Milford Track is a magical walk, but you have to book in advance for the huts, or be lucky to score a cancellation, plus have all the right gear. It's a bit late for Poppy, but in case anyone else was wondering, visitors to New Zealand that possess a full and valid driver's licence/permit from another country can legally drive on that licence for 12 months each time they enter NZ (and yes, you can pop over to another country for a day to renew that 12 months). The only caveat is that if the licence is not in English, you must obtain and carry a translation from an approved translator.
