couldn’t stand in for a long period of time they struggled.

My first thought seeing your surfboards in the back was “girl gotta get some roof racks” 😆 I personally think roof top tents are such a waste of GVM weight and fuel not to mention top heavy. You’ve got an awesome setup inside the cab and heaps of new possibilities for future. But yeah, totally roof racks (or even roof platform for boards and anything else you might need to carry on top).

Nice, can't wait to see where it takes you! As for the RTT, it's a bitch to set up/pack up every day you want to go for a drive. You have to cart your stuff up and down the ladder to set up pack up. Also think about temperatures, if camping in winter down south it would be better to have your hi-top and much warmer than just a tent. Also there's a lot more wind being that the tent is on tip of your car, great for summer breeze, horrible in the cold wind! I would go hi-top for easier more comfortable living but if you want the challenge and cheapness just stick to RTT 😊

For whatever this is worth……. If you know that this is going to be your overland home and you plan on living that way for a number of years, then it would make more sense to invest in a pop-top conversion straight away (you can heat it much easier if needed and you can stand up inside when it’s raining). If you just want to try it out for 6 - 12 months to see if you like it, then go with the roof top tent. That way if you don’t like it, you can sell all the accessories to a wider market and sell your stripped out vehicle to a wider market (or keep it). If you convert your troopy to a pop-top and don’t like it, then you are selling a complete vehicle to a much smaller market. Obviously the foregoing removes all emotion and love from the decision and personally I’d always go pop-top, but like I said, for what it’s worth.

We got it on our new troopy. Definately get it ppf wrapped,going down those tight trails and hearing the branches scratch against the paint is not enjoyable . If your worried about rust drench underneath with inox plus in cavities under jack and in door drains . I even took the tail lights off and sprayed there . I`ve had mine for 20+ years and its still not rusty even after launching boats . Don`t overload it with accessories , it wont go as well off road

As someone who lived an astro van and truck with a cap.. be mindful of weight.. I used slats instead of full pieces of plywood for less weight .. makes a huge difference

Hi, just found your videos. Long story short. DO NOT change tyres. They are optimal for your set up. Do some travel first before making the decision to change your tyres. If anything a good set of all terrain tyres would be the most you need. Get a winch once you decide on the bull bar ( I would not change that) and recovery gear. Get some max tracks and a decent tow bar. Secondly, you have heaps of subscribers and everyone will give you their 2 cents worth. But you are intelligent. Do your research. My advice, is get a good roof tent (no need for the gold plated ones - there are some good products that are not $$$). Get one that you can leave your pillows and sleeping bags in. You can put your surf boards on the tent. Try not to get a heavy tent, something around the 80kg mark. Also a ladder bolted onto the troopie to get into the tent. The ladders supplied are good but will take up space and tedious to pack and unpack. If modesty is not an issue, get an outdoor shower tent awning set up and a compostable potty (depends if you are into the environment or the chemical ones). If going off grid, get some solar and a good 12 volt set up. Again the most expensive is not the best. I would get 1 roof mounted solar panel and one portable one. The portable one is when you are camped for a few days under shade and the roof top is under the shade. Also a stand up fridge in the troopie may be difficult but if you an get it in, it would be easier to access food. Lastly.get a free standing 270 degree awning. It costs more but the convenience of setting up and decamping will be great. Again research the most practical ones. Remember just because it is the most expensive, it does not mean it is the best. Try to stick to the Aussie developed ones (they are mainly made in China though), as they are made for our conditions. I know that's a lot and most probably have been repeated by others. If so, then my comments reinforce them. That's my 2 cents worth, and welcome home. Happy travels. Just love your enthusiasm. reminds me of when I was your age.!!! But I have lost it, and now trying to find it.

Good plan to do it yourself. I did the same for us. Just bought all the wood from Builders Warehouse (Bunnings in your world). I would say if you plan to go off road you will need to bolt it all down. A bouncing floor and cupboard system in the back can do more damage I suspect than the roles you drill. It is hard to put holes in your new car, hey a few holes is better than chopping your roof off like we did (twice🤣- just got the new Hercules from AluCab). Enjoy the ride🤙 - Subscribed!

Yeah I’ve had a few roof top tents. They are the best. Plus I had a kangaroo slam into the drivers side of my car recently so kangaroo deterrents from super cheap are a good investment.

To be honest they are still a great bullbar 🌞 And yes bit annoying with the side rails though there are two types of sections wide or not the best and more cost effective way would be to order a pair of 79 series gxl this bend will accommodate for the flares...... Hope this helps 🙏🌞

Roof top tent, 270 awning and convert the rear to pull out kitchen. Or get a camper trailer or even hybrid van. Much more comfortable for 100% living on the road.

Even don’t think about roof tent … only roof conversion. Telling you person who had 3 rooftop tents in last 20 years and now has a Troopy with roof conversion …. Not enough time and space to explain difference. But you can sit, stand in your Troopy. You can go down from bedroom to kitchen or even simple toilet without going out when it’s raining or not nice environment.

Hello again little sister - my comment on previous video was quite long but also wanted to say beware of ‘car salesmen’ types who will want to sell you every accessory on the planet - get what you need not what you want and of course fit appropriate necessary items Ike bullbar, winch, roof racks for the board, dual battery system, led lights etc - the factory fitted clutch is known to be weak so research this important potential upgrade - you will notice the front wheel track is wider than the rear to accomodate the V8 - 4X4 Overland KZbinr Andrew St Pierre White (migrated to WA from South Africa) is an excellent resource who has ‘built’ several Troopies mainly V8s and now working on an auto four cylinder Troopy and Hiace with 4WD conversion - also find a lad or lassie that you can trust for all their advice.

Pop up roof is SO much pricier, HOWEVER, they are so much safer (emergency creepo evac) and overall less time consuming than the tent. I’d do that if I were you 😊
