I ordered a Triumph 400X back in Autumn. I picked her up in the week and this was just a quick intro video going through a few of the details. Trail video to follow.

Anything that brings new, and more importantly young people onto 2 wheels can only be a good thing. Or keeps older people who want to go lighter still riding. Looks great. If Rally Raid get hold of it i can see it being very desirable. Tubeless spokes? Fabulous. Can't believe the price either. Great value. Ride safe 👍

Totally. I think this brings a nice big bike feel without feeling like a big bike. For anyone stepping off a Bonnie or tiger it doesn't actually like a step down if that makes sense, just lighter

Really enjoying the recent workshop/clipboard presentations, comes across well. If using a videographer is costing you money, get a insta 360 x 3 (whatever the current version is) and a small tripod. I use this in my films for "pass bys", probably the easiest thing to edit in the 360 editing suite. It would get the riding shots you showed us here no problem. Can also be used for the occasional bike mounted piece. Pain in the ass as a main camera, but for the odd wow shot great piece of kit.

Thanks, Nathan, fascinating and intriguing. Has all the potential to be a barnstormer if the puzzle pieces all fit without issues. Lovely looking thing; sounds fab, too. Has 'Triumph' written all over it, appearance-wise. I really hope they have a success; it just fires up the market and choice all the more. Puts a fire up the competitions rear echelons, too; which cant be a bad thing. As usual, though, useless to me...like most off-roaders. At 5'4", anything above 210mm seat has me on tiptoes. Not a huge issue on a road-bike but a pain in the Mariah Carey on an off-roader. Hence why the Himmy was such a revelation and proved that they 'could' make O/R machines for shorthouses like me but the manufacturers market just chooses not to. Hey, their loss; my 18grand for a GS is as good as the next bloke but if they're going to consistently make machines I cant use safely, then I'll just spend my money on cigareetes and whisky and wild wild wimmin, instead. Then I'll just waste what's left...😉. Really good to see the bike manufacturers putting in so much effort in all the other areas, though, this being a good example. I am captivated to see what you make of it. Plus, we have come to enjoy a total no-bull and solid service from your fine self, chap, hence, I'm confident your evaluation will be one to trust; albeit more from the perspective of someone who's skillset is morre geared toward off-road analysis. Cheers, bloke, keep smilin'...

Tube type allow you to run lower pressures when needed and in the event you do dent a rim it will still air back up where a tubeless won’t be able to seal the bead. It’s not that hard to change a tube and those who cry for tubeless probably don’t ride off road and should just stick to the cast wheels as they handle better on pavement due to the added rigidity and more positive feedback.

Interesting timing, I've got a test ride on one today. My gut feel is that the 400x is a stylish little thing but setup purely for road work. Just those initial few seconds of off road video of yours seems to show quite limited suspension travel. For off road work I've got to put my money on the new Himalayan, it's got the suspension travel, the bigger front wheel, what I'm sure will be the gruntier engine... so i don't really see them as direct competitors, 400x for road work, Himi for off road. Now lets see if i take that all back after I've actually ridden one of them!

At this price spoked wheel with tubeless tyres would be hard to manage. For a bike enthusiast like me who uses a single bike for all chores, this is it. My only worry would be it's heat management in north Indian dry summer which shoots upto 48-50°C and spans a couple of months. Waiting for your trail/off road ride report nevertheless.

Triumph looked at the market and said if we're going to build a light motorcycle that would appeal to old and new riders we have to pull out all the stops and they did (almost) IMO, someone will make an upswept exhaust system for the scrambler and a different seat and then you will have the perfect mid-sized machine as it is its 95% there it just needs that exhaust junked and a new seat, maybe a new bolt-on rear subframe, suspension travel is 150mm and the bike has 450mm of clearance making the seat very high, you have to lift that boot up high to mount it, I prefer a flat seat, especially for pillions, one thing that gets me is the wonky tank, sloping forward for some reason, but all the cables and wires are hidden, no rectifiers or CDI units bolted to the side of the frame on show, it looks expensive and mostly well thought out, except the seat, tank and exhaust ! PS If you bought this as an off-roader swap out the stock tyres for something more aggressive, something like the Michelin tracker @ £60. Avon does a really good road-legal off-road tyre the TrekRider but it is a bit costly @ £140 a pop for a rear, and I'm sure there will be many belly pans to fit it very soon if not available already via India,

Most people will probably say go with the 400x it's got almost twise the power and what not and that definitly is something I've considered. Having taken it out today I don't think it's what I'm really after. Motor is certainly punchy for a smallish single, you certainly don't have to rev it right out, to make decent progress. The exhaust is surprisingly fruity, I wouldn't want anything louder, quite how it got through noise limits i don't know but it sounds good. Brakes seemed fine, not cutting edge of course but perfectly good enough for what it is. I did pick up a bit of hesitancy of idle and it felt a little as though you had to give it a little more throttle than is normal to get it to pull away but i didn't really get an impression of it being easy to stall. So many modern bikes are leaned way off, Honda are still struggling with this on some bikes so this Triumph is no worse. Seat was not super plush but not a bruiser either. Less positives bits? I'm not a fan of the front end but couldn't really put a finger on it. The bars felt at a slightly odd angle (easy to rectify) but there was a slightly heavy feel to the front as though the tyre was a little oversized, maybe just me. The biggest surprise was how firm the front suspension was though, every little bump was felt which I didn't like much. Perhaps it's me thinking a scrambler style would mean longer travel, supple suspension but it felt, to me, unduly firm and short in travel. I can't imagine this working well off road without some serious re-working.
@nathanthepostman
@nathanthepostman 5 ай бұрын
No it's not just you on that heavy front end feel. I felt the same when I was out on it yesterday. Couldn't put my finger on it either. Same size tyre as 390 Adv (I think) and that feels sharp so all a bit odd. Agree on the firm suspension as well. It doesn't use what it's got that well. It's fine. But I think the aftermarket is going to improve it, but at what cost?

@@nathanthepostman Interesting you felt the same. I still think it looks way better than the CL500 but just that it feels a little mismatched or perhaps a little more chassis development would've made the world of difference. Far, far off being a bad bike and a great basis for modification but as you say, at what cost? I'll be interested to hear what you make of yours with a few more miles covered. Thanks as ever Nathan.

Crazy to think this bike is £5695 in UK whilst in India it's approximately £2695, a £3000 difference..."WHAT FOR" ????
@nathanthepostman

Same reason house prices, food, wages, taxes, operating costs etc are all completely different from here to there. I would imagine compared to the average annual salary the bike is 'cheaper' in the UK than it is in India.

Am I not very bright? Why are upside down forks being fitted to bikes designed to go off road. To me they should be the right way up with fork gaiters.

Not sure to be honest. Maybe a mix of performance gains and cost savings. They're mainly all like it tho. Even the high end stuff on the KTM adventure bikes.

Cheers feller. Exposed forks at a level where stone chips are most likely. Crazy. A Triumph of style over substance. Secondly I am reading the Long Ride Home at the mo - some very funny bits. Thanks for some winter cheer.

It’s a Bajaj, badged as a Triumph. The quality and price combination is what sets India on the path to economic success. What you’re seeing is the reversing of trade, driven by economic reality, and by the fact that the Europeans can no longer bully their way to the top of the economic food chain.

Yes, both versions of Triumph's 400's are decent enough bikes. Just that both are unnecessarily overpriced. Both could and SHOULD be priced £1000 less in the UK. I won't go in to detail as to what it costs Bajaj to make and how much it effectively costs Triumph to get their hands on them. (Looking at what the sell for in India and working out the costs involved will show anyone what those low prices are. Folks do check this out for yourself and work it out). Just that even with production costs, export duty, delivery from India, UK VAT and UK dealer mark ups. What I say is, for an entry level Triumph that Triumph could have used it as a 'fish to catch a Maceral'. That actually in this instance, with all the 100 odd years of loyalty that some UK motorcyclist have shown Triumph over the years. Of previous past times, in great numbers. Perchance even our forebears. Maybe on this occasion, for just a pair of Triumph motorcycles, people can actually be given VFM and indeed get a real bargain. Such a bargain, and seen by all to be a blatant bargain, that further purchases of larger Triumphs would likely be on the cards. And a MASSIVE amount of these two 400's would be sold. UNDERCUTTING in sales a certain 'other' Indian MC manufacturer. (The competition!!). ONE extra MC that Triumph sell in place of one that a rival would likely sell is I suggest the best marketing strategy. ARE you listening Triumph? Triumph UK are just TOO GREEDY, it appears to me they are too greedy all the time. And want to be so. Give us a break Triumph. RECONSIDER your pricing on these two 400 versions!!. SLASH the overpriced price of both versions overnight by £1000. With the offer to all those that have purchased either a 400 Sport or 400 Scrambler a juicy £1000 towards accessories and servicing. So they do not feel they are missing out. Existing Triumph 400 owners and future ones will be blown away. WOW! they and the larger motorcycle community will say. 'WOW!, blimey Triumph' would be a collective held feeling. Along with feeling of goodwill to Triumph. A long lasting one. DO the right thing on this Triumph. A the moment you are missing a good trick. The People of the UK have given your outfit a great deal of loyalty and 'money' over the years. In this instance I say do us this favour. You can do it. I bet many of your existing Triumph customers would very much consider running two Triumphs. EVEN if currently to some existing Triumph owners these 400's will forever be motorcycles made in India by Bajaj. Getting their support as well will indeed show that you have cracked it. Phenomenal UK & EU sales will also show this. Whipping up masses of enthusiasm for your brand throughout the MC community. That later on would far exceed £1000 per sale. You are still making a profit on these 400's at £1000 less. Just don't be too greedy Triumph ALL the time. By occasionally wanting a bit less, you may well obtain more!!! A lot more. Yes then, both the 400 Sport & the 400 Scrambler are motorcycles that I would not mind owning. Decent enough looks, lengthy servicing schedules and performance. A 40hp motorcycle to me is more than good enough for anyone. With one particular addition to both bikes AT the prices I elude to. I would, had I the proper accommodation for one, buy one and try it out. A real good bit of fun. Especially that nice green coloured 400X. Better paint schemes in these two 400's than some other rival manufactures and their latest 452cc motorcycle paint schemes. WHAT a bike looks like being to me a big consideration and >>TRIUMPH

I keep seeing comparisons with the Himalayan and not the Scram. Seems odd as both the Scram and this bike are scramblers; the Himalayan clearly is not.

I think it's just because I've spent so much time on the Himalayan I tend to overlook the Scram and I'd personally always go Himalayan over Scram. But you're right, it's the one you'd compare to the Triumph.

You will never get away from the fact that this is a subcontract build motorcycle and the Triumph PR machine will have to go into overdrive to try to convince you that it is a real Triumph ,as opposed to a Royal Enfield which is let me think oh that will be a real Royal Enfield built in house by Royal Enfield.

Very disappointing, really It's supposed to be a scrambler Wrong tyres, plastic bashplate, front fender to low Think once again we have an image bike Nice looks, but more money to be spent to get it where it is supposed to be Be interesting to see you really putting this bike through the lanes Lots of people have deposits on these bikes, and the real test will be how many are on ebay in a couple of months time Watching with interest Good luck
