Lazy Dog Farm

Күн бұрын

We recently took a trip to Thibodaux, Louisiana to visit CajunB and see his immaculate fig orchard. We'll take you along for the ride and show you some of the wonderful varieties he has growing on his homestead.
We'll also take a look at his backyard garden and discuss some of his favorite varieties to grow near the coast in southern Louisiana.

Wonderful video, thank you. I had the opportunity to live and work in Cajun country some 35 years ago and found the locals to be very hardworking and generous folk. There's really nowhere in the country like that area. You could do worse than to model your fig aspirations on Brian's knowledge and experience. I'll be taking a very hard look at that Biltmore tomato. How are the many and various fig cultivars crossed and created?
@LazyDogFarm
@LazyDogFarm 2 жыл бұрын
Good question on how they're created. I'm not 100% sure, but it's probably a very delicate process considering the fig itself is an inverted flower.

I traveled for work and rented all the time, usually from Hertz. If they were running short of passenger cars and they had them, they'd offer Mustang or Camaro convertibles for the same price. To be honest, a little impractical if you had much luggage or work supplies and noisey being a soft top. After a few times (I did like the Camaro better) I swore never again. Give me the minivan! Nice to see a different view of the LDF channel.

Field peas and snaps and a little okra together is my favorite! And man those loaded fig trees are awesome! My uncle makes a little muscadine and scuppernong wine for the holidays. But I don't know what type fig trees he has but he has two big trees that are loaded every year. He made some fig brandy last year. It taste so good till you don't think much about it but 5-6ounces... If you are sitting down don't get up. If you are already up you might need to sit down! I have a hard time falling asleep half the time but a thimble full of that brandy and in five minutes you are sawing logs!

Man, deer got into my garden this year and have just devastated it! They ate my corn, beans,peppers, strawberries, cabbage, okra, Brussels, broccoli! I could have BAWLED! We live in MI and have lots of deer around but they’ve never jumped our garden fence before. I put some Bonide Repels All Deterrent around the perimeter tonight in hopes it keeps them out, as well as motion lights and whirly-gigs. If anyone has any other suggestions I am open! In past years we have planted our property with clover and wildflowers and that’s the only difference this year, we didn’t get around to re-seeding the clover.
@markware4933
@markware4933 2 жыл бұрын
Kandice, like many on this forum, you suffer heartbreaking damage from deer. Apart from the commercial deterrents, you can DIY your own spray from One Million Scoville hot sauce from Amazon, mixed 1/4 cup per gallon plus a tsp. dishwashing soap and sprayed on the garden perimeter. There are also motion detectors that can activate a tripod sprinkler. Old timers used to swear by hanging pieces of Irish Spring soap about 10' apart around the garden perimeter. Best of luck.

I had a fig tree in my back yard which was very productive but all of a sudden it was overcome by a disease I think, something white was all over the branches and it eventually died. I hope to get more fig trees to try at it again and hope for the best for I do miss homemade fig preserves.

I wonder if it was just rust? Although rust doesn't normally kill a tree. It just makes it lose leaves but they grow back the next year.

Awesome video! Does he sell any cuttings? Would love to gift my father in law with a couple new varieties.

He does sell some cuttings in the fall on figbid.com. We'll also have trees on our site next spring.

Amazing Fig orchard! I had no idea we could grow bananas in Louisiana. I’d love to know the variety. I’ve grown banana as an ornamental.

Man I’d be in heaven down there with all them figs!! As I was watching I had the wife grab so fig bars, we love fig jam, bars etc!! Hope my tree produces them and they ripen this year, last year frost got to them but it was the first year transplant. I think on that big fig that’s fell over I’d cut the the majority of the tree on the ground and that one branch sticking almost straight up I’d stake you and let it grow my new main trunk. I was going to attempt to grow some sugar cane this year but didn’t so hope to grow a little next year, those pamelos was big!! I have a few citrus trees and a banana but unfortunately the people who sold me the banana didn’t know it was not a editable variety so got to get some others. Blue ice cream is one I want really bad, that stuff up here is exotic to us!! One day I’m going to have a conservatory so I can grow year round and citrus fruits etc. Looks like a good time and something for you to look forward to at your place!!
