I've Been Trying to Find One For Years! Let's Fix It! Yes, it's been literally 4 years that I've been trying to buy one of these limited edition PS4 Pro game consoles. The seller said the console powers up but won't show anything on the screen, however, when I powered it up it never went to the white light. I spent $592 on this broken console from eBay (yes, probably more than it is worth) because I really wanted to make a video trying to fix it, so I hope you enjoy it.

i do that myself too. i have taken apart every single device i ever owned, both working and broken, and i still do. I also like to use parts from broken devices to fix the working ones when _they_ get broken.

If you know someone with a resin printer, you might be able to print out some replacement parts. There are dye kits for resin so you can color match it.

I dont mean to be that guy but color matching is really tough, you have to have access to tons of colors to make the exact specific tone they used

Managed to get one of these 500M PS4s and was like a giddy school kid. It's a bit scratched up now but didn't want to let it sit in a box unused forever! Love the transparent light section when the blue power light comes on, it looks awesome!

i like vintage stuff but anything produced after 1990 called special edition is in my opinion not special at all. 1 no originality at all, possibly a color change which customers can pick better themselves on aliexpress 2 making +1000 special edition units doesn t cost manufacturer a cent, especially if it s only a color change 3 not even built to last over 2 years, manual says often don t use more than 4 hours in one sitting 4 50% of the sales are not even sold to genuine customers at first sale. a retail associate to a friend for resale for profit and usually a rich guy pays more just to have it earlier. sometimes they are keep just to brag around friends.

I worked at Microcenter back when the Apple //c was still popular. We had a guy bring in his "Roach Mobil Home", for the free mother board upgrade because all you had to claim was you got a faster modem and the original motherboard could not support those serial speeds. It was INFESTED!!!!! Rod hit one with freeze spray and ..... well they did have to have the shop treated for roaches, cause they did not like that blast of cold!!! more to story but you get the idea. Thanks for the memory, and a chance to tell the story again.

Yeah it's safe. As long as it's a really high percentage of alcohol (I only use 99.9% IPA) then it evaporates and leaves nothing behind.

Had someone told me a couple of years ago that I would be following a couple of guys on the tube doing board level repairs on electronics I would have laughed in their face. Yet here we are. I understand the yuck factor but kinda laugh a little when you pull out the gloves, I worked on locomotives for a living and never wore gloves, not understating your desire to remain yuck free it is just amusing to me... lol. Back in the day when "rent to own" electronics was a much bigger thing (CRT TV's and VCRs in particular) it was very common to find roaches and other bugs living inside of repossessed units. Many stores would fumigate all repossessed electronics prior to offering them for sale again.

Great work Steve. Make sure to peel the plastic off if you plan to use it, I've had stuff like that left on where it just stuck to the console and removing it was a pain with some damage left over. Peel your stuff people lol.

Agreed. Most of the plastic films applied don't expect you to keep it on the product's surface for long time, especially those often exposing to sunlight, otherwise it would melt and become very sticky, some would break apart and fuse itself onto the surface.

I agree with this especially if it has any kinda chrome accents or designs on it . I have a like new Halo 4 Xbox 360 controller I bought on eBay it still had the little sticker with the hand pointing to the X guide button I peeled it off it ripped off some of the chrome design off the controller my heart literally sank…. It’s not to bad but I collect limited / rare consoles regardless of the brand i always buy minty / like new devices / accessories so I can display them properly together I’m a gamer at heart these consoles make me happy to display them or use them .

For bug infested motherboard, if the smell doesn't go away, try leaving the board or hardware in a bag full of camphor and handful of dry rice for about 24 hours and you'll notice that ugly smell will be gone. You'll still need to clean the board with isopropyl alcohol later

Instead of using compressed air, you can pick up a little air compressor cheap. I got an old air mattress air pump and it works brilliantly for a $2 investment. If you look, you can actually find these little air compressors at thrift stores quite frequently. They sell similar ones for PC cleaning for like $25 - $50, easily pays for itself after 5+ cans of air.

you should get an ultra sonic cleaner. While I would clean up the obvious manually first, afterword the ultrasonic would remove the stench easily.

I’ve actually taken the colored fat PS2s from Japan and swapped an American motherboard in, matched the laser bios to the original one from the Japanese drive with FreeMCboot and the lens changer program. Reason I mention this is that I have a translucent ocean blue model that’s see through like this where I did that swap 😎👍🏻

Bro reading your comment, makes me think that maybe you could help me... See I've got a ps1 audiophile console, everything seems to be in order, but the disk drive doesn't spin... I've already replaced the cd reader unit. But that didn't fix the problem, it does go into the memory card manager (with all functions working) and cd player menu (not responding) please bro i hope you can help me fix this priceless unit

@@mcbaksteen Hmmm. I actually have one as well that I picked up cheap, very first models. It needed no work, the only other PS1 I worked on was a 7 something revision where it was dirty, if I’m not mistaken the drive is “dead” in that too and I never got around to fixing it. If you’ve already replaced the laser / drive, then I’d assume it’s either a motherboard issue or a power issue.

It's crazy what cleaning can do to your old consoles. Your videos have inspired me to venture into this myself and I got a lot of supplies for x-mas to get started. Cleaned out my old Game Boy Color and replaced 2 batteries in my Pokemon games (although I need some practice with soldering, haha!). Cleaning my Game Boy Color did wonders to it and the sound/power work better than ever. One question, I have the same digital microscope you have, but I have found myself struggling with holding down the mother boards of the cartridge games. Are there any small clips you would recommend to help hold down while I am soldering and won't damage the board? Feels like I always need a 3rd arm for these things 😂

Although it still worked pretty much flawlessly I cleaned my PS3 last year for the first time. After 12 and a half years it was somewhat of a miracle that it hadn't catched fire.

Get a cheap air compressor and a blow gun attachment. 100x better than any duster.

If you have one, you could just use a dishwasher with regular dishwasher tabs to clean the motherboard. After that you just have to rinse the board with distilled water. It works very well

Yes, for the love of god, get one and do this to the board. Please, for your own good dude, ultrasonic cleaners are literally mandatory for this type of job in the scale he does.

I definitely don't have as many as he has but i've only gotten two roach infested consoles in the three years i've been reselling.

I briefly used a couple ultrasonic cleaners as an attempt to upgrade from this type of cleaning. For my shell, pcb, wiring, (most) game discs and cases, hard drives (cover breather hole), etc cleaning of both consoles and pc components, and their accessories, I went further to plain water and detergent soak, with mechanical cleaning using a soft brush instead. Soak/rinsed with distilled water, force-air dried, then fan-dried further. I'm still surprised about how Steve "cleans" all of his consoles on video - I'd still consider them dirty, and it's why I tried ultrasonic cleaners. Ultrasonics are an okay-ish no-effort solution though, to save time, and better than the cleaning shown here. That said, some ultrasonic cleaners can damage boards/components, so the general consensus is to NOT use electronics in the cheap machines that can have "hot spots", and I'd verify sweeping functionality of the generic cleaners before trusting them. Of course this will also provide better cleaning, even if just used for plastic shells. Many components shouldn't even be in an ultrasonic cleaner - the soak method works fine on them. Many also state that you could fracture bonding wires or solder joints by using them, but I wouldn't have anything to back up their claims, but I can see both as plausible. By skipping the ultrasonic, you also don't need to over-soak a part that has factory stickers, of which many will lift off or lose their printing after a few minutes in a liquid, and even faster with an alcohol-based cleaning. Ultrasonics and a solvent are great for removing flux though, including anything under chips. Alcohol and a brush is generally fine, but not perfect. Of course if there's stickers involved, probably best to still keep it out of an ultrasonic cleaner, if you want them preserved. I like my 10-30 year old parts to come out looking like new, and if they existed this long, I don't want to be the one to destroy their originality. :) @@fuzzyturtlez8994 Get a couple small-medium sized plastic storage containers (1-2 gallons of liquid is good), a cheap 1.1-gallon water distiller, and an oil-less air compressor, or similar, and you can get your retro console equipment extremely clean with things you likely have around the home already. It's a little easier having a utility sink and countertop space to do it all at, but you could make do with any surface as long as you're okay with carrying the tub(s) of water around to dump/fill. You largely just need to get it clean, then use distilled water to remove any minerals and detergent remnants from the device before moving onto drying it. Forced-air will help push stuff out from under BGA chips for quicker drying. If rinsed property, there should never be any mineral/water spots, even if you didn't use forced-air. For certain things, it'd also be good to pick up some correct lubricants, for things like optical-drive-tray gears or spindle motors. Even lubing things like the NES cartridge-slot spring can quiet that action down. If you clean cds/dvds with the same setup, most can be cleaned under detergent water without an issue, but certain (rarely) labels will start to bubble or come off if left for too long (hours typically). Plastic disc cases can be cleaned just fine, although a pain to dry (I have a drying rack to hang/dry 36 cases at a time). For cleaning moving parts like fans, drive motors, hard drives, I'd pass on cleaning those beyond a wipe-down, unless you learn what not to do.

I bought two of these lightly used a few months after they had released. The price still was around retail so I took the chance. Sold one a few months later for what both costed me so I ended up with a free 500 million edition that I still use as my main PS4 to this day. It's really beautiful.

I know you probably wont read my comment but I have really good tip for you. I saw u used a toothbrush or something like that to clean the dust from the fan. I recently discovered that using one of those make-up brushes that women use to apply powder on their cheeks is probably the best stuff there is. It gets everywhere pretty easily and is very effective. If you randomly read this comment consider trying it.

I have that exact stand for my PS4 Pro, just in a smoke color. If you keep an eye on eBay they come up for $20-$30 brand new, and the insert you need would be in it. I’d bet a lot of money that you’d never see the smoke insert once it’s on the console!

The motherboard transplant is awesome, but I can't fathom why you'd use a roach stained one for such a rare special edition. Even sanitizing it, there's still stains that don't come off or go away. I guess you can always swap a clean board in later when you find a match. I guess it just feels wrong to use a worn, damaged piece to fix such an otherwise great condition console. Still, the video was great, as always!

I just put these type of consoles in 2 trash bags and tighten them/tape them down, leave them on my back porch until I get around to cleaning them. If they are alive, just return it. I've never kept one of these consoles with them alive, so idk there.

@tronicsfix- when you have bugs or dirt, why don’t you get in there w a vacuum (maybe w a brush attachment)? That would help keep your mat area and shop clean.
