FCC had a policy for years where everyone was expected to ride as individuals (i.e., without team tactics) and just ride hard. It used to be one of the messages you'd get from the commissaires before every race. My guess is that's primarily why Harry got in a stink.
@CLBJJ
@CLBJJ Жыл бұрын
I know this might be considered laughable in the context of this video but FCC is also one of the clubs in Melbourne with the strictest culture of safe racing. There are rarely more than 1-2 incidents every year or two because the races are that well run and marshalled.

I like this policy. When a single team turns up - with strong riders, typically - and rides as a team with no other team in the race, it ruins the race, or at best makes it shitty.

Teams in club races are terrible. They ruin the race, piss people off even if they don't express it (physically or otherwise), and generally lend a negative atmosphere to the whole thing. Saying "why don't you organise some mates" or "just organise the bunch" is... naive at best. It's obviously effective. Not only are the team mates typically the top of the grade in terms of power, but they often know how to race as a team, as is evidenced here. Constantly blocking / disrupting the chasing group is especially effective - and aggravating. One rider may have expressed his displeasure here, but IME there were more that felt the same way but don't say anything.

Though it isn't really a fair comparison - for everyone watching and thinking "there is no need for throwing elbows at a club race, A grade or not" there should also be the tought that "there is no need for systematic, strategic, negative riding to disrupt the chase group". It is just community sport, the money on the line if your teammate up the road wins is barely a few beers at the pub - and at the end of the day it's cruel to wind blokes up when they're just trying to get their $20 worth on a weekend.

had a similar issue last year - a guy we would LAP would try to jump back in the lead group (a lot - but not always). finally at the end of the year i said something and he FLIPPED. he had been yelled at for two years about it but i was the last straw. we bumped elbows during the race and after i thought he was going to swing. i'm glad he didn't but it would have been fun if he did. long story short, if you're lapped, stay the hell out of the way. you can tag on the back as long as you want but your race is over so STAY OUT OF THE MIX IF YOU'RE LAPPED

Having said that - there is still no need for shoving, maybe a bit of a verbal shot across the bows but at the end of the day you've just got to encourage the rest of the chasing group to ignore the problem riders and roll turns as if they weren there, whether they're 2nd wheel or 7th.

I'm also quite new but I have gradually learnt and picked up on things over the past few years. The cam rider had some teammates in the breakaway group ahead and understandably didn't want to help chase them down. There are unwritten rules/etiquette about taking a turn at the front (notice the elbow flick of the front rider to indicate the next turn) to pull the rest of the peloton along, which is particularly difficult if you need to chase a breakaway group due to the organisation required, and relatively hard and quick turns. So it can get quite frustrating when there are riders who refuse to take a turn at the front and, in a way, take advantage of the draft without putting in their fair share of work. Edit: obviously, it was wrong for the aggressive rider to deliberately come into contact with the cam rider (once is already one too many, so doing it multiple times is beyond ridiculous, and a ban is well-deserved). The reckless cycling and deliberate contact is extremely silly and puts everyone at risk.

This "Harry" guy...I think he's got a crush on you. Kept looking back at you haha When he gives you the bird just for saying "Look ahead" how pathetic~ I just saw the part where he elbowed you. WTF? I'll keep it civil but that guy should be kicked out of joining the crit races after that. No excuse for doing that. If he has beef with you he can wait till the race is over. Did you guys talk after the race?

Quite a few ill-informed and ignorant comments on here, Typical of the Melbourne racing scene. Or lack of a real race scene and understanding of how racing actually works, And what is and isn't accepted in club racing. Firstly well done Steve for having 3 others willing to work together, Not easy to have 4 guys stick to a plan and execute it. While still in some clubs and grades it is still frowned upon teams or even "mates" racing together is now very a much a thing in Melbourne racing, More often than not poorly executed though. Most are accepting of it but 4 guys in a field of around 20 could be seen as a bit excessive in other countries like Belgium, France, Netherlands or other countries where "club" racing is far bigger and better understood than it is in Australia, when guys are blocking or dropping the wheel continuously to aid their team mates up the road "elbows out" is quite accepted to get them out the way and try get a chase working together. Especially in the higher grades where bike handling is no issue, Ok perhaps Harry with his hip and shoulder in part wtf 3 that clearly moves you off your line takes it too far but the little elbow to the hip would and should be no issue for A-grade cyclist knowing what they are doing.

what part of the world do you live in where initiating aggressive contact is "quite accepted?" Yes, nudge/brush/touch shoulders is all part of the race. What Harry did however, was clearly, intentionally malicious, and should not belong in any amateur or professional races.

Mate just make some friends and get your own team going or bridge solo or work with others. Dudes letting people pull turns he just isn’t pulling himself. No wonder why the Melbourne scene is worse than the Adelaide scene and you can’t even get numbers at sandown on a Tuesday

@@tzheng9453 Only the last contact he made is suspension or DQ worthy, Other than that while some may see it as excessive it's fair game. His hands don't leave the handlebars he is in control of his bike and keeps his eyes ahead. You've clearly never been in a position where guys are blocking in a chase group, Tempers are up frustrations aplenty things like this happen from time to time. Luckily nobody crashed and we move on, Guys cut guys or bump out riders in the final corner of crits every week and nobody cares it's not that different here, Just a young kid making a mistake. We move on.

@@jarrodfife242 Settle down Jarrod, I'm speaking from experience having raced overseas, I'm currently on a team so no issues there I just see it from both sides. Adelaide have like two crit courses champ, And all Adelaide riders go no good in the wind.... In Melbourne they have 15

@@garrywallah4966 you can’t force someone to work by bumping them. That’s not very friendly at all. Yeah sure yell at someone if you’re really annoyed but bumping or if you were to grab handlebars that’s in my opinion off limit.
