May well be that the output is 8 ohms. Modern stereos are 4 ohms. Our old tube tele many many years ago had 16ohm speakers and I remember that trying to speak over it was difficult, whereas the modern 4ohm speakers you can easily speak/have a conversation with someone, Or if you're listening to it and someone talks, it over powers the speakers, if you know what I mean.

I started repairing radios and televisions while living in Gibraltar back in the late 60s and these featured valves. I had access to a valve tester, which was great fun. Nowadays, I don't get to work on valve equipment, which is ashame. So watching you working on these valve radios brings back good memories.

Wow, you're a better man than me for attempting to power that radio up with all those blown caps. Looked like every paper cap in the thing was pulled inside out. Looks like it's all there, though, so I'm sure that after you've given it your magic touch it'll look and work like new again. Also, you mentioned you have a mask that shields you from alcohol fumes. I've been looking for something like that ever since I cleaned a computer keyboard at JFK Airport with 99% IPA for a customer and left the place higher than the airplanes circling overhead. That was 40 years ago. Been leery of the stuff ever since.

This radio comes from an era of Grundig where they had already undertaken quite a bit of cost cutting in their manufacturing process compared with earlier years. The glass dials were now replaced with plexiglass ones. The once heavy painted chassis was replaced with a much flimsier nickel plated one with plating that corroded away rather quickly. The switch assembly was cheapened with more plastic parts And pot metal rot on parts like flywheels and clutches began showing up. I'm just completing a restoration of a model 3035 from around 1957. Basically the same circuit except for the eye tube. But there's no comparison in the build quality. The 3035 is built like a tank. By the mid 60's the quality dropped even further, exemplified by the absolute piece of junk that was the model 4070.

Manuel, great to see you with a tube radio again! I'm sure you plan on aligning this later on. I'd love to see you do the alignment with a simple basic signal generator and a VTVM, the kind of tools a hobbyist may have. Not sure of your other followers but that would be a help to me. Just a thought. Thanks for considering it.

Hi Manuel. That is a great little radio and you have got off to a very promising start. I may be wrong (and I probably am), but I seem to remember that low down behind the unusual FM scale there is another Dial lamp for lighting the bottom part of the scale. Also it seems a little strange that one tube was covered in white power, and the one next to it was nice and clear. Again great stuff as usual, and looking forward to seeing the next episode. Cheers Chris.

It may just be that the output tube gets so much hotter that it "bakes" the dirt into more like an ash. I've seen the same on many radios I've restored.

I actually regretted cleaning the white powder off with my bare fingers, because it could be anything. Anyway, I’m feeling fine, so it wasn’t anything too dangerous 😊 There is in fact a scale for FM that I didn’t see at first.

I am curious as to whether this model has the pot metal clutch, and if it is still intact or broken, and how you will fix it if it is. I have a Majestic that is very similar, it had a broken clutch, I had set it aside for awhile due to that and a few other issues. It looks like this model doesn't offer the electrostatic tweeters.
