Totally well explained! I experimented with distance to the ball on full shots, even driver and was amazed when I found THE groove. Driver, long ironds, fairway woods...I now take a few practice swings varying distance slighly, until I get that "groove" feeling. Dramatic improvements now.

Alex, really glad You came out with this. During My 70 odd years of teaching I have tried to have all My pupils play with hands more or less under their chins. Reason pupils have the ball further out is that it promotes a flatter swing which makes everyone feel they are hitting from the inside, which is correct. If My perception of the modern swing is correct the body plays a big part in producing power. The tour players drive with the right side which is almost impossible to do if standing too far away. The other reason is that most players fear the "over the top move" and they feel safer as ball position gets further out. My neighbor, the GREAT Moe Norman, had one problem. He couldn't keep up with the Tour players, off the tee. I always felt his straight arms address was in part, part of the problem. I stand to be corrected on that point of view. Of course He made up with his fantastic accuracy but never had any real success on the US Tour. I once watched Moe for two hours hitting iron shots. When He walked away there was not a single mark on the ground. He picked most iron shots off the ground without divots. As You know he was regarded as the best ball striker by the likes of Ben Hogan, Nick Faldo and Arnold Palmer plus many others. Jimmy Ballard hated "disconnection" You can't be TRULY connected standing too far from the ball. Any chance You could carry this philosophy in to all the other clubs. I would love to see one of Your videos depicting the content of todays video. Love Your stuff. Ray.

Excellent video Alex on how far to stand away from the golf ball on chipping and pitching. I have to admit, I am guilty of reaching out too far with my arms and this leads to disastrous shots. I'll definitely pay more attention on my set ups from now on. Well Done Alex!

I think what a lot of people fail to realize is golf is a sport, meaning ideally you're an athlete. Much like every other sport out there, there are fundamentals necessary but nobody is going to have everything be exactly the same every time. It's the split second compensations that come from tons of practice, everything isn't and shouldn't be cookie cutter. Some of the best coaching advice i received was practicing drills where you might be slightly out of position, and purposefully hitting bad shots so i knew what it felt like to not swing ideally. This sounds counterintuitive, but when a golfer normally swings badly they aren't paying attention to how things feel, they're just thinking about making contact. But when you drill yourself knowing an outcome is going to occur based on feelings you practiced, when things don't become completely ideal you can reorient yourself to where they are again. I'm not promoting that you practice hitting bad shots every day, but you definitely should know what they feel like and what the outcome will be if you don't correct. Just be an athlete.

I realized today I was too far from the ball causing lots of topping. I moved closer and had my irons more level with the ground which made a huge improvement. Saw this video pop up and I immediately felt better about my own swing correction. In your future videos, it would be nice if you said which club you were using so I have a gauge of what I should be aiming for as well.

Nice tips but one thing I have noticed is that many instructors fail to let you know what club they are hitting. Are you hitting a 60, 58, 56 degree wedge? I know it’s different for everyone but it would be nice if they tell you what club they are using.

at address, the closer I am to the ball and the steeper my swing becomes with the consenquence that I start to hit fat.The further away I am from the ball, my swing becomes shallower and I stop to hit fat.So for me it works only to be further away from the ball

I agree with this, but when I try to get properly close to the ball, I find myself shanking the ball, especially on pitch shots. Nothing is worse than sitting on the fairway 20 yards from the pin, and shanking a pitch into the weeds, which costs 2+ strokes in a heartbeat. Also, I got myself some impact stickers to put on my clubs, and tried them on the range yesterday. On my driver and my irons, I consistently hit the ball on the heel side (not one hit on the toe side), and I occasionally shank irons as well. The driver you can't shank, obviously, but you can hit it left off the heel, which I occasionally do. Interestingly, on my fairway woods I consistently hit the sweet spot. I absolutely need to solve this on pitches, irons, and my driver, if I am going to reduce my current 12 handicap.

Alex this is Ron from Indiana. Question so I might have discovered with the driver. So the hands are also a little forward of the head of the driver just like irons? I always thought the whole left arm was in a straight line with the club head. Is this why I slice so much? I've tried everything I was supposed to to draw the ball, this seems to be the only thing that works. Can't wait to hear from you and your answer. Thanks Alex!
