Күн бұрын

The tragic and untimely death of One Direction singer Liam Payne was a terrible shock to music fans throughout the world. The exact circumstances for his fall from a third-floor balcony at the CasaSur hotel in Buenos Aires are currently unknown, but stories about Payne’s mental health before his death tell a tale of heartbreak and suffering. Should the blame lie with talent shows, the parents, or the entire entertainment industry?
To answer these questions, Piers Morgan hosts comedian and America’s Got Talent judge Howie Mandel, singer Katie Waissel, who appeared on X Factor alongside One Direction, comedian James Barr and Uncensored contributor Esther Krakue. As mainstays in the entertainment industry themselves, they all have a lot to say.
00:42 Introduction
02:45 Howie Mandel on Liam Payne’s death and the duty of care
06:40 Katie Waissel on mental health in show business
08:00 James Barr jumps in “we are all responsible”
11:10 “Liam talked publicly about his mental health and his drug addiction years ago”
12:59 “During our time on the show, there was no duty of care upheld”
14:40 “What did you expect by going on these shows?
22:15 “I’m someone who went through the wrongs of things”
24:16 Esther Krakue on the public attitude to Liam Payne’s death
25:28 What does duty of care look like 14 years down the line?
28:17 Esther asks “where are the parents?”
31:22 What is the link between X Factor in 2010 and Liam Payne dying at age 31 in a hotel room?

What's funny about your comment is....Esther is just being NORMAL. But surrounded by insane people, she seems brilliant. Nothing she's saying is really that smart, it's just all common sense. Something so many don't have these days. Now having said that, I do like to listen to anyone who speak the truth in a dignified way and Esther certainly represents that.

As a mother of six adult children, i have one adult child who struggles with what is traditionally known as addiction... how much responsibility do we place on the people in his orbit or him? He is my child, i take responsibility for where he's at today, but i also recognise the choices he has made, and still makes. Im not going to waste his life blaming others. I'd rather spend my energy helping him find peace with the man he is!

I don't think she's saying that but that had a structured support program been in place at the time things may have been different. Effects are accumulative. Young developing nervous systems need to be given the resources to cope with the nervous system dysregulation that comes with instant fame, fans, media attention...etc They make enough money off these programs and subsequent sales so they are responsible for a sensible program of care for a period of time. If that was provided disaster may be averted and people may not reach for substances.

As Liam mentioned in his podcast, during xfactor, he was left, as a child , in a hotel room, told not to leave, WITH a fully stocked mini bar. This is what started his issue with alcohol (party for one, he called it!) and ultimately what then contributed to him losing his life. Had there been sufficient safeguarding from Syco, then this would never have happened in the first place. I know there are many contributing factors here, but maybe had he not been put in this situation, at such a young and impressionable age, things might have ended differently. More control measures need to be put in place for the underage contestants, as they need it most.

Piers is fortunate that these two young people were unable to clearly communicate. This video has nagged at me. Simon Cowell, his employees and shows treat children as a commodity. The more I think about this in the context of the music industry and Hollyweird the more I think there's a lesson to be learned for parents and a possible civil suit towards those involved in some cases. Howie's defensive and shaking and Piers is defensive constantly interrupting. This video is proof that instead of caring these two men are on the defensive.

Indeed. Furthermore, who on earth would want the talent show execs to provide that care? I sure the heck wouldn't. This care is supposed to come from your own care system, your beliefs, worldviews, people you confide in and open up to (professional or other) etc.... I've struggled with things under different employers, but I went to my wife and friends to talk things through. I wouldn't want the company I work for to provide some weird type of counselling for me. That would almost seem invasive.

It makes NO SENSE at all. And look at her whilst Esther is speaking…..she is NOT listening, she is waiting to respond…….Esther sat patiently for like 10 mins and listened politely, whilst everyone else spoke, and as soon as she started speaking Katie sits there rolling her eyes and making faces…..she is so rude & clearly an attention seeker, who hasn’t gotten being rejected 14 years ago and projecting HER OWN struggles to this conversation. I’m convinced Liam Payne had a huge amount of internal trauma which often leads to addiction & drug use. He got torn to shreds daily on social media & how anyone can deal with that for a prolonged period must be unbearable. It’s a miracle this doesn’t happen to more young stars

True. But its a great life skill to keep things real, and its priceless to also have at least one friend who tells it to you straight. He was struggling with his lack of solo success, compared to the others, yet telling everyone he's sold the most singles! He's claiming he's the one the group was built around, and the leader of the band. Pure fantasy, and delusional, someone should have stepped in right there and reality checked him. Venomous social media can be avoided or managed by his team to a degree, you take the rough with the smooth. He was craving his fans adoration, that was missing through the music, so he unwisely turned to social media for connection to his fans. Watch Justin Hawkins video on him. Its funny, harsh, but frightening how he actually had Liam totally sussed out.

I'm perplexed as to why Katie cant see how ridiculous it is to suggest that an entertainment company has a legal duty of care 14 years after they left the show. Sure, they were kids then, but now they're all grown and have to take responsibility for their choices. If you want to be famous, you should know what you're signing up for.
3 ай бұрын
They don't have a legal duty, but they started this ball rolling. That show eats people alive and anyone with half a brain could clearly see, when he auditioned, Liam was different than the others. He was a lot more vulnerable. Many people have sacrificed their careers and walked away from those shows, in particular, Simon Cowell, because of what they...and he...do to you. Because of how bad they are.

@user above - What do you want them to do? Do you want them to pay for counselling for every person that was ever on the show?
@Meme_Mori

I would argue that making the decision to go on the show in the first place is what gets the ball rolling. And yes, all reality / talent shows chew people up and spit them out. That's the nature of the beast and the risk you take when you sign a contract to be on a show like that. Liams parents would have signed that contract for him. I understand that emotions may be running high at the moment given the unfortunate events that occurred, but Katies argument is still ridiculous.

Where are the families in all of this? The true duty of care should come from the family first and foremost. Liam Payne attempted X Factor twice. The thirst was real and he made it. Most bands have a 5 year life span. Everyone in the industry knows that.

I dont particularly care for the Talent shows and I never saw much of Howie Mandel's comedy act, but I am a big fan of him because he is always so introspective. He has dealt with mental health issues his whole life and he isnt afraid to talk about them in an attempt to destigmatize the topic. Hes a very smart man and he seems to more importantly be a very GOOD man and I am a fan of him because of that. Very glad to hear his voice on this very tragic topic

Liam had been diagnosed with ADHD in 2023. ADHD has a higher rate of addiction to self medicate, ADHD with Substance Use is a higher rate of suicide.

How can someone be diagnosed in 2023 AFTER taking drugs for years? Surely drug taking causes all the symptoms of ADHD? If ADHD was the reason he started taking drugs then anyone with an ADHD diagnosis should be banned from taking part in these shows. But that would be discrimination.
