Technology is wonderful to connect us, influence us, learn in ways we were not able to before. Social media in particular can introduce you to people, ideas, anything you may not have known or were less likely to stumble upon without social media. You, Madi, in particular changed my life absolutely. Phones need boundaries though because of the endless possibilities of use. It’s up to us to set the boundaries, and hopefully still want to enjoy the privilege of technology. Such a lovely video Madi! I would love to do the thinking and wondering myself more, and especially children should. 💞

I am 51 years old and I have NEVER owned a cell phone...soooo many people say that how do you survive?..they say I could NEVER do that!!..it really is sooo refreshing and I strongly encourage anyone that you do not need a cell phone in todays culture...sure there are times when my daughter and I get lost trying to find her friends house but we laugh because we know that I am going to have to go into 7-11 and ask directions from and actual human being...I am so proud of you and anyone who is trying to live life with less cell time!

The statement: “I don’t have to ask anybody, I just google it” is more profound than you know! As I look back at how it was in the 80’s and 90’s, there was so much more human communication and interaction. And as a person asked a question; and another one answered, those words of wisdom were heard by everyone in the vicinity. So you could glean knowledge you maybe didn’t need at the time. Also, you would learn by the experiences of others and the conversations that followed. We are being dumbed down and don’t even know it.

Last year I deleted all my social media and lots of apps off my phone and the difference was instant, I couldn’t believe how much time I got back and how much better I felt. Granted, I have a pile of notebooks and puzzle books I didn’t ‘need’ before, and I’ve had to be really mindful of not replacing one mind numbing activity for another (tv and KZbin for example), but I can’t tell you how much better my brain feels. While I’m on, your channel is absolutely beautiful!

This was convicting. I've thought about this subject a lot, especially as I plan to be a Mom sometime in the future. I think about my smartphone free childhood, and I love it. I realize I will need to drastically change some things if I want to give my own children a childhood even close to mine. I also miss the times before I had a phone, as a young adult. I'm addicted to it and don't like not having it to waste time on, but I simultaneously want to throw it out the window. It is a struggle!

I love this! My husband and I just finished a week of a "TV fast" because we felt our evenings could be better spent on other things and it's too easy to get into a mindless routine after dinner. I stopped watching the news nearly two years ago, I hate the dramatic music played on morning news programmes when I prefer gentle music. A few months ago my TV broke. As I spend more time on KZbin looking up things I am interested in, such as this video, I'm not in a rush to replace it. I've also decided to do other things in the evening. Currently I'm in the middle of getting all my art items out I haven't udes for years and making my Christmas cards. Yes it is cheaper and easier to buy some, but this is more fun.

I do enjoy music but i often dont play it enough. we have silent car rides and i realized those are my moments of peace. I loved this video. This was honestly very inspiring for me because i too have been feeling convicted about the time spent on my phone lately. As a stay at home mom to a toddler i find myself picking my phone up so often throughout the day and wasting so much time even if i check it with a good intention of finding a recipe or answering a text. It’s so easy to get distracted or even to just numb ourselves to what’s going on in our own hearts emotionally. There’s so much I want to do and work on and experience with my family but I often let my phone get in the way of that and it makes me feel as if i have no time when really, I know that I do. It truly is addicting and all consuming. This video really challenges me. I think I’m going to take a couple of days and try this as well.

Thanks so much for this video Madi, another triumphant piece of art as usual. Probably seen the book already, but check out the Opt Out Family x

I think about this all the time. I’m happy that social media helped me find your page for instance. I use my phone for recipes and finding trails to hike in the area. I often download maps so that when I’m hiking, I know where I’m at coordinates wise which is great since I often hike alone. But I think finding the places where the phone is your time waster is the important aspect. I don’t watch TV but I waste time on social media so maybe by deleting the apps that have the most time wasting impact and keeping the things that are beneficial is the best idea for me.😊 I’m a certain age where in college we didn’t even have email yet😂

A wonderful reminder. Very literally all my stress comes from my phone. I hate it and love it all at the same time. I’m trying to figure a way of just making my phone a phone but then I see all these little apps here and there that are on it, and I’m like, I do use them but do they make me happy? I am so grateful I am of the age where we grew up without a phone and it does make me sad how overwhelmed our children grow to be, my son will not be getting a phone for as long as humanly possible❤

I mean, we had phones, but landlines don't attach at our hip everywhere we go. hehe. I have a recipe binder which I use every week! I print out recipes I want to try. Love that you showed what you got more value from compared to other things. Love that your childhood convicted you a bit in the making of this! It really is sad that we can find things out immediately instead of considering things a bit! It is cool that you were looking at an actual map! My dad used to use a real map when we would travel and sometimes he'd get lost. I remember he'd evaluate the map the day before we'd go somewhere so that wouldn't happen, because he gets angry easily and that is not fun. I am terrible with maps and was then too!! Great thought provoking video.

Going through the exact same thing! I deleted everything off my phone and started all over again. I have a watch, I have a radio and an alarm, I have physical books for me and for toddler, and a small TV for a few favourite shows. We have no subscriptions, no music accounts, no online or phone games, no streaming, no social media (expect YT), no digital photos and about 9x9 x 100 photos. No computer. No Kindle. None of that. And from January, no Amazon. The expectation is YT, google, email, WhatsApp and library audio/ebooks. I'm still an extreme minimalist (1 of a few hygiene and cleaning, low kitchen inventory, no beside tables, no coffee table, no entryway stuff, every book fits on one shelf, only 5 toys in the garden, very little or no home decor or art or photos on the wall, only a Christmas tree and window lights, no easter or halloween or valentines day decor, no plants, a occasional fresh flowers and candles, etc. But not anymore when it comes to my phone... or maybe I am? Idk. And actually, I do miss having a dinning table (instead of a 2nd sofa) and a dresser. It's so hard and so easy at the same time. But I'll always say its better to takeaway stuff to find out if mean anything to you.

Now they are young adults and have both television and unlimited access to their smartphones. I miss the simplicity of very limited technology in our home. I feel like everyone reads less (including myself) and interacts less with each other when we have our phones. Some days I hate my phone and what time with it has stolen from my life… Thank you Madisun for these powerful reminders that we can do better, we can be better about limiting or cutting ourselves off from what the world says we need.

But honestly sometimes I think its just an excuse.. I don’t even take photos anymore. I have so many useful skills that I never would have learned without social media and those skills have made life better for my family. But I can't help but wonder if my presence without a phone addiction would still be more valuable to them than homemade soap and great recipes. I wonder how my kids would answer that question when they are grown. I convince myself that I cannot thrive without all of the information, but I think that you are right when you say that is just an excuse.

This. I’ve been telling my husband ALL week, I want to throw my phone into the woods and buy a flip phone. I’m not even on social media, I avoid the news. I only watch you on KZbin, but I hate how people want me to be available at all times. I feel like I need a break and I often talk about how I have a yearning to go back in time to live in a simpler world. Even though I practice simplicity at home, it’s so disheartening to see how things are going. I witnessed 3 children crying and on the verge of panic attacks while trick or treating the other night. That is not normal that so many kids suffer from social anxiety these days. And we have our phones to thank for that. People barely speak in person anymore. 😢

I guess I like the convince of a phone. But I also love going without a phone. I keep thinking we should take the WiFi away from our kids though

Madisun...you are SPOT. ON. The Holy Spirit has just recently been taking me through a similar process, helping me realize that "walking by faith and not by sight" can so often get hijacked in my own life because of screens. Screens are artificial, what I see on them is not actually happening in my real life right then-+even if it is real, quality content from someone else's life...like you, who am incredibly grateful for! 💖 But if I don't keep a strong boundary on it, what I see on a screen, even good things, can distract me from walking by faith in the present moment and reality of who I actually am and what is actually happening in my world. So He is walking me through establishing stronger boundaries and I am discovering exactly what you said: am instant clarity, even awareness of who God is, who I am in Him, and what He is doing and wanting to do through and around me in this gorgeous, priceless gift called "Life". May He continuously bless you to swim against the current and find the beauty "Christ in you, the Hope of glory" every day--right where YOU are. You are a tremendous blessing! Psalm 103 💖
