This is such a wise decision. Those fellowships have such a prestige factor that it’s hard to imagine turning one down, but they don’t last forever. Better to build on your dream now and let the PhD happen on its own time.

Congratulations! It is so important to have things outside of your PhD and to know it isn't what your entire life has to be. I didn't work outside of my PhD. Many of my appointments required that I didn't work additional jobs. However, I was in a lab that didn't do exactly what I was interested in doing but my coadvisors encouraged to pave my own way. During the pandemic, I had to throw out my whole dissertation and make connections to develop new projects. I graduated last month! Its really empowering to know that I had the perseverance to make it through. I see you are doing the same in your own way! Fantastic job Kaelyn!

Congratulations on being awarded the fellowship and then making the funding decision that is right for you. You will do great things with the opportunities. I’m curious about whether your decision to self fund your dissertation eliminates the award of the fellowship status, or just the stipend? Meaning will you still have the affiliation with Cambridge and be considered a fellow, or no? I’m thrilled for you either way and interested in learning more about the new job.

I’ve been watching your videos since before i got into my PhD program. I’m now in the summer before my third year and trying to make some hard decisions about if this program is right for me and transferring and how i imagine my life and how i can best serve a dream life for me. This video is so encouraging, even as I’m in a very different decision situation, as it reminds me that in many ways, while we are working at crossroads, making hard decisions, we are dropping seeds that very well may blossom into the dreamiest freakin flower. I feel like that’s cheesy. But i want to say thank you for sharing the intimate details of the crossroads on your journey with us (a task which i can’t imagine is easy). It’s so encouraging knowing that out of the scary choices may emerge the loveliest end result. Such huge congratulations on achieving your dream! & thank you for helping me as i navigate all mine ❤

Such an amazing opportunity, Kaelyn! Congrats! I am so so happy for you and I have no doubt in my mind that you will do such a wonderful and fulfilling job there at The Productivity Lab. I wanted to say that I completely understand where you're coming from and I am going the same thing myself. I'm about to finish my MA thesis. I quit my job (as an artist with an active online shop) in 208, to focus on my Master Degree and looking back, I think it wasn't the right move for me. I'm the kind of person who needs to do different things each day and to stay creative. This is why I am planning to get back creating content for my memory keeping community and create new products and re-open my shop by the end of this year, with starting my PhD in the fall and having a full-time homelife with small children. I understood that the only way it can work is if I do it all, like I've done my entire life. Up until 2018, I combined them all and that has worked perfectly for me, so I am looking forward to go back to the system that has proven itself for many many different reasons. I think you will be just fine. I just KNOW you will succeed in your new path. You can have it all. I believe in you :)

Congratulations!! I think there tends to be a lot of judgement against self funding a PhD, but in some cases it’s just what makes sense. I’m self funding as well, partly because I’m in such a niche area that no one cares about or would have funded, but also partly because I was working a professional job before the PhD and going down to 60% position in that still gives me significantly more money than a UK PhD stipend would be. I’m doing my PhD part time, and sure it does take longer, but I’m having the best time and have really been able to set my own pace and prevent burnout. I hope it works out as well for you as it has for me!

I think you could have easily worked AND done your fellowship, loads of people do it in the UK, and so long as you do the fellowship work they don't really check on what else you're doing.
