I've Made Some INK! The Wet Pen's In-House Ink to Support the Channel

Rather than set up Patreon, I've decided that I'd create my own inks to support this channel. I've been developing these ink formulas for about a year and a half, and I'm making the ink myself in small batches. I'm starting with these three: a blue (of course) and a couple of unusual, shading inks.
I've put a lot of work into these inks, and I'm happy with them, but remember that these inks are intended mostly as a way to support the site, so don't judge them too harshly.
These inks are available for order on my website, which I hope works as intended.

*** SHIPPING DELAY *** Hello Everyone, First of all, thank you for supporting my channel by ordering these inks! I was a bit overwhelmed by the positive response, and I appreciate it very much. As I was bottling Deception Pass and Elliott Bay over the weekend, I discovered a potential problem with the 2 inks. I understand the root of the problem and how to fix it, and I’m in the process of mixing up and testing a new batch of each. Needless to say, this has put me a little behind schedule when it comes to shipping the orders that contain these inks. Assuming that all goes well with the new formulation, the inks should ship out on Monday. I’m very sorry for the delay, but I want to make sure that I’m not sending out a bad ink. Those of you who only ordered Rainier Blue may have already received your orders, or they'll be there soon! As someone who makes the vast majority of my income from Patreon, I completely respect the desire to not use it. Partitioning content is a pain in the ass and can be very unsatisfying as a creator who naturally wants to share all the things you make widely. You also have to maintain a delicate balance of walled content and public content... too much walled content, people forget you exist, too much public content, there's no strong incentive to subscribe. I think "tip jar" style Patreons are a good compromise for casual creators, but they're usually not enough to pay rent off of. Also delighted that you're releasing inks with shading properties! Those are my favorite! And you're local to me too. Excited to see how they look in person.

I consider your videos the best made fountain pen hobby content on YT. I just love the high quality production, attention to detail, pacing and unique content! Of course I ordered all three inks. I think it is a brilliant way to support a creator. Much more thought out than a Patreon. Especially since I consider your inks true to the channel‘s quality aspiration. As a fellow Pacific Northwester, I too always appreciate the beauty of our environment and think these two ink colors really represent the beautiful green and blue tones of the area. Wow, I feel like this was inevitable...You making inks. Elliot Bay and Deception P is my fave, but I have to say I'm really impressed with the packaging, perfect labels! In high school I was studying book design and binding that included graphics and packaging as well, and was always amazed by my teacher's professional foil stamped boxes and labels for luxury bottles of hungarian spirits. Reading through the comments, so glad that ppl are ordering these! My way of supporting is watching your ink swatching playlists for the hundredth time, for now. :)

I think that's the sort of thing that I'd definitely do if I were going to be starting a real ink business. As it is, since this is basically a brief fund-raising campaign, I'm keeping costs down by only worrying about one type of bottle and packaging. Maybe in the future, though!

These inks are just stunning! I used to live in Seattle (now a few hours out) and I love your videos with their high quality production, footage of the region, and close-ups on swatched inks - so I had to get a few! I have a blue-green chromashader in Wearingeul Robinson Crusoe already but that ink is tropical in comparison (and we all know nobody can have too much blue). And really I'm just so starry-eved for the packaging, and that footage of the colorshifts! The detail put into everything is so impressive. You mostly have to do it near slack tide. Basically drift in the current under the south end of the bridges and drift back after the tide changes.

Very nice colors, especially the effects once dried. A great balance between comfortable for everyday use yet with a touch of originality. I'm away from the country for a while, an effective cure against indulging in even more ink bottles! I think quite a few thought about DIY ink, but the main obstacle would be supplies (I'm guessing, feel free to share your experience). You need things like biocide and dyes, and the minimum order would be way more than you can use by yourself for personal use.

Yes, that's exactly the type of thing that I ran into when I started out. Most of the places that sell raw dyes (without additives for dying cloth) sell it in massive quantities... 50 pound drums and that sort of thing... so it took me a while to find a supplier who would sell by the pound (even that is expensive and more than I'll ever use). The dye company that I'm working with sends me free samples of dye that are in the 10-20g size range (enough to make a few liters of ink), so I can experiment with lots of colors. Luckily, here in Washington there's a company that sells biocides for the lotion/cosmetics industry that are skin-safe and they sold me some in a reasonable quantity as well... it took me nearly a year to find them and figure out something that would work well in ink... the original samples of Deception Pass grew mold after a just a few weeks (though Rainier Blue would probably last a year without any biocide for some reason... I add it anyway).

Received my inks last week safe and sound (all the way to the Atlantic Northeast, haha) and swatched them and they’re even more beautiful in person! The color-morphing characteristics are fascinating. Deception Pass was amazing to watch as it went from blue to a sage-like green on my paper. The red sheen on Rainier Blue is a knockout as well. I showed my father (who is a chemical engineer by education), and he too was fascinated by the behavior of the inks. Happy to support your channel and congrats on your success! I thought that color change with the Deception Pass was pretty cool, too :-) I just got an order this morning with new dyes for the next ink formulas, although I have several more on order, too. I received my ink bottles a few days ago. All I can say is that all three of them are quickly becoming some of my favorites. I love the fact that they are not overly saturated, and the colors are wonderful on all of the papers that I use (TR, Iroful, Rhodia, even Exacompta). But what I love about them is that are pleasantly wet inks - not overly so - but just perfect. I loaded them first into fairly wet pens and the performed beautifully. I then put all three inks into different pens that were slightly dry writing pens. Again, they were perfect. In fact, I have a Lamy Studio with a gold nib that has never performed very well . . . until I put Ranier Blue in it. It is like they were made to be together. Thank you, Matthew. I will be ordered each of the three colors again.

Matthew, you're amazing! I'm of the mind that Rainier Blue looks gorgeous, but I already have soooo many medium vibrant blues, and I really don't need another one. On the other hand, I do have a dear friend that loves Pilot Iroshizuku Kon Peki almost as much as I do, and this might be a great gift for him. We'll see... I know that Elliott Bay and Deception Pass will soon be in my collection, though, so it's an order for either two or all three for me today! Thank you for this great way to support your channel!

Yes, I was originally ONLY going to make Rainier Blue, since it's the easiest, most reliable formula to get right, but it's a common enough color that I thought I'd better do something more interesting, too :-) Hope you enjoy the inks!

These are typical dye-based inks: no real water resistance to speak of, unfortunately. Water resistant inks will be another step along the learning path for me, but I'm not there yet.

i am an ink maker from bangladesh i made handmade inks and sell them at cheaper prices . but people of my country specially the sellers threat me and forced me to stop . ink making was my hobby i sell them to get the money and make new ink it got destroyed .

Hi Matthew! Found your channel last year because my friend was going on a trip to Japan and was going on an ink adventure. And I told her about your Japanese series on exclusive inks and she came back with just that. Now in 2025 I will be going for the pen show but I want to incorporate what you did and visited shops in different areas. Now I need to tell her about your inks…she loves blues! And well my pen club friends have me trying out blues too! So I will place an order next month when she returns from her trip. I’m not one to usually comment on videos, but I felt compelled to express my gratitude for the production of your videos and the new fountain pen inks. The Patreon aspect is particularly especial and carful considering how it takes into account regions around the world where the dollar has a higher value. For instance, here, the dollar is worth five times more, making a TWSBI Eco or a Lamy Safari represent half a month’s worth of work. I wish you success in this new venture. I thoroughly enjoy the videos and the colors of the inks are simply incredible.

As a newer subscriber, this is wonderful. I'm not a big Blue Ink fan, but these are very nice and vibrant, at least on my screen, with my brightness, compared to the other color swatch videos I've seen here. I'm pleased at how these inks performed on the plain lined paper, feathering is a constant struggle and most of my everyday writing is on this kind of paper. You've captured something with these inks that is really pleasing to me, how they lay out on paper. You've put a ton of thought into these inks, their colors and naming. Deception Pass is especially pleasing to me. Congratulations on the launch of three beautiful inks!
