Nice video as always. Have a closer look at the schematic. Around the mains and audio output transformers, they not only indicate the wire gauge and number of turns of the various winding sections, they also give you the resistance in ohms. That is a great help in checking if the transformer is OK and, if not, which part of the winding is either broken or fried.

A great review of the restoration process that I used to restore my Blaupunkt Florenz. Can’t wait to see how you restore the cabinet finish. I used Restor-A-Finish but I’m sure there is a better method.

Great video!! I never tire of a schematics walk-through and I really like your approach. There is always something new to learn and there were two or three things that caught my attention on this one that I know will be of use. The Sultan's are really nice radios. I have a 21100 (1961/62), which has an amazingly good sound for the size (and the case is immaculate so no need to do a Tipton on it! 🤣). I am very much looking forward to seeing how this one progresses!!!

Great video as per usual. You're so right about David Tipton's skill for woodwork and transformer windings. Also, i see there is a EM87 tube. They are rare to find. However, a Chinese 6E2 is an exact tube and they are not so expensive and redily available.

Have the same one but it has no PCB. And all the IFTS had silver mica disease. Its is working now after SMD cure and recap. Did put 4 silicon diodes and 56ohm resistor + bypass caps. 33:41 so nice that they provide number of turns, wire gage and resistance on transformer.

Great Idea outlining some of the work that often doesn't make it to the final video. I will assume you are on a Mac, on WIndows PCs there is a 'print to PDF' print option, you can simply print the locked PDF to a new, unlocked, PDF. I liked your option also 👍 The Loewe radio I have just rewound the transformer for also had the wire gauge and turns numbers on the sleeve and in the schematic. A completely different mindset back then. Thanks for the shout out, you do alright on the cabinets too Manuel 👍😀

I have tried the “print to” option here and it doesn’t unlock it with my MAC. I really like the detail that was provided back then. More helpful, and less afraid of copycats. I like doing the shoutouts as I see this as a community, and really believe that “the more the merrier” 😊 also, I find it amusing that some personal messages I get seem to believe that you and I are bitter rivals 😊 I always respond that I’d never get into an open rivalry with an Aussie as you guys have huge knives, while we can only fight back with bottles of Madeira wine 😊you would ultimately win the fight, but we’d be really merry as we faced our doom 🥴

That's prescient as my next valve radio is a Blaupunkt Riviera H2154. Yours is about 10 years later though so not too many carry overs but it's interesting that they were still persisting with the separate mains transformer module at a time when cost cutting was needed in the face of those newfangled thingummyjigs called transistors. For the record I started my electronics journey at about the time your Sultan was made, swapping my subscription from the Eagle comic to Radio Constructor magazine. A bad move financially as those old comics are much more collectable now. 😂

Now that you have a 3D printer you could make some covers for the open pots 🙂 Hhhhmmm if you don't have a variac you could feed a low frequency tone in to the transformer too ? Have to try that. Have to take a wire of the cap of course.

You can do that, but the source of the signal must be able to drive the transformer as a load. Sometimes a simple signal generator simply doesn’t have the ability to do that. The best alternative is to ilude a simple small AC transformer with 6 or 12V, which are easy to find in a junk box.

@@electronicsoldandnewI found a small audio oscillator like a XR2206 going through a little TDA7231A amp that will put out 1-2 watts. Run the lot off a 12V. Also good for speakers and audio transformers. Take the low level high Z XR output and used for feeding into amplifiers too. Not one of the Kits - a few problems with their dersign. I just used the datasheet. I frequently use mine with just batteries. Curtsy of PCBWay of course, a shared project 🙂 Could be a useful additional to your under shelf collection of gadgets and gizmos.

The finish used on the later models is not lacquer. It's a tinted (dark walnut) two part polyester resin. The color always came from tinting the top coats, whether the top coat was nitrocellulose lacquer or the later two part polyester resin top coat. The actual veneer was never stained, as doing so causes the veneer to lose definition.

I think the Sultan refers to the full "form factor" cabinet like the one you have and the Stockholm to the lower profile - speaker on the side of the dial glass models. On a side note , lazy suzan is nice for the initial presentation and a good look at the finished radio but all the wiggling and jiggling in between is kind of annoying. There i said it. 🤪

The ECL 86 has become a lot more scarce, and as a result, a lot more expensive. US prices from the main suppliers are now close to $60, and supplies are low. Really a shame, because that tube is considerably more problematic than the EL84, EABC80 combination it replaces. I know of no technical advantage, so I assume they did this for cost savings by reducing the tube count. And then, of course, there's the use of those flimsy, easily damaged, phenolic circuit boards. Ugh.
