This is a technique that prisoners of the Gulag system would use in Siberia, usually for lighting cigarettes but also for making fire if needed. I've tried this with char cloth and cotton balls in -15F weather and it works well, just have to preheat the roll a little more and be quick about keeping it hot. You've given a good demonstration of the technique, and I'm glad you came back around to it and figured it out!

Having made easy work of using wood ashes with cotton, Bounty paper towels, and jute fibers, I'm looking forward to trying something completely different this spring/summer. The stem fibers of dried green Stinging Nettle. There's a guy on here, that takes growing Stinging Nettle, dries it for just two hours, before working it into a mat, and easily gets it to take a spark from flint and steel. I figure if it is that receptive to igniting, the fire roll technique could possibly be feasible. It would also eliminate the need to acquire manufactured products to make fire rolls.

David I tried charred 100% cotton balls and they work good with chert and steel. Sometimes it is a little harder for the charred cotton ball to catch and keep a spark but when it does and upon blowing on the initial ember it creates a really big and longer lasting ember than char cloth. Try it sometime if you have not already. God Bless.

Two things that are already in the kit 👍 nicely done ✔ I wonder if charcloth will fire up in a paper towel? The pretighten and roll flip really improve the process.

Great video, will have to give it a try using char cloth instead of ashes. Went back and watched your video on making char cloth, ment to comment on it when I watched it the first time. When I started doing rendezvous and living history events over 40 years ago, I did a lot of experimenting with char cloth, best material I've found is plain old cotton work gloves, nice heavy weave that won't fall apart, and the fleece inner surface catches a spark like nothing else. I don't put my tins in fire, I put them on the coals after the fire dies down, at home, I put them in the charcoal grill after I'm done cooking, never had brittle cloth. I have 3 different tins, depending on how much I want to make, a small pomade tin about 1/2 the size of yours, a 35mm bulk film container that holds about 3 times as much and a polishing compound can if I want to make a big batch for teaching scouting and school groups. I've taught a lot of other reenactors and almost every fire starting competition I've watched over the last 25 years has been won by someone I've taught. Keep up the great work.

Have you ever ignite a fire roll with just preheats.. with just forward rolls? Does it need to move back and forth, or can you just move forward with enough patience?
@DavidWestBgood2ppl2 жыл бұрын
Forward rolls will usually ignite tinders, but the roll will be so tight that the ember will go out. Sometimes you can save it by pulling it apart, but usually that just breaks up the internal coal which also makes it go out. I have ignited terry cloth 3 times in a row with just forward rolls, 60 forward rolls, the first 2 ignitions went out and the 3rd just barely caught and finally grew into a good usable ember. T-shirt material is another good example of one that will only ignite with forward rolls, but will go right back out because it gets so hard that it can not be loosened quickly enough.
@FelixImmler2 жыл бұрын

@@DavidWestBgood2ppl Milkweed has become very rare due to years of people deliberately eradicating it. That's why monarch butterflies are so scarce nowadays. There is a movement to reintroduce it, if you can get ahold of some seed it would be good to plant it where it won't be disturbed.
