I was EXACTLY the same way! I used to not be able to enter any Halloween store without closing my eyes and letting my parents lead me through and past all the scary decorations. And I'd cover my eyes going out. But now it's a tradition to go to a Spirit Halloween to actively check out all their spooky display decor.

I used to fear multi-floored building because they had a "T" for "Térreo" (You've probably noticed by now, but if you haven't, I'll reveal it at the end), I have no idea why though. Now for the reveal! Drum roll please... ... ... No drum roll? Ok. One of my most distinct halloween memories as a kid is asking my mom while trick-or-treating if we could stop at duchess and get soda when we were done, and I was SO sad about that for a while when she said no. We then pulled into a duchess parking lot and went inside and I was genuinely super confused, then she ordered my brother and I actual food (and soda) from duchess, and that- that made my little 12 year old day, even more than the candy did

Halloween for me definitely became much more lame as I got older especially since I moved and the place I live now has hardly any trick or treating or decorations at all. Nowadays I either just watch a scary movie and/or go hang out as some supposedly haunted location in the middle of the night. Where I used to live however was a Halloween haven; practically every house had so many cool decorations, there would be so many nice people handing out sweets and we’d go out with a group of like 30 kids to raid them. I’ll always remember the time where me and my friends were giving out sweets but instead of them being actually sweets they were brussel sprouts wrapped in foil.

Lately, I’ve been thinking about interesting ways to give out candy (not that that’s something I can reasonably do from an apartment.) I’ve mainly thought about being the Bowser Space of houses, where I ask to borrow the Trick-or-Treaters bags/sacks/baskets and spin a wheel to decide wether I give them candy or take some away. I find the idea of a 6 year old walking up to my house expecting to get some candy only to leave with half as much candy as they arrived, or someone that got started early in the evening losing a ton of candy to a Candy Revolution while the other kid that just started gets a huge head start for the night absolutely hilarious.

There’s one Halloween night I will never forget. Me and my sister were out trick or treating with our mom, and we came across this house that had really big trumpet flowers. They were kinda cool and my mom really wanted one so she could do the thing where you put a flower and stem in water and then you can…grow your own?? Idk, I don’t know anything about farming, but my mom assured me this was a thing. The problem was, this house had its lights off and doors locked. So we couldn’t get candy from them and my mom couldn’t ask if she could have one of their flowers. So instead, we syphoned the true spirit of “trick or treat” and decided since they didn’t give us treat we would trick them. We just grabbed a knife, chopped off one of the flowers and ran away. I never went out trick or treating, but I did participate in Carol Singing (in cold, snowy, Ukrainian January) and the people who lived in my village were so nice and loved us so much, every single house gave us a lot of candy, food, and MONEY!! When we started sorting the stuff, each of the kids had like at least 50 hryvnas! (Which now is like $2 but back in the day you could buy like a Lego set with that, so it was still pretty cool). So, because of that story, I tell everyone that I got rich doing Christmas trick or treating 😊
