For me it always comes down to partitions being why I manual on void or arch or Gentoo. The moment you don't want just the standard efi and one drive ext4 it gets messy. I mean even without archinstall, installing arch is really not *that* hard. The documentation is out there and most of the steps are more or less trivial, if you know a bit about the command line. The first time I installed arch I did without archinstall and I am honestly glad I did it like that, because it teaches a few things that are extremely helpful to fix problems. Like working in the command line when it is all you have, chrooting into a system when something is broken, using fstab correctly, etc.

I started trying out Linux since the early 2000s. I was only distro hopping and nothing ever worked until I learned about Ubuntu (I guess around ~2007). Ubuntu was then the first Linux that replaced Windows as my main OS. But around 2011 I was really fed up with the 6 months update cycle, having your complete system and every program updated at once and always being dependant on the choices Ubuntu made. So I looked into rolling distros. Tried Gentoo first, but then stuck with Arch, because binary packages were just easier to handle on my then single core CPU than compiling everything. Still I like Ubuntu for it's positive impact in pushing Linux and I continue to use it for home / internet servers.

Arch is now the primary replacement for windows. It's so user friendly, it is comparable to windows 95 back in the day from an ease of use standpoint. With plasma 6 there is officially no reason to run windows anymore. As Microsoft cracks down on freedom of speech and use in their operating system, more and more will switch over.

On the arch iso, you need to edit the pacman.conf to enable the parallel downloads first - it’s off by default. Also you skip the sound server selection on the video and you could skip the root password section like in Debian installs.

I never tried Arch before the install was simplified, still feel braindead when I tried it lol And thats not to say itnis complex even, just so different from what I am used to from 20years playing with Linux distros.
@prima_ballerina4 ай бұрын
Hm. I don't quite get your point. Install scripts have been around for years. Now they included one of those on the iso. So what? *shrug* I never heard anyone saying they use Arch because it is "hard to install". Anyone I know who does use Arch, does it to have a (almost) completely custom system. I tried Gentoo first, but back then I still had a single core CPU. After my PC compiled for 24 hours I realized I had made some config errors and would have to compile again. Then my choice fell on Arch :-D It still puzzles me why people want to use Arch when they use an install script anyway. They're missing out on the main "selling point" of that distro :-) Btw.: I always thought "I use Arch btw." is just a meme because people using Arch were going on peoples nerves being so vocal about it and not because Arch users themselves feel or are considered "superior". But I must admit I'm not really huge into all this meme / "modern" internet stuff anyway - I hang around a lot in retro computer forums :-)

Arch was never hard to install. It had an installer before, then that went away, now it has one again. Who cares? It's not hard with or without one. Installing Gentoo also isn't hard. They even have a musl eselect profile now. Only configuring the kernel takes a bit, since the documentation is pretty shitty. Otherwise it's so easy, like you wouldn't believe. And LFS is just a time consuming manual task. You follow the book. Most of it is looking at the compiler. And again you have to configure the kernel. None of this is particularly hard since the internet exists. There are guides for everything. Edited to not be part of the heart sticker inflation.
@LowTechLinux4 ай бұрын
I think it more comes down to time consumption. Compiling and building stuff isn't hard, but can be very time consuming and also depends on the machine it's being done on
