In retrospect, this choice shouldn't surprise me in the slightest--you have been gushing about it nonstop on the channel 😅. It's really a wonderful piece, I've tried it on several times in person and would've considered it if I didn't already have an SBGA413. Wear it in good health!

@@skellington2000 because full quartz is not as mechanically elegant as spring drive, and that's the big thing spring drive captures: accuracy of quartz, artistry of mechanical. And based on how resilient and persistent Seiko has been, I highly doubt Spring Drive will stop being hard to repair that soon in the future. Also, your logic isn't even fully sound because plenty of mechanical watches are even more hellish to service than spring drive.

I must admit, I have been lusting after the Omiwatari ever since I first saw it. It has been the first Grand Seiko that has had that effect on me. The lack of a power reserve on the dial is a sure fire winner and the fact that it is manually wound is truly romantic for a Watch nerd. I just wish that I could afford one. Congratulations on your new Watch Andrew 👏 A beautiful choice. Enjoy it and wear it in good health. ✊

I don't think Grand Seiko has ever officially said why they started putting the power reserve indicators on their spring drive movements, but if you look back at the developmental history of spring drive at GS, you'll see that the primary engineering challenge in developing the movement was in getting the power reserve to a usable length. The first prototype in 1983 would only run for 4 hours, and it took until 2004 for the movement to have a long enough power reserve to use automatic winding and enter series production. I think this is why they started putting the power reserve on the dial, to mark their engineering achievement with spring drive. Someone should ask the people at GS whether that's actually the case, by the way (hint, hint).

Have to admit over the past few weeks I have had Grand Seikos on my mind a lot. Even after looking at other high end brands I still desire a grand seiko. I have one AD in my city that sells Rolex, Omega, Patek, Tudor, IWC, and Grand Seiko. The problem is, I cannot stand the store manager and refuse to purchase anything from them. This forced me to look at alternatives such as Chrono 24 where I found Omicron Watches in Tokyo. All up, including shipping and taxes, I managed to save thousands of NZ dollars over purchasing from my local AD. I have the full 5-year warranty and it only took a few days to arrive (including Customs clearance). Omicron's customer service, communications, range, and prices were fantastic and I recommend them if you don't have a local supplier.

Excellent video! You bring up a solid, foundational point that often gets overlooked: personal connection and taste. There are pieces that sit high on paper. But, at the end of the day, if it doesn’t make you happy or smile or feel fuzzy, it isn’t the watch for you. You found one that does those things, and that should be celebrated. For me? I haven’t a clue. I always seek out the Omega/IWC/Tudor thing as “this seems right - a GADA piece.” And, then, I remember the Dornblüth. I melt. I remember a Habring and blush. I think about a vintage Longines and smile. Those might do it for me. And I don’t know why.

I felt the same way the day I bought my IWC Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Spitfire, IW387901. I always loved IWC since I was a teenager, loved that it was the first perfect looking watch to me in 20 years, that it was released in Goodwood, which is where I bought it, and that it has “747” in its serial number. I’m a pilot, I love Goodwood, I fly 747s and I always dreamt of flying a spitfire, which I aim to do this year. This watch is a symbol of so many dreams of mine coming true. Thanks for sharing your passions, Andrew. So happy that you started flying!

Grand seiko watches are simply brilliant. Some of the best finishing and dial designs out there. Some hate it but I think the spring drive is inspired. My favourite line are the evo 9s, especially the green birch and the new lake Suwa. If they made a bracelet as good quality as their watches, minds would be blown, money would be spent, lives would be graced with the magic of grand seiko

Well done sir, well deserved. I remember my first desired watch I had to have. Back in the late 70's I had gone thru Timex models as a teenager and ( red ) LED's until I discovered LCD Seiko. I just had to have it. Stainless steel case, bracelet and an LCD display. A months wages later it was mine. Bliss. Lost it travelling and have since bought it again. I now own a varied collection but always go back to wearing the old Seiko LCD with my old leather bomber jacket and trainers. The best days. I understand your feeling of 'I have it , I done it ! Welcome Andrew to the GS family. I also have a GS Snowflake spring drive, it has the reserve dial. Special occasion watch like Christmas and New Years with friends when you don't want to be 'that guy' showing off a Rolex or Patek Phillipe. It always starts a conversation. But like many watches, you want to preserve it's new looks. I wear it on special occasions only. It sits next to my Chopard Classic in the watch case.

The funny thing about the power reserve on this watch (I have its sister, the 009 Tsuki Tenshin) is that you might be inclined to think it makes sense to have it because these aren't automatic watches. But what you find out when owning one is that you cannot overwind these; when the watch is fully wound, the winding mechanism comes to a full stop. So basically, you don't need the power reserve to tell you when to stop winding; just wind it whenever you put it on until it can't be wound further and you're good. No PR indicator needed.

Great taste Andrew. My Grail watch is also the Credor Eichii II & many A Lange & Sohnes' 🤣. I have instead the Seiko SARX029 with a beautiful minimalistic Urushi dial. My favourite GS is also the Omiwatari and it's great on the wrist but expensive. My current go to watches for dress are Seiko SARX029 for its minimilistic philosophy which ties in with my love for minimalism and the watch I was aiming for, for nearly one year and recently purchased is the entry level luxury Longines Spirit Zulu Time GMT Blue GMT hand on black. I love its aviation & travel philosophy which ties in with my recreational travelling. Ciao

I LIKE modern GS watches, but I LOVE original ‘60-‘75 historical GS watches. FI the Kari-Zuri dial of my GS 6146-8030 is hard to match …. The fact that the parts of these watches were almost 100% handcrafted give me an incredible feeling of respect when I wear these items of my collection. After 60 years they are still highly acurate. Their Taro Tanaka style is so smart and wise ….

1st time I've seen a watch that I REALLY want is when I was 13, and I was wandering around in Montenapoleone st. here in Milan (which is the core of the fashion and luxury district in Milan, IT). I still remember it was an IWC Portuguese with white dial and blued hands... I thought it was a chrono, but back in 1987 there wasn't such thing, so probably a small second one :) Grate choice mate, really great choice. Maybe sell the quartz GS and try one something from another origin?

It’s excellent… Manual wound is very cool of course. The power reserve on the back keeps the dial “clean”. Not all Grand Seikos are spring drive: this one is! The dial is superb; I want to see it in evening light, or the multiple colour lights of a great night club. It probably is the best (prettiest) GS out there, unless … the same model comes in white birch. No date, means no stress in keeping it right in Februarys or Aprils …

Going for a Tudor Black Bay 58 myself. I have my eye on that watch for a couple of years now. Getting one as a present to myself for Christmas.

Congratulations, it's a beuty. Those macro shots of the brand gently resting on the textured dial with the light seeping through in between are gorgeous.

Hello Andrew. I do belive you got your grail watch. Me, being a mechanic on city buses, cars, tractors and boats and snowmobiles among other things you might think It to be a G-Shock Mudman to take a beating.. I already have a beater. My grail watch is the humble Patek Philippe Calatrava 5119G-001 Timeless beauty in my world.

Just so you know Andrew, even the doctor sitting next to me watching this wondered how a British school boy becomes interested in a Holden Special Vehicle.... HSV in Australian slang is a brute force mountain crushing V8 that runs on beer and dreams! We now realise you were actually referring to the thing you get from the Bathurst 1000 afterparty!

I am really hoping to be able to save for a GS Mt. Iwate. I was born 65 years ago in Morioka, Iwate Ken and as I get older, although I do not live in Japan, I feel that connection to my birthplace is important, even if its only wearing a watch that emulates Iwate san.

Haha nice, my first "retail Rolex price" watch was the Slga011 as my highschool graduation present. Wear it every day, only a few scratches in over a years time, took it to Italy, accuracy is a damn 1-2 seconds every 6-12 months!!! Top 5 best white dials I've seen in my life over any price range.

I've had a similar experience to yours but with an Oris Divers 65 bronze bezel. I honestly believe it's the most elegant and beautiful dive watch on the market at any price point and I need to get one!

I am envious:) Just got the SBGW231. Next is this, the SBGY007. It requires real saving. Then the SGLH005. This requires even more saving. That will complete the GS trifecta: manual, spring drive, and hi-beat 80h reserve auto. They each have unique dial that are GS hallmarks, and to throw in a GS 44 case to boot. As much as they are, they added up to less than a sport car depreciate per year, at least that's how I am selling it to the wife.

I had one of these on wrist the other week. It's lovely! I'm still too smitten with the snowflake though which I also had a look at. I just love it. I will own one one day... The Eichi II is also my all time favourite watch!

My "One Watch" is the Omega Speedmaster Blue Side of The Moon with the Aventurine dial, it is like $13k but of all the watches I have ever seen, it is MINE! I live 15 minutes away from NASA, and I have seen over 300 launches from my front yard, I have had bonfires on the beach, watching a SpaceX Falcon 9 screaming into the starry night and the Aventurine Dial and its starry night color are Perfect, plus the moonphase is Gold, and it is a version of the definitive MOON WATCH, its PERFECT.

Congrats. Not my thing - not because I don’t love the style, I very much do, they just to me evoke a feeling of being clinical and I can’t get passionate about that. But I can understand totally why others do.
