Leimert Park (Los Angeles neighborhood) has some great Spanish Revival condos from the 1920s, cute shapes, and soo stylish with gorgeous tile and little iron railings on stuff.

As an LA native, thank you James! These are exact apts we have riddled in spots exactly like this lot in residential neighborhoods, and you're right it fits so much better as a whole picture. I agree! I never play people in Del sol until they’re super rich because those huge starter lots are just weird. And it winds up feeling like a really empty neighborhood.

Love it! This apartment style is called a “Dingbat” and is especially common all throughout Los Angeles. They were built during the building boom of the 1950’s and 60’s. There are so many whimsical designs around that are just amazing. I live in one myself. Can’t wait for the pack to come out, I’ll be going dingbat crazy!

@@rosameryrojas-delcerro1059 Now that I am working with housing I get it. Apartments are meant to be blank slates customized by the occupant which is why stark white or that beige color is common. It's also easier to restore walls back to white or beige when people move out and get back to the base unoccupied generic look. Also, if someone punches a hole in the drywall it's way easier to color match that repair back to beige or white.

These apartments style you built has an interesting history! They were built as cheap temporary housing but ended up sticking around for a lot longer than Intended. But now they're not up to code due to not being earth quake safe and lacking windows In certain rooms. Lovely build!

As an American who has lived in several apartments, I gotta say you got a lot of things right. The different times of updating kitchens, the super unequal sizing of bedrooms, the popcorn ceilings. The only thing I personally think is "incorrect" is the overhead lighting in the living space. Dining and kitchen, yes, but in the living room, you're almost always expected to provide your own lighting. Usually one of the light switches is connected to certain outlets. Here we just have the Auto Light setting

This style of mid century apartment building with the overhang over the parking are called Dingbats, popular as an affordable housing solution across the Sun Belt states in the US. Often they were built in low density residential neighbourhoods, replacing single family homes, and often given ridiculous grandiose names written in cursive on the side of the building.

Where I live in LA, there's about 50 apartment buildings that look like this around me. My brother in law used to live in an apartment building that had a very similar courtyard, pool and all. You really hit the nail on the head with this build. Can't wait to play with this when For Rent comes out!

Native Californian here who lived in one of those 40s style apartment buildings for years: those hedges you placed at 38:15 is very accurate to how the outside of the buildings often look!! You changed it but still, you definitely would've been accurate if you'd kept them.

I think it would be fun for one of the builds for the let’s play if you started with a bunch of unfurnished apartments, just kitchens and bathrooms like you normally get with most unfurnished places and then when tenets move in you add the furniture to the place to match who’s moving in.

I lived in LA for ten years, when you began to describe an old LA apartment, this was exactly what I thought of. Courtyard, pool, under unit carports leading to the most used entrance door. You did a fantastic job capturing this. Car culture capital!

13:58 there is certain trims for the half walls, where sims cant put anything onto. They arent as sleek and flat as the ones you are using, but they get rid of the trouble of either you having to place something or the sims using them as a surface. Personally i think they do look pretty plus can give a bit more of a divided look but still make it look open

I've made 2 micro apartments because of you. One is inspired by cheap new york style apartments with 6 units and the other is inspired by japanese micro apartments with 8 units. I just can't wait for them to be real functional apartments for my sims.

James a tip for cheap American apartments, the lights tend to be 1 ceiling light in the kitchen, no lights in the living area (buy your own floor light), wall light above mirror in bathroom, and the bedrooms range from either having 1 ceiling light to none (buy floor lamp)

when the new xpac drops these are going to be such good starter apartments. Already got a couple of aspiring actor sims with part time coffee shop jobs as they work through the uni xpac before becoming the next Del Sol Valley "ratpack" scenario planned in my head. Will obviously torture them with my horrible decisions just for character building of course. Great stuff James!

this video is so fun. all of the apartments are cool and quirky in their own way. It would be a lot of fun to see a renovation of all the apartments at some point, as if the sims that moved in upgraded the furnishings

Definitely my favorite rental lot so far! Great job, if I get the new expansion, I'm sure I'll end up using this, since it's, well for one, a very nice build, but also, not too cluttered, which is always great for performance, but it's not too empty and doesn't feel too artificial, which is great!!!

This is a great build, representing central and Southern California 1960s apartment buildings. I think I might bring this into my test save unfurnished and do it up myself based on an apartment building I lived in when I was young. james mentioning the plates on the shelves reminded me of an old save where my sim decided to stop mid-white cake making and put the bowl on a shelf in the nursery that no one could get to. it stayed there for ages without me even noticing so everyone was uncomfortable when they went to check the baby. it wouldn’t let me move it either, i ended up having to just delete the whole shelf. i’m mad all over again about it.

I’ve lived in apartments all my life and usually the apartments look different, and there’s usually a one bedroom downstairs second floor 2 bedroom,3rd floor 3,4 bedroom, some have showers, others have both, all different really unless it’s like a building of 30 or something, this was a great build, can’t wait to see the lp.

I'm totally downloading this but am going to redo one and make it a really run-down, moldy, cheap, slum lord owned apartment for one of my new "apartment" story lines. I will also make one a really high class refurbished one, and of course leaving one just like it is. I attempted to make a similar build and couldn't make it look right, so of course, I came to your page to see if you could give me some inspiration, and just like always you didn't disappoint!!!! Fun fact, this style of apartments with the livable area overhanging the parking spaces below is called a “dingbat”! They were very popular in LA because they were cheap to build and saved space by utilizing the vertical space on a lot

I've built a 6 unit apartment complex on that lot too! Mine is modeled after one of the dorms on my university campus in Southern California. I've been wanting to build dingbats like this too. Also I'm so stoked about the idea of the cork floor in white to mimic popcorn ceilings. So many possibilities now... (I build a lot of literal/authentic midcentury stuff)

I love this, i've been window shopping around for old la apartments so this felt very familiar. Definitely reminiscent of 50s styles and la dingbat apartments, as far as 30s apartments go, they do exist in LA but theyre much much smaller. Some i've seen have defunct "closets" in the middle of the living rooms--they used to have murphey beds! Very fun to think about all these things in the sims! :D

You could always make one of the front units a maisonette where it has a top floor room, and the other part of the top floor is just a small one-room-apartment. That mixes it up a bit!
