LESSON SUMMARY
In a solo piano performance, two sections are absolutely critical-how you start and how you end! For this reason, professional pianists are shrewd to give their audiences a little something extra at a song’s conclusion. In this lesson, Jonny will teach you how to leave your audience wanting more with “The Magic Run.” This ultimate piano run provides the perfect closure to any tune by captivating your listeners’ attention to the very last note. This technique also works great for song transitions and soloing.

Hi from a full time jazz and classical pianist .. Really fun run ! I like the rhythmic asymmetry ( group of 6, then 5). I think a certain amount of asymetry draws in the listeners ear : just as a certain amount of dissonance does. I just sat down at the piano and am trying this out in a downward 6 then 5 pattern ( though with slightly different intervals) and am liking the sound. This concept sounds REALLY pretty (upwards and downwards) with the melodic minor scale ! Thanks for the idea Jonny !

Would it be a good idea to mention that just to get this fingering" in your hands " its a good idea to learn to tap the sequencing away from the piano on a table top , tell the students to tap those finger patterns over and over until you can at least physically do the task , they will find it VERY difficult , just tapping right hand from thumb to pinky sequentially , smoothly is very tricky and can take weeks of practice

What scale do you play on a half diminished chord?
@seanonel
@seanonel Жыл бұрын
If I were playing in C for and my half-diminished was a dm7b5 for example, I would start at D playing the C Ionian (or in this case D Dorian) scale BUT making sure to include the non-diatonic notes from the half-diminished chord ie all the white notes plus the Ab. Johnny will probably tell you a very different way, but that works nearly all the time for me, and I don't have to memorise anything specific. Let me know what you think...

@@frederickkk1985 Very welcome! I hope it works for you. I was getting frustrated with people always telling me to play the diminished scale; but was it half-whole or whole-half? Through experimentation, I found this. Thanks for appreciating my unorthodox reply!
