I've Lost the Touch - Zone Focusing with Voigtländer 40mm f/2

I dont do hip shooting to be sneaky. I do it because I’m 191 cm tall and don’t want the perspective of a top down view and flatting the image. In general I think the perspective of aiming around upper body levels creates a more dynamic and interesting view of a subject. Lifting a persons head above the horizon line. It’s a bonus that people might not understand I’m actually taking a photo. 😉

I agree! I also do it these days with the flip out screen, but for me specifically, there was definitely a time when I did it to be sneaky because I was very shy! I totally agree that a chest-level perspective is great. A friend of mine once put it nicely: "shoot from the heart." :)

Kudos for the candor and technique challenges. Too many YT hosts underplay challenges and limitations of a given method. Zone focus was my go-to method for old film cams - when there wasn’t time to check split screen focus. Would you improve focus hits for moving subjects by using zone focus combined w/high speed continuous shutter - noted that 1/500 sec for your images? For reflection shots using this method, is the zone distance to reflection or to reflective surface? Thumbnail color coordination - blue shirt and text - nice. Not many channels have “devout viewers”😊. Cheers!

Yeah, funny thing, we shot a new video yesterday with the Yashica Electro 35 and I was zone focusing most of the time, but it was a bright sunny day and I was on f/8 - f/16 the whole time, so it was easy... but I haven't see the photos yet so I could be wrong haha. It's true that I could do a burst of 20 shots per second on the moving subjects and one of them would be in focus probably... but that's no fun, haha! For reflections I focus on the subjects usually. Thanks! Yeah, it would be cool if they made AF lenses too, but I think at this point the brand is associated with retro style MF lenses. :)

To me hip shooting is not about being sneaky but not disturbing the scene. Especially when I’m using a z8 which is a large camera

I agree. That is a reason to do it also. I like the best of both worlds with a flip out screen. I can hold the camera low and be unobtrusive but still get to see my framing and focus properly. :)

Great video. Why those photos from z9 looks so noisy just around 5000 ISO ? It feels like the noise level is quite high for a full frame flagship camera.

Most high res cameras tend to exhibit noise at moderately high ISO especially when the area is poorly lit. My Sony A1 does this too but it cleans up nicely in Lightroom or DXO PureRAW.

There is little light in the scene and I'm on a high shutter speed. ISO is not a simple thing where you get the same amount of noise at the same ISO at all times. It has to do with the signal to noise ration of the scene. Less light = more noise. Maybe I'll make a video about this some day.

Yeah, it's not too fast. The camera can do 20 per second and then I end up with an insane amount of images (basically a video lol). 4 per second is enough for me and I rarely hold it down, opting to press for each shot.

On a full frame with a 40mm at f/2.0 focused on 4 meters your dof range is 3.5m to 4.65m. Seems you don’t really understand zone focus. That f/2.0 aperture kills the dof. Set it to f/8 to get some useful range. Hyperfocal distance is 6.89m.

It's easy to get focus. When your whole subject (from head to feet) is displayed in VF, shoot. And for 40mm, it's 4meters. For mid portrait 2.5m, etc..

You have to balance what you want from your photo, if you want your focus to be on subjects several meters away with a deeper dof bringing more foreground and background into focus then you do that, but he specifically described why he likes 4m
