I've been sleeping on the Benson Preamp

I've had the original on my board for years. Pretty much every other pedal on that board has been swapped out at some point but the Benson isn't going anywhere. Impossible to get a bad or unusable sound out of it. From beautiful cleans sounds to blown out fuzz destruction. It does it all. Icing on the cake... It loves to stack. Some great content of late. Much appreciated.

I have the original and I love it. I run it with just an edge of breakup kinda sound and push it with a wren and cuff caprid for heavier sounds. This way, I can run my amp cleaner for more clarity with my reverb and delay. I tried quite a few different preamp and overdrive pedals with this setup and the benson did the job far better than the others. It really is a great preamp.

I've been doing this for a while too, but I've had no luck with muff-style fuzz or distortion going into it. It ends up muddy and too compressed. It takes all of my overdrives and fuzz faces extremely well though. I've also got the Citadel from Electronic Audio Experiments, plus the model feT on the way. The Citadel seems to be able to handle any of my gain pedals, so I'm curious if it's really the Benson or am I just doing something wrong?

The problem is different guitars and amps can impact the chosen drive and it’s a lot of trial and error determining what drives stack best and whether they play nicely with other effects in the chain.

I have been looking for years for a versatile "overdrive" or "bite" after the fuzz and the benson preamp is the best for me and it responds well to the volume knob. Love it.

I've had the original for years. Pretty tempted to get a Germanium version to A/B. The Germanium Boost is also pretty cool.

What category do you put this pedal in? Like an Origin Effects (like RD Compact -> Amp-Like) - or "only" an overdrive pedal?
