Him and Rick Springfield did a rock and roll road trip together and they are cool as hell together. Sammy has no problem with rick. He always said that Rick was better looking. Even Rick Springfield said man you sang that song so much better than me Sammy, and that's when Sammy said yeah but you were the better looking guy. It doesn't matter to me I wrote the song, I performed the song first and I'm getting paid for you performing and selling that song Rick Springfield so keep it up....

Springfield had nothing to do with the musical arrangement and played none of the instruments on his version. Neil "Spider" Giraldo (Pat Benatar's guitarist/husband) played all the guitars on Rick's version. He's told the story many times about his manager calling him up and telling him to show up at the recording studio to lay down some vocals. He went in, sang the song over all the other tracks that had already been recorded, and left. Next thing he knew, he had another hit, following on the heels of "Jessie's Girl."

This is funny but there's a lot of truth to it: Springfield was a huge Soap Opera heartthrob who had musical talent as well. He WAS better looking than Sammy - well he was better looking than just about anyone on the planet if you polled the girls back in that era - and his version coincided with the advent of MTV.

Ok the reason Rick's version was so much better is Neil Giraldo's arrangement and guitar playing on it with the rest of Pat Benatar's band. Sammy's version is clunky and kinda boring, Rick's pulsed along with that great rhythm guitar and drums. Neil was a kick-ass arranger and guitar player - great solo on that track and on Jessie's Girl, great rhythm guitar too. I don't think he got enough credit for how well that album did (Rick's Working Class Dog). My 2 cents.
@vanshipman7 жыл бұрын
northeastrocker Agreed👍🎸 That solo was minimal and perfect, so cool. Jessie’s Girl solo was more technical and perfect for the song too. Neil is a great player for sure. Tim Pierce did amazing stuff for Rick as well, what a monster.

Look folks , in the 70s Heavy Metal wasn't really mainstream . Sammy's version of this song clearly is too Pop Metal sounding really . Pop Metal in the 70s was like non-existant on the Radio . Punk Rock , Hard Rock , Country Rock , and Disco were the main stays of success in the 70s . So that's why Sammy's version didn't catch on . Sammy's version of this song was in a grey area . Rick Springfield came along in the 80s and teamed up with Pat Benatar's Guitarist Neil Giraldo . I believe Neil probably had this song in his pocket for a while and wanted to remake it with Pat eventually . He got with Rick instead to make a new version of it . Neil was big on taking other Artists songs and making new versions of them . But Neil and Rick got together and really added some Rockabilly Blues nuances to this song on Guitar . Rick really put more sexuality , passion , and intensity into every word of this song when he sings it . Sammy sang this song a little more monotone and straight forward . Rick was right tho , he was better looking than Sammy in the 80s . Good looking Artists always sell more than semi-attractive Artists .

IF I remember correctly after reading Pat Benetars book she was also given a chance at the song and passed on it 4 . Sammy and Rick both sound great ( but like most (not all) aging singers they drop the keys of there songs (making them easier to sing and more ballzee ) 5.
