I actually upgraded my hunstman V2 with GMK keycaps and lubed the stock switches and stabilizers. It feels pretty damn decent, works with the rest of my razer ecosystem, and has dedicated media keys- that's hard to find on higher end custom board kits. it's the best keyboard for me- a gamer, that really only types youtube comments.

To be fair the huntsman is a very different keyboard to the blackwidow. It's an optical keyboard so there isn't that much different to do. It also uses stabilisers that are cherry style and has a standard bottom row.

Sound portfolio is completely personal preference though. The black switches are quieter, but the clacky sound of the Razer keyboard is a classic. I personally still use a Razer blackwidow v1 Chroma TKL, and just bought new PBT keycaps for it. It renewed and brought my keyboard back to life, and I still enjoy the clacky keyboard. I've used the linear switches, and I couldn't get use to it when typing quickly because I wasn't able to get the same cues as from the clicky keyboard from the clicky typing.

Hotswappable PCBs allow for solderless builds. Razor never uses them because they don't expect people to want to change the "most amazing, fastest switch" to something else. For the solder thing, I believe Glarses or Hamaji have made joke tutorials that are somewhat helpful, but for the full tutorial, I would just search for one. Maybe Squashy will make one. Who knows?

i agree that MOST of their products are overpriced BUT the Razer Viper Mini is a great mouse for 30 dollars. PTFE Feet, Optical Clicks, Great M1 and M2 clicks, a decent cable, a satisfying scroll wheel, and a good sensor. So while yes most razer products are overpriced garbage that will break in a year, the razer viper mini is built different.

I'd choose the custom one if there were more TKL options, as I can't miss the function keys as a programmer and I hate layering. Buying a "gaming" keyboard is just cheaper.

Interesting that you hate layers when one of if not the core group that pushed small form factor keyboard into the mainstream is programmers. Small boards like the HHKB (aka Happy Hacking Keyboard) were designed by programmers and computer scientists to enhance workflow by minimising effort. I think layers are a bit more intuitive to people who grew up playing a lot of games consoles, because controllers don't have many buttons and holding one to access other commands on the others is common, whereas from childhood PC people are used to full sized layouts with a designated key for every input. Definitely something you can get used to of course if there's any impetus or desire to. Personally I now find function keys cumbersome in the vast majority of situations purely because of the need to move the hand from the home row.
