I'm a huge fan of your conversions. It's amazing how you manage to open up the space while also keep the character and charm of the original intact. IMHO the latter is what truly sets you apart on another level. You don't just rearrange everything but keep and enhance as much as possible. Also, I really loved this bigger space which shares a similar theme in terms of space restrictions.

Hello Gemma. I follow you from Australia. I love reading, watching, learning about tiny homes and reimagining difficult spaces. Here in Australia, in suburbs close to the city, we have beautiful large old buildings in lovely established gardens. I am always so disappointed when they just pull them down and build another uninspiring block of 26 units. So unsustainable and huge carbon footprint. I wish I could buy them and employ you to transform the building, with clever extensions, to make multi generational and purposeful apartments - for single people, couples or families. This way the vernacular of the areas is not lost, or architectural history is not lost and building are reused and repurposed. I just see how this makes sense but it’s always about economics and profit. Anyway, I love what you do and am always sooooo excited to see another one of your designs. You are just wonderful.

Another Aussie here. And ditto on your comments
@spiralpython19895 ай бұрын
@@MsForwardthinkerand another! I live in a regional town, and am seeing the beautiful vernacular buildings being removed for more featureless big city buildings when with some forethought, talented vision and consideration or the future users of the spaces, we could have some exceptional buildings to house multiple families/ generations/ and a mix of singles, share housing and communal spaces… more in keeping with the ‘country town’ ethos, and where a real village atmosphere could be nurtured… but no. Smaller plots, separate, uninspiring dwellings with massive footprints to house increasingly isolated people and no useable outdoor space. You would think that 5 decades after criticism of “little boxes made of ticky tacky, and they all look just the same…” we might have moved beyond this horrid version of suburbia. But no, our planning departments and local authorities seem to favour the estate developers who only care about the immediate profits…. I want a Gemma Wheeler derelict cottage update home.

Stunning work Gemma! I am an urban planner from Germany and always very inspired by your work, also the principle of transforming the old and existing with precise modern interventions applies well to urban spaces too. In one of the current projects i am working on there are some small houses that used to be attached to the old city wall, and i believe your designs have opened my eyes so much to see a lot of potential in these. Thank you for your amazing contributions to a new way of building! You are truly a spatial genius. Much love

What a light-filled dream of a house. Amazing how dysfunctional it was before, but then along comes Gemma to transform it into this entire environment of spaces that provide peace, privacy, and ample socializing. Bravo again! I love the idea of bringing the garden closer into the view of the inhabitants via the courtyard, and the creation of the courtyard. It’s so beautiful and I hope the family is happy there. I’ve commented on this design before, but just viewed the video again, and there was just so much more to admire… this design keeps growing on me. If I had a house to redesign I would hire you in a heartbeat.

I absolutely love this. I'm a fan of both modern style and old buildings and this is such a great combo. Your videos make me wish I had stuck with my architecture/interior design career. I did get to renovate (complete gut) the 200 yr old stone farmhouse my family had been in for nearly 90 years. I loved every (stressful) minute of it! It was such fun to design every single corner of the house to my own preference. That was 7 years ago and I had to sell the house to move closer to my daughter but I was proud to list it rather than selling it cheap in the condition in which I received it. Look forward to more of your videos.

I see Gemma, I click! Having watched it now, this is really an awkward space to begin with, isn’t it? So awkward I’m having a hard time visualizing it. You’ve done an amazing job as always. The only concern that came up for me as I watched would be how the raised section of the roof would perform in serious rain or snow. I’m not sure how much snow that area of France might get. Otherwise, yes, opening that space literally up gives so much more useable space! Creative as always!
@gemmawheeler6 ай бұрын
Great thought! The client had the same question. Flat roofs when built properly are never fully flat, they’re always laid to a fall meaning they have the capacity to drain. Then it’s about careful detailing to ensure there are no weak spots and all the correct size drainage.

Ohhh Gemma, this one is a show-stopper for me! How you managed to make four SUITES in that house while not giving a bit of character up is so amazing to me. I am not good at imagining something new from nothing, so I am always so impressed by how you come up with ways to live a 21st century life in often 19th century houses. I have always wanted to live in an old house like that, but there just aren’t that many here in Canada that look like these stone cottages; they are just so much more prevalent in the UK and Europe.

Wished I could have been a member of the family that was to move in once the build was complete, the transformation of the interior is hard to imagine without actually seeing it. Desks. Please add more desks to your bedroom designs. I get the allure of huge unobstructed window-walls and the large beds even for children's rooms. But a child no matter the age needs a desk. For schoolwork, for drawing, for a monitor to be placed on. Other than that: very nice conversion that keeps the important old features like the visible stone walls and fire places :)
